Historic New Castle

BRIEF HISTORY OF NEW CASTLEHistoric New Castle is distinguished as a charming example of early American

civilization. Its cobblestone streets, historic buildings, central Green, and commanding view of the Delaware River create a compact scene unique in the United States. Founded in 1651 by the Dutch, and later ruled by Sweden and Great Britain, New Castle became the seat of the regional government. Starting as the colonial capital in 1704, New Castle became the first state capital of Delaware in 1776.

Much of New Castle survives as the colonial and federal generations knew it. The distinction of New Castle today is due to the busy life that has gone on here without break for centuries and its blending of the significantly historic and new.
