EXAMPLE POSTER
[picture]
• Revelation = God communicating Himself to man so that man can share the life of God
• Why do we need revelation?
THE GOD WHO SPEAKS
• God speaks to us in love• Through nature, Salvation history, Christ, the Church,
Scripture
• Christianity is not a religion of the book• Christianity is a religion of the Word (God
communicating with us)
• All of creation speaks of God.
• Jesus = Word of God come in the flesh = fulfillment of Revelation
• God reveals himself in words and deeds.
• In Jesus, God has said everything!
JESUS
= when Jesus, Mary, or other Saints appear to someone.
• Lourdes, Fatima, Divine Mercy
• All these point back to Scripture and Tradition.
• Nothing new!
• Just helping us live out the Gospel
PRIVATE REVELATIONS
OBJECTIVES
• Fall in love with Scripture.• Learn how to pray with Scripture.• See how Scripture and Tradition belong together.• See how the Bible came together.
• “In the sacred books, the Father who is in heaven comes lovingly to meet his children, and talks with them.” (Vatican II)• God speaks with us, in a special way, through
Scripture and teaches us how to speak with him• Mary as our model
Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of
Christ!
ACTIVITY
• Do lectio divina with a passage of your choice.• Fill out lectio divina worksheet as you go through
each step.
• Suggested passages:1. The Annunciation (Lk 1:26-38)2. Healing the blind (Mt 9:27-31)3. Crowning with thorns (Mk 15:16-20)
HOW SCRIPTURE CAME TO BE
• The Word of God is handed on to us through Tradition.• Scripture was a fruit of Tradition
1. Jesus life and preaching2. Oral tradition: Apostles preached the Gospel3. Apostles and helpers wrote down what they
preached.4. Bishops met to discern which books were
inspired.5. The canon (official table of contents of the
Bible) was formed.
INSPIRATION
• “God breathed”• God is the author of Scripture along with the
human author• They worked together
INERRANCY
• Scripture is free of ANY errors.
• Whatever the human author asserted as true, the Holy Spirit also asserts to be true.
• Different genres and literary devices. • E.g. A comic strip asserts truth differently than a news
report.
INTERPRETATION
• Have to see what the author was asserting• Know the genre, history, language, etc.
• Read Scripture as a united whole• Read Scripture together with Tradition
