Beware of the Ides of March. (Shakespeare)

Beware of the Ides of March sounds so ominous,

doesn't it? In actuality, every month has an Ides (often the

15th). The 15th of March became so notorious because of

the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC. The death of

Caesar made the Ides of March a turning point in Roman

history, as one of the events that marked the transition from

the historical period known as the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire.

This month is also known for March Madness! This refers

to the breeding season of the European hare. Generally nocturnal

and shy in nature, these hares change their behavior in the spring,

when they can be seen in broad daylight chasing one another

around fields and meadows. During this spring frenzy, they can be

seen striking one another with their paws (boxing). For a long

time, this had been thought to be competition between males, but closer ob-

servation has revealed it is usually a female hitting a male, either to show she

is not yet ready to mate or as a test of his determination. Sounds vaguely fa-

miliar. And in the United States it refers to events surrounding the single-

elimination Division I college basketball tournament.

Additionally, March contains one of my favorite holidays... St. Patrick's

Day. There is a bit of "blarney" in all of us whether we are Irish or not. The

Executive Committee and myself (mostly me; they just went along) thought

we should celebrate this event in someway. So in place of our regular Tues-

day luncheon, we will be hosting a dinner dance on Saturday, March 15th.

So, dig out those Kiss Me I'm Irish buttons and join us for some Irish Stew,

Corned Beef & Cabbage and fun! All of the details are contained on page

two.

For the last couple of months, the Nominating Committee has been hard at

work to put together a slate of Officers to be voted on for next fiscal year's

Executive Committee. This year the committee members are Nancy

Ramsdell (Chair), Sophia Palmer, Edwina Rosenbusch, Lynda Fletcher, Marian

I am on a mission to find and supply Huntsman's Cancer Center with as many knitted or crochet hats that

we can make. For any of you that can make hats, please join me and my family in making these for the unfor-

tunate people that are without their hair after infusions, especially this time of the year. We need hats for

men, women and children.

Please contact me if you can help.

President, Alan Fletcher

Alan Fletcher has been selected by your Nominating Committee to stand for election as President

of the Newcomers’ Club of Salt Lake City, Inc. for the 2014–15 year. Alan is a recovering lawyer

after having been engaged in the private, corporate and governmental practices of law for forty-two

years in the States of Utah, Washington and Colorado. Most of his practice related to public lands

and the extractive industries. Alan and his wife, Lynda, (also a Past President) returned to Salt Lake

City in 1999; they are the proud parents of two sons and a daughter and six grandchildren whose

families reside in Rock Springs, WY, Sammamish, WA and Salt Lake City.

Alan notes that, if he is elected President for the coming term, he will be the third President in four years to

have served twice. He believes that is moving in the wrong direction. As is obvious from its name, Newcom-

ers’ always needs new blood in the form of new memberships in order to bring together new and old mem-

bers of our community. It is just as important that we bring new blood into our leadership. Not only does

this Club not run itself, it needs new members from its ranks to bring new ideas and concepts to fruition.

First Vice President, Pat England

I have been a member of Newcomer's for about eight years. In that time my husband, Kem and I have met

many wonderful people and had some memorable experiences. I have served on the Executive Board as First

V.P, and twice as a special events coordinator.

Kem and I are both from faraway Tooele but made the trek (separately) to Salt Lake over twenty years ago.

We both enjoy our Newcomer's friendships and events.

I am looking forward to serving on the board again and hope to make it a great year!

Treasurer, Rebecca (Becky) Bock

My family moved to Utah in July of 2011 and I joined Newcomers Club in September, 2013. My

only regret is I didn’t join sooner! I’m originally from Southern California where I grew up in

Monrovia and remained for 40 years until we began relocating for my husband’s job at Farmers

Insurance. I have a daughter, 21 and a son, 18. After living in both Nebraska and Minnesota for

two years each, we were ready to head back west where we are most comfortable. In Nebraska,

I was involved in the New Neighbors League and served as Secretary of the board for one year.

In Minnesota, I was involved in the St. Paul Area New Residents Club and was nominated to serve as

Webmaster but had to withdraw upon learning we were relocating to Utah. I have been a stay-at-home

mom for 20 years, prior to that working as an Executive Assistant in hospital administration and insurance.

Secretary, Pete Harmon

I moved here from New York in 2010. I was heavily involved in the Boy Scouts in NY and found it

to be totally different here and not what I was used to. Carol and I joined Newcomers about a year

later for the activities and I later got involved with advertising. We both participate in Smiling

Grapes, hiking/ snowshoeing and Gourmet.

Nominees for 2014-2015 Newcomers’ Officers

Second Vice President, Melanie Zinninger

We came to Salt Lake City last year from Atlanta. This is our first experience with the west and

it's outdoor culture, grand vistas and laid back life style, which we are enjoying tremendously.

The Newcomers' Club has been a great vehicle to fast track us toward meeting new people,

enjoying some fun activities and hopefully making long lasting friendships.

I've enjoyed the Mah-Jongg group, the Coffee Wanders and Pinochle group and I look forward to

participating in more activities this year.

It was kind of you to ask me to help out as an officer and I will do my best to keep up the same quality of

service you have had from previous officers. I only hope this job comes with some extra brain cells, so I can

remember everyone's name.

Edison Stanford Hearing Center Invites you to test drive remarkable new digital hearing instruments. This offer is free of charge and you are under no obli-gation. These revolutionary digital instruments use the latest technology to comfortably and almost invisibly help you hear more clearly. This new technology solves the “stopped up ears” and “head in a barrel” sensation some people experience.

Special testing will be done to deter-mine the increased benefits of this technology. Benefits of hearing aids vary by type and degree of hearing loss, noise, environment, accuracy of hearing test, and proper fit. This is a wonderful opportunity to determine if hearing help is available for your hearing loss while you evaluate your performance with this technology.

If you wish to participate you will be required to have your hearing tested in our office free of charge to determine candida-cy. Qualified individuals will then be placed on a two week test drive period. At the end of this period, you may pur-chase the instruments, if you desire, at a reduced charge. Otherwise, there is no charge whatsoever for participating in this promotion.

dates are available until January 31.
