    ACUMEN ; (ˈækjʊˌmɛn,əˈkjuːmən)

WHAT DOES OUR NAME

MEAN?

The word is a Latin word from the 1530s which means "a point, sting," hence "sharpness, shrewdness," from acuere "to sharpen" .

ACUMEN is the ability to judge well; keen discernment; insight

ACUMEN means quickness, accuracy, and keenness of judgment or insight.

BUSINESS ACUMEN is keen-ness and quickness in under-standing and dealing with a business situation in a man-ner that is likely to lead to a good outcome.

[1] The term "business acumen" can be broken down literally as a composite of its two component words:

Business literacy is defined in SHRM's Business Literacy Glossary as "the knowledge and understanding of the fi-nancial, accounting, market-ing and operational functions of an organization”

[2] The Oxford English Dic-tionary defines acumen as "the ability to make good judgments and quick deci-sions".

[3] Given these textbook definitions, a strictly literal definition would be "keenness

and quickness in under-standing and dealing with a business situation”

Introduc on: What Should You Take Away?

Don’t forget that there are MANY aspects to a business—‐marke ng, opera ons,

administra ve, sales, finances, etc.

It’s easy as business owners to get bogged down in one area or another and

forget to breathe…step back…and look at the WHOLE business as opposed to

one aspect.

Some business owners can handle being a business owner and taking care of

“the forest” without ge ng focused on just “the trees”—others are so focused

at being good at whatever service or product they offer that its best they find

someone who can run their business for them. Otherwise, no ma er how  GREAT

your product or service is…it surely won’t last because it takes several  factors to

run a business, not just a good product or service.

My Story [based on my Firm or other business owners' stories]

In law school, there is a saying “Don’t miss the forest because of the trees.”

The reason law professionals said this was because

scared, new law students would concentrate so

much on learning this par cularly detailed or

obscure law that they missed how that law

fi ed in the en re context of a legal topic

or the legal field in general.

This makes bad a orneys…and even worse

business owners.

Attorney Dar’shun

Kendrick,

Take a look at your  OVERALL business.

For example, you’d be amazed what business owners discover during our Business Legal POWER Sessions:

Here is some examples of what I have heard from Georgia business owners:

1. “My accountant set up my business structure for me. They never told me THAT was a consequence of this particular business structure.”

(Solution: We converted a General Partnership to a Multi Member LLC)

2. “I never knew that I needed a buy-sell agreement. That would have been useful now that I am getting a divorce and my husband owns a portion of my business.”

(Solution: We referred her to CPA to value the business and other financing options)

3. “I am looking for a way to manage customers, vendors, employees, etc.”

(Solution: We taught them about cloud based CRM systems they could implement.)

4. “I really REALLY need to get on social media.”

(Solution: We gave general advice about social media and referred them to our social media partner.)

5. “Long Term goals? I’m trying to get past next week’s payroll.”

(Solution: We took time to ask them questions about their 5 years plus plan for their business to see what actions to take NOW to work towards those goals.)

A few lessons to be learned: Call to action!

1. Take 1/2 a day to do strategic planning for your business:

Reflect on the past week’s events and plan for the upcoming week.

2. Give KLP a call at (678) 739-8109 or visit us HERE to

sign up for your FREE 15 minute phone consultation or 1-2 hour Business Legal POWER Session.

3. Hire Help! If you find that your attention is lacking

in an area, hire help. We offer free referrals to our business partners so give us a call.

The Atlanta Business Academy for Women

“The Secrets to Finding a Full Staff of Cheap & Free Labor”

Presented By: Belinda Mays

Setting up an Internship Program

A lot of business owners are just looking for some free labor to answer calls, run errands, or make copies. Think about it. How would those tasks benefit a marketing student? They wouldn’t. You should always approach the situation with a win-win in mind.

1. Identify what projects you need completed and then seek to find the most qualified candidate to help you complete it. Treat your internship candidates just like you would a potential full-time paid employee.

