We are happy to be back with our February/March issue. This is the time of year when the cold, rainy evenings make you want to stay in-doors, curled up with a good book and dream-ing of balmy, sunny days. And what better way to brighten up the gloomy weather than to read through our magazine for your wedding inspi-rations?

From our readers’ feedback we know that wed-ding planning often starts during the winter months, and in this issue, as always, we know you are going to find ideas and themes which appeal to you and help you to make all those important decisions.

What we love about this issue is that we have several couples who came from abroad to get married here, proving once again that Malta is one of the top wedding destinations. Even when the bride (or groom) is Maltese and has re-located abroad, many of them want to come back to their native country to tie the knot. Who

can blame them? With our weather, our stun-ning locations and every single type of venue you can think of, a Maltese wedding will always be a memorable one. U“I have been in hairdressing for 15 years, following in my mother’s foot-steps who has been in the business for over 30 years. Although I studied art

and history of art at school, hairdress-ing came naturally to me and that’s where I really shined.

After obtaining my City and Guilds in Hairdressing in 2004, I went to The Vidal Sassoon Academy in Lon-don where I received exten-sive professional training in colouring and cutting tech-niques.

I still travel often for courses and fairs with the highlight being The International Wella Trend Vision Award where I represented Malta. I often style the hair for magazine photo shoots and produce the D Salon hair show during The Malta Fashion Awards.

Eventually, we realized that my moth-er’s salon was getting too small so we created ‘ D Salon ‘ in Ibrag. With fresh ideas from London, we created a whole new salon concept.  D Salon has an ultramodern lounge club feel combined with cool hairstyling. We serve freshly made cappuc-cinos and macchiatos, and stay tuned to fashion TV and chill out house music, while we work.

Our team has travelled to seminars to learn about wed-ding hairstyles and has been trained by the world famous Patrick Cameron. Our style in wedding hair is natural, chic and not overdone, making the bride look the most beautiful version of herself! We take our inspiration from fashion catwalk trends from the coming sea-sons.

On the big day our team provides hair at home or hotel service. We also treat the bride and her girls to hair shine

treatments with our compliments, where the girls can have drinks and enjoy some quality time together the evening before the wedding. We also

provide beautiful quality hairpieces from London at great prices in or-der to help girls who have fine hair achieve their special look.

Rich hues of purples and gold: this was the colour scheme which our stylist Elaine Zarb used against the classic backdrop of one of Malta’s oldest, most elegant hotels.

The five star Hotel Phoenicia was build during the 1930s and officially opened in 1947. The luxurious furnishings and grand interiors provided our photographer Ka-terina with considerable options to create the right atmosphere, featuring our striking, statuesque model, Diandra Mattei.

Inspired by the baroque atmos-phere of Valletta and the Vene-tian masquerade, Elaine trans-formed the Maryanski room into an opulent, rich, almost decadent setting. The lush touches of red comple-mented the set up for an intimate wedding ceremony with roman-tic, soft lighting provided by numerous candles and lanterns placed on tulle and lace runners. More candles nestled in crystals on plates and glass candle holders with crystal drops gave that luxu-rious touch.

A vintage mirror with a brushed gold frame and beau-tiful ornamental Venetian masks (provided by Pop in) were additional, creative touches.

In the dining room, the plush yellow velvet chairs fur-ther give the feeling of opulence which this hotel is so renowned for. Interesting window features, a wooden white divider and a purple sofa were all used to their best effect.

As a stylist, Elaine always helps the couple to come

up with the right decor by studying the features of a venue and working with it by using her endless supply of decorations and props, to create just the right look and feel for a unique set up.

Our mODEl

Many in the wedding industry know Diandra as a make-up art-ist, but she is also an excellent model herself. Diandra’s height and slender frame meant she could show the beautiful two dresses provided by Marquita of WeddingBells, to their best ad-vantage.

thE DrEss

This ivory mermaid-style dress is designed by Farage. The long cor-set with boning is laced up at the back and is made of lace with real Sworovski crystals. It is offset by a deep plunging neckline and the skirt has tulle details. The lining is a lavender colour and the very

long train completes the dramatic effect.

The beautiful headpiece was also provided by Wed-dingBells.

