TORRES VEDRAS

Torres Vedras has about 80.000 inhabitants. It is the largest municipality in the district of Lisbon, and has approximately 20km of coastline of rare beauty with extensive beaches.

There are several archaeological sites to visit, namely, Roman settlements, Arab castles, medieval churches and monasteries, fortresses from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries... The region is also known for its excellent wine and delicious food. One of the our main delicacies are the traditional pastéis/cakes de feijão/bean.

The coastline of the municipality of Torres Vedras is deeply invested in tourism and environmental quality, an activity that has been rewarded with several awards. Santa Cruz, with its beautiful waves, sea, wind and exquisite weather is the perfect place to relax.

You can also use the bike path that connects Santa Cruz to Porto Novo or the Ecopista Sizandro.

Castro do ZambujalCastro Zambujal is one of the most complex fortified prehistoric villages in the Iberian Peninsula. It is located about 3 kilometres southwest to the city of Torres Vedras and was discovered by Leonel Trinity in 1938.

Edifício/Building Paços do Concelho/Town Hall (next to Transforma)The date of construction of the original building of the Paços do Concelho is unknown. The earliest reference to its construction is 1337. The building was renovated in 1597 and 1634. The current layout of the building results from a renovation work completed in 1776. The building has been used for the administrative services of the county, and was also home to the war commissariat and prison. It is currently the Paços - Galeria Municipal/Municipal Gallery, showcasing visual arts exhibitions and documental, ethnographic, scientific and pedagogical presentations.

Centro/Centre Histórico/HistoricLocated in the old town, the Centro Histórico de Torres Vedras dates back to the earlier period of Portugal’s foundation as a country. The centro histórico comprises neighbourhoods around the old medieval village, which does not exist more. At the highest point one can find the Castle, where even now it is possible to see Roman mortars in some of the tanks. Inside the castle it is possible to admire the oldest main church of Torres Vedras, the Church of Santa Maria.

Castelo/CastleCastelo is an archaic building, a fact a confirmed by the existence of two Roman cisterns, and evidence that the first walls were built by the Arabs. Despite its state of disrepair, Castelo continued to function as a regular lodging space for troops until the end of the nineteenth century. It has been renovated several times.

Aqueduto/aqueduct de Torres VedrasLocated in the urban area of Torres Vedras, this utilitarian work of Gothic architecture extends for over two kilometres and was built to supply the Chafariz dos Canos, located in the centro histórico da cidade.

Azenha de Santa CruzBuilt in the late fifteenth century, Azenha of Santa Cruz is now an Interpretation Centre dedicated to the historical study of cereal grinding and bread production. As a cultural space that promotes tradition and the transmission of memory and popular culture, this centre presents regularly, in addition to its thematic display, exhibitions, film screenings and photographic exhibitions. Horário:Inverno/winter: terça a domingo, das 10h00 às 13h00 e das 14h00 às 18h00Verão/summer (julho/July a agosto): segunda/Monday a domingo, das 10h00 às 22h00

Chafariz dos Canos/Fountain of pipesThe existence of this fountain, located in the urban area of Torres Vedras, is mentioned in the fourteenth century. It was powered by the aqueduto and is located near one of the gates of the medieval town (Porta da Corredoura). It was used to supply water to visitors, inhabitants and animals.

Linhas/lines de Torres VedrasLinhas de Torres were built by the Duke of Wellington to defend Portugal from the third Napoleonic invasion (1810). Located between the Tagus River and the Atlantic Ocean, this strategically entrenched field, taking advantage of the rugged characteristics of the terrain, allowed a land based defence system of the Lisbon peninsula. The lines comprise 152 military structures, including redoubts and artillery batteries, 37 of them in Torres Vedras, equipped with 523 mouths-of-fire.Guide of the Historic Route of Lines of Torres (English):http://en.calameo.com/read/000552822419ad9774b94An animated film (Portuguese only):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAMJSzrBqCI

Igreja/Church de Santa Maria do CasteloLocated inside the Castelo of Torres Vedras, Igreja of Santa Maria is one of the oldest of the four main churches of the city. The construction dates back to the second half of the twelfth century, shortly after the capture of the Castelo from the Moors in 1148.

Igreja de São Pedro/Saint PeterIgreja de São Pedro, along with the Santa Maria do Castelo church, is the oldest of the four main churches of the city and the second in terms of religious primacy. It is known that it already existed during the reign of D. Afonso Henriques (first king of Portugal - twelfth century), but it was completely rebuilt in the early sixteenth century, going through a new renovation process after the earthquake of 1755. The igreja has been classified as a National Monument since 1910.

Ermida/chapel de Nossa/our Senhora/lady do SocorroCapela de Nossa Senhora do Socorro was erected in the early 16th century at the top of Serra do Socorro. This site hosts an important pilgrimage on August 5th and is also one of the most significant natural wonders in the western region.