2. Have a virtual internship model. You can choose to set up your program however you wish, virtual or in house; there is no right or wrong way to do this. It’s all about your business and depends solely upon your needs and preferences.

Where do I find interns? College websites – Most large college campuses have a

career page on their site where you can post your ad. You might also try calling their Career Services office for more information.

Online sites like Internmatch.com, Internships.com, and

rsinternships.com

Local High Schools and Community Colleges – Seek out

specific areas or interest

What do I put in my ad? Be very specific and describe the position in detail. Be sure to mention how long the position will be (project based or for a period of time), the degree they should be pursuing or necessary skills required, whether the internship is paid or unpaid, virtual or in house, etc. Be sure to outline the “takeaways” as well as mention why interning for you will be a great opportunity and they will have afterwards.

What do I ask in the interview? This is by far one of the most important steps in the process. If you follow the guidelines I’m about to share, you will al-most always find a quality intern.

Step 1: Give a brief overview of you and your company’s services. Before explaining the position in depth, ask them

about their career goals. If they are out of college, find out what they hope to gain from your internship program. Their answer will immediately tell you if they are a good fit for what you need. If not, then you can end the conversation there. If so, move on to the next question.

Step 2: Next, ask them what type of assignments they feel will help them reach their goal. When you find someone who has a “live” goal and is passionate about accomplishing it, managing them will be easy as pie.

After telling you the assignments they need, do a mental cross match to see if those are the same tasks that you need to get done. If not, bummer. If so, move on the step 3.

Step 3: This is where you will begin to outline the position’s duties. Tie in the goals of the position with the career goals that they previously stated.

Ask how many hours they can dedicate to the program/project each week. Once again, you want to give them the power so that they will work efficiently and stick around long enough to fully complete the assignment.

Instead of dictating the number of hours you need them to work, allow them to tell you how many hours they want to work.

Remember, you are trying to create a win-win relationship and most interns will work for FREE if it creates a win for them.

Step 4: If everything sounds good, ask if they would like to be considered for the position. If so, then email them your internship program contract and BOOM, you now have “help.”

Your contract should contain:

Contact info of all parties Term

dates Compensation – if any

 Duties Reports to instructions

Location & Schedule – virtual or

in house and number of expected work hours Required

Equip to Complete Job

NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement) In Writing. –

As an adult I got involved in church and I

between the world and Christ. I chose

Jesus Christ and I have not looked back

A: Share with us a li le bit about

KA: I am 32 years old. I love to worship.

My late Grandmother, Pastor Derotha

Palmer  was a strong inspira on for my

heart for  restoring women and raising

My primary purpose is always demon‐

God is undeniable.

My ministry  and my voice are "like a

tree given to me by God, bearing fruit

and is firmly rooted". I am Young, radical,

and radiant for Christ, God has blessed

me with an anointed voice and  a minis‐

I always put  God first, and I  refuse to

compromise the direc on God has set in

my life.  The words I sing are inspiring,

become more effec ve Chris ans.

We emphasize Holy living and the

fulfilling of God’s purpose in all of our

lives.

 Every year we organize  powerful

women empowerment conferences.

Our  goal is for all women to be

empowered, inspired, restored, and

receive healing and deliverance.

A: Tell us a bit about your latest album.

KA: My sophomore project SOUL MUSIC

was inspired from my love for God and

my prayer life.

The Lord led me to write another album

and instructed me to sing HIS word. His

word will minister to the souls of his

people.

I pray that all who listen will draw close

to the Lord and all those who do not

know the Lord will  accept HIM as their

Lord and Savior.

HOT “faster sales” TIPS!

Would you like to speed up your sales so that it takes less

me and effort to get new clients? If you answered with a

Yes, this ar cle is for you!