Diandra equally carried off with panache the lovely, princess-like ball gown with a corseted top in jac-quard fabric. There is a floral detail on the bust line, and the skirt is made of tulle with a wavy edge detail. This dress comes with a long, matching veil.

thE makE-uP

Keeping to the colour scheme, Daniela Cassar used two shades of purple for the outside of the eye, and blended the black eye pencil for definition and a more dramatic look. Gold eyeshadow and gold glitter were used for more glamour, and the look was finished off with black eyeliner. When focussing on the eyes like this, Daniela recommends leaving the lips bare and natural,The cheeks were contoured to emphasize Diandra’s love-ly cheekbone structure.

thE hair

With such a dramatic dress, Jo Briffa from Hairoscope suggested this “messy” up style, swept up in a casual (and yet very artful) loose chignon on the side which gives a romantic , soft look to frame Diandra’s delicate features. It is reminiscent of an old Victorian hairstyle with a modern twist.

For the second dress, he let her hair down, with just a few strands gathered on the side, showing off the crimp-ing effect.

thE flOWErs

Joseph from Flower Arts added his creativity with his beautiful, heavy pewter style candelabras with jewelled candle holders. He decorat-ed them with a mixture of orchids, baby roses, gold eucalyptus and gloriosa. Joseph also fashioned a bouquet on the same theme using a gorgeous burst of purples, dusky red, fuchsia, pinks, orange, old white, greens and golds.

thE CakE (p.20)

The Phoenicia ballroom was the grand setting to showcase the majes-tic six-tier cake made by Wedding Cakes By Phil.The dramatic set up on the stage with the use of candles, gold plates and gold chiffon tablecloths created a very rich feel.

The main feature was the sugar lace which was then airbrushed in gold and crown purple to match the themeThe other tiers were decorated with ribbon, while sugar baroque mo-tifs were place on the bottom tier.

eigh moved over to England from Ireland for a job in 2008 when she finished university. Just four months later she met Steve, who is English, and they immediately knew it was meant to be.

Steve timed his romantic proposal just in time for Christmas: “I had just got home from my last day of work before the holidays. Steve asked me to open a Christmas present early and handed me a big box which was disguising a smaller ring box inside; it was a huge surprise. He had also arranged an amaz-ing surprise night out in a Michelin star restaurant that evening.”

When she began shopping for her dress, Leigh knew she wanted something a little different and not a traditional style gown. “I love embellishment so I knew I wanted something with a little bit of sparkle. As soon as I spotted my Jenny Packham dress I knew it was the one for me. It is head to toe embellished with tiny pearls and beads and shim-mered beautifully in the light. I also loved the vin-tage style.”

Lara Steer from D Salon did Leigh’s lovely hair-style on the day, opting to leave her hair loose and natural-looking with just a hint of soft curls, and decorative hair clips on either side. This style perfectly matched the chic simplicity of the dress, as well as gave Leigh just the right look she was after.

Make-up was by the very talented Mateja Camilleri, who has won numerous awards for her professional make-up. Leigh’s peaches and cream complexion was enhanced with just a touch of blusher and nude lipstick, while more emphasis was placed on her dark eyes.

Leigh wanted quite a low key day so she chose to have a small bridal party with just her two sisters. “Since, there is quite an age gap between them we decided to have them in different dresses. I explained the colour palette I wanted and the older one, my maid of honour, chose her own dress. I found the dress for the young-er bridesmaid. Steve chose his two best friends as joint best men.”

What would make an Irish lass and her English fiancé opt for a destination wedding in Malta?

Leigh says the choice was easy: “Malta ticked all our boxes: beautiful weather, history and culture, an amazing choice of wedding venues, accessible for our family and friends to travel from both Ire-land and England. We also we wanted to actually get married on the day of our wedding which we were able to do in Malta due to there being no residency requirement; this was a really impor-tant factor for us.”

The bride planned most of the wedding herself, and the couple visited Malta twice during the planning process to visit venues and have vendor meetings. “The venue we chose, Palazzo Parisio has an amazing wedding coordinator Jayne Polidano, which helped a lot. We also had a lot of help from Elaine at Elegant Impressions who I hired to co-ordinate everything for the day and for the styl-ing of the venue. Elaine was such a huge help to us as she kept everything organised in the run up

to the big day. That meant I could relax on the day knowing that someone else was in charge. Elaine also did a wonderful job in styling our venue. The Palazzo is just so beautiful. We were blown away by it as soon as we walked in there. The surroundings, ambience and service were exactly what we’re were looking for.”

