what living on the prairie does is slow you down to look at things a little more closely.

You’ll never get tired of studying the sky here on the Great Plains. You’ll realize there are more stars in it than you’ve ever seen before. You’ll find that time seems to stand still while you watch the sun falling into wheatfields or behind the folded hills of the Fort Pierre National Grassland.

You’ll come to value the beauty of a single tree when you see it far off across the Great Plains. You’ll appreciate the stateliness of the architecture of the south dakota state capitol, in part because it’s so astonishing to find it here in the middle of a rural state.

You’ll find yourself ensnared by the missouri river. whether you’re hiking along its broken country, or studying the shoreline from behind your rod and reel, or moving across the uplands for grouse or pheasant, you’ll realize this is part of you now; you’ll never forget it. You’ll learn to know it in all seasons and weather.

You’ll come to value neighbors, too. You’ll

understand why stranded travelers have written to us at the capital Journal – not once, but twice in the past year – to tell us how remarkable the people are in Pierre and Fort Pierre; how “western hospitality” must have been coined with this community in mind.

You’ve come to a great place to raise your children, with good schools, churches that reach out to everyone, a rich Native American culture, deep roots in history, and a variety of sports, activities, clubs. if you’ve never seen rodeo or an indian powwow, you’ll see it now. if you’ve never fished for walleye or salmon, or eaten the world’s best steaks, now’s your chance.

our Newcomers’ Guide gives you a place to start in making yourself at home.

Your neighbors can help you do the rest. They’re the best in the world, and they’ll help you with what you need. You’re welcome here.

south dakota became a state on Nov. 2, 1889, when it was signed into the union. one month prior to that, voters picked Pierre to be a temporary state capital.

As a new state, a permanent seat of government selection was placed on the November ballot of the same year. The biggest competition to Pierre was huron, which is located about 115 miles to the east.

The two cities spent so much money to promote themselves as the better candidate to be the state capital they went into debt. it took Pierre at least 30 years to pay off that money.

At a later showdown of the cities vying to be the capital — this time with the town of mitchell — the milwaukee and North western railroads handed out more than 100,000 free passes. voters were again asked to determine which city should host the capitol. in a third election, Pierre was chosen to be the state capital.

The state capitol building was built between 1905 and 1910. it holds a wide array of architectural points of interest. From the rotunda paintings to a display showing what the first Ladies wore to their inaugural ball, the capitol is one of the first stops newcomers to the Pierre area should see.

The capitol celebrated its centennial anniversary in 2010.

And if all fishing terms are foreign to you, any bait shop or sporting goods store in the area will get you going in the right direction, including purchasing a valid south dakota fishing license.

The most popular time to hunt in south dakota is in the fall, but late-season hunting can also be very successful and enjoyable.Pheasant hunting and other upland game, waterfowl hunting, small game and deer hunting seasons all open in the fall. during the winter months, late-season deer and predator hunting are active. in the spring, hunters can participate in turkey and light goose seasons. in the off-season, prairie dog hunting and other varmint hunting are permitted on private land (with permission).

when planning your hunt, refer to the current Game, Fish and Parks hunting handbook, available online at http://gfp.sd.gov/hunting/docs/huntinghandbook.pdf for rules, regulations and specific season dates.

For information about and links to accommodations, guides, packages, applying for licenses online and much more, visit www.travelsd.com/outdoors/hunting.

south dakota’s season of cold and snow creates the ideal setting for winter sports.

The trails at oahe downstream, La Framboise island and Farm island are popular places to snowshoe and cross-country ski.

The best sledding is found at hilger’s Gulch, located close to the capitol complex in Pierre.

on the smaller lakes and ponds in the area, ice skating is a popular winter pastime. ice skaters also enjoy open skating, hockey and figure skating at the two ice rinks in the Fort Pierre community expo center, open mid-october through mid-march; rental skates are available. For hours and fees, contact the expo center at 605-223-2178.

during the winter, the oahe expo Building — next to the stanley county Fairgrounds in Fort Pierre — is home to the oahe capitals ice hockey teams. The PAYsA rink, recently opened, is behind wal-mart in Pierre. visit www.oahehockey.org.

Though the Pierre Area Youth skating Association ice rink was built primarily for figure skaters, it is open to the public for skating and other ice activities. For hours, call Jana miner at 605-220-4104.

As the New Year begins, so does south dakota’s remarkable ice fishing season. walleye and northern pike are the biggest of the winter catches, but it’s the smaller yellow perch, topping out at about two pounds, that draws the most attention.

ice fishing isn’t the only option: Fish from the fishing pier at the causeway north of LaFramboise island, a well-known spot for wintertime walleye, trout and northern pike fishing. General information about fishing in south dakota, including licensing and fishing tips, is online at www.sdgfp.info.