Before you get started, certain key elements must be in place:

(a) You must be offering a product or service that enough

people want and are willing to buy and

(b) You need a clear and compelling message about your

offering, so that people immediately understand how you

could help them, or someone they know.

Without these two basics, there is nothing in the world that

could speed up your sales, so be sure to se le these first!

Now that you are ready with your in‐demand product and

compelling message, here are 3  ps to help speed up your

sales:

Hot Tip No:1 Make wise use of objections! When people raise ques ons and concerns about your

offerings it shows that they are thinking about your product

or service and gauging the returns on a possible investment.

When they say nothing, they most likely do not think it

worth the trouble. So, be glad for objec ons!

In fact, an cipate and create a wri en list of them. Then

create responses to every possible objec on about your

product or service. Get your friends, colleagues and members

of your target audience to share their thoughts on your

product. Add their objec ons to your list and create responses

to these too.

Next, weave all of these objec ons and responses into your

marke ng copy and various communica ons.

                                                   Become skilled at answering your

                                     prospects’ ques ons before they

even ask. Then you will encoun

ter less resistance as you ask for

           the sale as your prospects’

                                                       ques ons will all be

                                                       answered before they

                                                       are even asked!

Where to use objec ons: In sales copy, presenta ons, product

descrip ons, emails, FAQs, email signatures, author bios,

social media profiles, status updates, videos, interview

ques ons, topics for ar cles, discussions and shows, and at

every available opportunity!

Hot Tip No:2 Come fully prepared! When you have any kind of selling

conversa on, have all the informa on

and support in place to receive the

sale. Provide all the informa on your

prospect needs to make an informed

decision.

You want to avoid saying things like, “Thank you for your

decision to buy XYZ. In a few days you will receive our invoice

and terms and condi ons.” You need to have these items to

hand, right there! Bring them physically to a mee ng or have

them online and ready to send. The point is to be ready as

soon as the prospect is ready and not leave the door open to

smart compe tors, to procras na on or to the prospect’s

fears and limi ng beliefs.

Things to have ready: Product descrip ons, benefits and fea‐

tures, tes monials and recommenda ons, price lists and pro‐

mo ons, payment op ons and plans, invoices and receipts,

terms and condi ons, FAQs, delivery op ons, contact details,

bank details, names of contacts, currency converters,  me

zone converters and everything you need to sign up your new

clients! Create a checklist and run through this before every

selling conversa on you hold.

Hot Tip No:3 Have a plan in place: Do not just wing it! Create both the front and back ends of

your sales process. Your front end is your ini al sales pitch or

presenta on. This could be in‐person, virtual or through your

promo onal materials. Your back end is your follow‐up

sequence, lis ng every step you will take your prospects

through from first enquiry to sale.

Be sure to create your front and back ends for every product

and promo on.

Most importantly, once you have the

process in place, with your front and back

ends, you can relax and run your sales

What to include in your plan or process:

“No” and “Not now” responses. And once you have the hang

       WHAT DOES ACUMEN MEAN?

ACUMEN ; (ˈækjʊˌmɛn, əˈkjuːmən)

The word is a Latin word from the 1530s which means "a point, sting," hence "sharpness, shrewd-ness," from acuere "to sharpen" .

ACUMEN is the ability to judge well; keen dis-cernment; insight

ACUMEN means quick-ness, accuracy, and keenness of judgment or insight.

BUSINESS ACUMEN is keenness and quickness in understanding and dealing with a business situation in a manner that is likely to lead to a good outcome.

[1] The term "business acumen" can be broken down literally as a composite of its two component words: Business literacy is defined in SHRM's Business Literacy Glos-sary as "the knowledge and understanding of the financial, account-ing, marketing and operational functions of an organization”

[2] The Oxford English Dictionary defines acumen as "the ability to make good judg-ments and quick deci-sions".

[3] Given these textbook definitions, a strictly literal definition would be "keenness and quick-ness in understanding and dealing with a business situation”