Leigh admits she is the kind of person who likes to do things a bit differently. “We knew we wanted an outdoor party so chose to have din-ner and dancing in the Palazzo gardens which was wonderful. Jayne Polidano’s husband has a band, and they provided the music. All the lit-tle touches were very important to me so I sent a large box of little bits of decor I had collected over to Elaine before the wedding. This was then incorporated into the day. Elaine also sup-plied some beautiful decor and we especially loved her gorgeous lanterns which illuminated the walkways and added to the beautiful atmos-phere.”

Enhancing the Palazzo were some amazing ar-rangements by Joseph from Flower Arts who used soft pastels as centrepieces, and garlands and flowers to decorate the white chairs for the ceremony. The same colour scheme was used in

the bridal bouquet.

The grand ballroom with its ornate decor was used to its full effect for the ceremony, while the gardens provided the best possible backdrop not only for the wedding dinner, but also for some amazing wedding photos. The Palazzo is always a hit with foreign couples precisely be-cause it offers so many options for the couple - either for a garden wedding, or the use of its lav-ish indoor rooms, or a mixture of both. There is also plenty of space for the bride to get her hair and make-up done in a private area, before put-ting on her dress to go meet her groom.

60 guests travelled from Ireland, England and even Australia to attend Steve and Leigh’s wed-ding. “Steve put together a fantastic wedding website to help our guests with planning their trip to Malta. And while he was very involved in choosing the venue and menu, he didn’t have too much interest in colour schemes or flow-ers,” says Leigh with a smile.

It was a moving, simple ceremony with lots of personal touches. This couple both wanted to have their Mums involved so they asked them to walk up the aisle in front of the bridal party.

“We wanted our first dance to be very special and personal so my brother played guitar and my cousin sang. We also had two of our friends read beautiful poems.”

There was just one nail biting moment when someone very important arrived late (and it was not the bride or groom): “The taxi that was due to pick up the registrar got lost so he ended up being half and hour late which was stressful for everyone so I was so happy when I finally got to walk down the aisle.”

But looking back, all the couple have are happy memories of their destination wedding on our island. “It was the most incredible day and we will never forget it. We are so happy we chose to get married in Malta and would like to thank all the wonderful people we met and worked with there who made our wedding day so magical.”

ngele was studying to become a chef, and was doing her apprenticeship in an England hotel when she met David, who was the banqueting supervisor. “As we lived in the same staff accommodation, our friendship soon blossomed and we became boyfriend and girlfriend. We lived in England for just under two years together before eventually deciding to take the big step to move Malta and starting our life out here.”

“We eventually bought an apartment to-gether which made the move more perma-nent, as David was adapting to the life here and we could see ourselves together in the long run. However, we never really men-tioned the subject of marriage, and it took time to for it to really become something we thought and spoke of.”

When the proposal did come, Angele de-

scribes it as a “well-thought out and suc-cessful one.” For her birthday, David booked a Christmas holiday to New york which she later found out was part of the overall proposal plan. “He always wanted to share this city with me and decided to take me there in that month as we both love the Christmas period and there is nowhere bet-ter to experience the delights of Christmas. On the 14th of December we went to visit the Empire State building, and he asked me to mention my favourite spot since we had been there. It was breathtaking seeing all the views of the New york City, so I said this location and at that point, although he suffers from vertigo and found it sickening, he got down on one knee and popped the question. It was incredibly romantic and very emotional, just like the movies.”

The first item on any prospective bride’s list is usually wedding gown shopping and An-

gele knew she wanted a simple yet classic dress in a vintage style which would be really “her”.“I tried around 5/6 dresses, different styles and mate-rial but when I tried my dress I just felt it was the one. My Mum was present on my first trial, but I didn’t buy it that instant so I went again with my mother-in-law who was here for a visit from England and my maid of honour. When I saw their teary eyes, I was convinced.”

