r ight th rough to the ear ly 1 800 ’s the

theat re cu l tu re was a t the hear t and

sou l o f the c i ty. A fte r th i s came a

per iod o f po l i t i ca l unres t , l ead ing to

a dec l i ne i n t i cket sa les wh ich fo rced

many theat res to c lose.

I n December 1894 , th i ngs s ta r ted to

look up when The Emp i re Theat re o f

Var ie t ies opened i t s doors i n the o ld

V ic to r ia Square. The open ing year

was so success fu l tha t the theat re

had to expand the i r g rand ha l l to

keep up w i th t i cket demands . Over

the nex t seventy years The Emp i re

saw s tars such as Char l i e Chap l i n ,

Har ry Lauder, Kenn Dodd , Ger t ie

G i tama and Be l fas t ’s own Wi l l i e

Ashcroft .

Surv iv ing on t rad i t ion a lone, the

Empi re Theatre s tayed open unt i l the

1960 ’s - jus t a few years after the

te lev i s ion was invented and found i t s

way into most peop le’s l i v ing rooms.

The pass ion o f the per formers and

the owners was so s t rong , they

managed to keep i t open longer than

any other theat re o f a s im i la r age.