Choosing her bridal party was the easiest decision she made in the whole wedding process. “My maid of honour is my cousin and best friend; we’ve practi-cally known each other since birth and we have just been constant in each other’s life ever since. As for my bridesmaids I have known each of them in dif-ferent stages of my life, each one of them represented something special as an individual to me and when I brought them all together, it still makes me smile that they hit it off in an instant.”

Angele consulted with them via Facebook through an open group chat every time she saw something in the shops or on the internet. “I would forward it to them and they would give their opinion on the matter. The aim for me was to have something which suited each one of them; something they felt comfortable and in the end would love to wear.”

Hairstyling was done by Funky Shades, a salon situ-ated in Angele’s home town of Zebbug. The bride was given a loose upstyle which suited her down-to-earth personality with soft curls pinned back in a casual chi-gnon. This created just the right look to go with her veil which was worn low at the back of the head. It is a stylish, elegant upstyle which is perfect for a bride who does not want to be over-styled. The bridesmaids had loose flowing curls held back from their faces with clips.

As for the ushers, four of them have been David’s best

friends since college for 9 years so he had no second thoughts in including them on their special day. “I cannot tell you how proud I was to have them by my side on such a day. I also had my future brother-in-law as an usher as we are also very close. Myself and the best man have also been very close friends since col-lege and choosing him was an easy decision to make,” David says.

It was a natural decision to hold the wedding in Malta, and over 40 people made the trip over from England to celebrate with them. The Mass was held at St. Philip’s Parish Church Zeb-bug followed by a reception at the Xara Lodge which was a partial formal sit down dinner for starters and main course.“We live in Attard and our view from the terrace is that of Mdina. When we first entered the Xara Lodge not only were we blown away by the beauty of the ven-ue but the view of Mdina from their top terrace was very similar to that of our own terrace. From then on we had our heart set on that venue.”

They opted for a cupcake wedding cake on a table sur-rounded by sweets and candies in different layers. As Angele used to work as a Pastry chef this part of the catering was obviously very important. “During the sit-down dinner, in fact, we positioned the cake table in the centre of the hall so that everyone could see it.” This wedding represented a mix of cultures so Angele and David tried to incorporate the best parts of Mal-tese and British weddings. “Not only did we have lots of friends and family from the UK but we also mixed in some traditions such as a seated sit down service for the starter and main preceded by canapés with wel-come drinks. We had speeches and the groom and his groomsmen were in full tails so it had the sophistica-tion of a British wedding while having the character-istics and charm and family feel of a Maltese wedding.

As we both love travelling, we had travel as our theme. We have been to quite a few countries since we both work in this industry.”

The couple turned to Johanna Zammit from Bali Stuff to decorate the venue. Johanna came up with the idea of having a map to illustrate the seating chart. Table settings had postcards of the couple in various places around the world while souvenirs were placed in a vin-tage hand luggage. The decor was all white with the flower arrangements providing wonderful pops of col-our throughout.

Elegant brass candle sticks, with candles matching the colour scheme gave the room a romantic glow.

Angele admits that she was very anxious could not get any sleep the night before. In the morning while doing her hair and makeup with the bridal party there was great excitement with everyone in good humour and providing their full support. “However, outside the church I was once again very nervous and excited at the same time.”

David went through similar emotions: “in the run up to the moment I passed through stages of excitement and nervousness throughout. In fact, while waiting on the altar I had a brief discussion with the best man about

what the outcome would be if the bride did not turn up. Luckily for myself and all those that were there, of course, Angele did turn up looking stunning and radiant, taking my breath away.”

Nerves are a common factor during weddings, but so are the inevitable funny moments which can break the ten-sion. “There we were walking down the aisle, a moment I had always dreamt about with both my parents by my side and at the last minute, when giving me away I noticed my veil had got stuck with my Mum’s bracelet! It took quite some time and in the end we had to pull really hard to get it off, resulting in David’s tears of emotion being gone by the time I got loose. The candle of Unity wouldn’t light during that blessing resulting in us standing on the altar foolishly for what felt an age, and in the end we just gave up. Those small glitches aside all went very smoothly and we couldn’t have wished for it all to run more smoothly.”

David and Angele say that the best part of this day was be-ing surrounding by their loved ones, celebrating together with both sets of families from different countries being united. “The speeches especially melted the hearts of all those present,” they said.

ian Navarro never imagined that when she accepted a new job in Venice in September 2009, that it would lead her to meeting the man she would eventually marry. “Gimmi had just moved to Rome and we met at a casual dinner with friends in common and hit it off straight away. We started seeing each other immediately and for the first two years we went back and forth between Rome and Venice until Gimmi decided to make the big step and move to Venice.”Gimmi explains that after living together for two years, he realized that they should spend the rest of their lives together, “but I waited until Sian’s birthday on the 20th July 2013 to propose.”

Sian was taken completely by surprise, never having ex-pected a proposal, and certainly not the kind of elabo-rate proposal which Gimmi had put together. “It was my birthday but also the feast of the Redeemer, the patron Saint of Venice, so the atmosphere was like a Maltese village festa but on boats. When we got home

Gimmi asked me to wait outside as he had ‘to assemble my birthday present’. Once I entered the apartment I found a trail of candles leading to the living room with a note to press play on the TV. Gimmi had written a song to the music of Elton John’s ‘your Song’ about our love story which he sang and at the end got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.”

Sian says that initially she did not want a traditional wedding dress and had found a beautiful beaded Rob-erto Cavalli evening gown by chance, which she fell in love with on sight. “Gimmi was with me that day and caught a glimpse of it which bothered me a little but I went ahead and bought it. Afterwards I got to think-ing that I could surprise him and get a more traditional dress for church and then change for the reception. At first I could not find anything I particularly liked with-out spending a fortune in Italy and did a lot of research online as I travel quite often to the US. I had a long business trip planned there for March and set up some appointments to try on some gowns and tried on sev-eral dresses in New york, Chicago and finally found it in Los Angeles.”In both cases the dresses just felt right, and she even managed to get the input of her friends in Malta with the help of What’s App while she was shopping!

in Wedding Day magazine. The bridal bouquet was a beautiful display of roses and peonies, and at the church there was a delicate arrangement on the al-tar made of gypsophila and roses. At the venue he continued the same theme on the bistro table.

When it came to choosing her bridal party, Sian had no dilemmas. “The choice was natural: my sister and one of my closest friends were obvious choic-es for the bridesmaids with my other dear friend acting as witness. I selected the colour scheme for the wedding which they both approved of and we went from there. As I live abroad once again a lot of What’s App was involved! I got their dresses in New york by taking photos of myself in a selection of dresses and they were told be by their phones at a certain time to see the pictures in real time. We then chose together and in the end they fit more or less perfectly!”

In Italy, couples do not normally have any ushers or a best man but just two witnesses. As witness they chose the person who introduced them and who was one of Gimmi’s oldest friends. As they only had one witness Gimmi then asked Nicola, his dearest friend who is like a brother to him, to take on the role. He didn’t carry out many of the traditional best man duties but was a great support throughout the preparations.

The colour was incorporated with touches throughout, from the bridesmaid dresses, ties for the men and the cake. Extra touches included the Tiffany blue fans placed on the pews at the church to help alleviate the heat, the personal-ized cocktail napkins with the couple’s names and the date at the reception and the blue crystals on the soles of Sian’s shoes spelling out ‘I Do’.

Looking back on the day, Sian remembers feeling very re-laxed until she entered the church; it was at that moment that she felt very emotional seeing everyone there and Gimmi waiting for her at the altar.Gimmi recalls his own feelings: “I woke up happy and not overly excited. It hit me when we got into the car to go to the church and the closer it got to the start of the Mass the more nervous I became. I relaxed once I put the ring on her finger!”

No matter how well-organized one is, every wedding has a glitch or two. Gimmi describes how the best man got lost coming to the hotel to help him prepare and ended up run-ning from Valletta to Sliema: “Thankfully he is a profes-sional athlete so apart from the heat, took it in his stride!”

Then there was a fire scare during the cutting the cake, “one of the sparklers accidentally set the tissue paper in the sou-venirs baskets on fire! Thankfully my father reacted quick-ly saving most of the souvenirs and throwing the burning basket into the sea,” says Sian laughing at the memory

But these little mishaps could not ruin their perfect day. “We couldn’t have asked for more. Seeing all our friends and families gathered in one place with many having trav-

As often happens when a couple comes from different countries, there was some indecision as to where the wed-ding should took place. “In the end we chose Malta as it was easier to move Gimmi’s friends and family and it also was very appealing for them to combine their summer hol-idays. Everything got done with a few trips to Malta and plenty of internet research.”There were around 50 foreign guests coming mainly from Italy, with some of Sian’s family from the UK and Germa-ny/Austria while one good friend came all the way from the Unite States.

Gimmi was a very ‘hands-on’ groom and they consulted with one another on almost everything. Being Italian it is not surprising that he also had very strong opinions about what they should have on the menu.

“As we had a mix of nationalities we wanted to ensure there was something for everyone, including various veg-etarians. The mother of the bride is also gluten intolerant and they were wonderful in the way they prepared special items for her.”

The ceremony was held at the lovely church of Ta’ Giezu in Valletta followed by a reception at the Bedouin Bar at the Westin Dragonara Resort. The venue was an obvious choice as Sian had worked there before moving to Italy and the general manager Michael Kamsky is a good friend: “we knew we were in good hands.”

The cake had different tiers in almond and chocolate cake, and was decorated in Tiffany blue to match the couple’s colour scheme.

elled from abroad to be with us was a feeling I will never forget. Gimmi managed to surprise me by having the band learn the words (in Italian) he had written to propose to me and the singer sang it for our first dance! As for Gimmi, he rounds it all up with one of the most romantic things we have ever heard a man say, “I didn’t believe in marriage until I met Sian, it is a day I will remember for the rest of our lives.”

Sometimes when you are meant to meet “The One”, it is all about the timing, and being in the right place at the right time.Miguel has been working and pursuing his studies in the UK for the past six years and it was during one of his short visits to Malta four years ago that he and Marvic met at the Bedouin Bar at the Westin Dragonara Hotel.

“That was a memorable night. I was out with my friends dancing away by the pool when I caught a glimpse of a friend of mine who was with Miguel. We don’t usually see new faces around so I was curious! We were intro-duced, spoke casually and towards the end of the night, I offered Miguel a lift back to his as my car happened to be closer. As we chatted I learned that he was on a flight back to the UK the following day so we agreed to keep in touch.”

Unlike some casual encounters which fizzle out, in this case, they both kept our promise. “We added each other on Facebook and used to write lengthy emails describing every sin-gle detail of the day. I used to look forward to our daily communication. I must say that the emails which we exchanged between us helped to enhance our friendship and build a solid base for our upcoming relationship. Miguel always claims that he learnt so much from these chats and that, from the few lines we wrote, he fell in love with my sincerity, simplicity and honesty.”

When Miguel came back the following Sep-tember, the relationship really took off. “It felt as if we had known each other for a long time and we had so many things in common. From that point onwards, visits to and from Malta and the UK became frequent. Bless Leeds Bradford airport!” laughs Marvic,

It was during a stroll around the bastions after a lavish dinner at de Mondion Restaurant in Mdina, that Miguel surprised Marvic with an engagement ring and asked her if she was will-

ing to share the rest of her life with him. “Need-less to say, I was thrilled and excited! Eventu-ally I took the plunge and moved to the UK for good, which was one of the best and healthiest decisions I could have taken. It meant a step forward towards a more stable relationship and a better future together. The rest is history!”

Although she was still shopping around to get an idea of dresses and styles, Marvic ended up buying her dream dress almost immediately.

“I wanted a simple dress with a corset at the top, a sash at the waist with some rhinestones on, an A line skirt (not very wide) and a long veil. In fact, the dress which I chose was fitted at the waist and then opened up at the knees which created that fabulous figure hugging silhouette. I also wanted a touch of emerald green in the dress as it was the colour scheme chosen for the wedding. The jewellery, the shoes and the sash were all in emerald green.”

“It was literally love at first sight! As soon as I looked at it in the shop window, I turned to my Mum and sisters and told them that was exactly what I wanted. They insisted that I should see and try on others and not take any rushed deci-sions. So, I specifically asked to try that one first and it looked perfect from the first trial. Then I tried other dresses but the first one remained my preferred choice. And it barely needed any adjustments.”

Marvic chose her sisters to be bridesmaids and they naturally gave their input on their dresses. “They were my princesses for the night so what-ever suited them, was fine by me, as I wanted them to feel comfortable. They can even wear them again in future.” The one-shoulder emerald green dresses had a gold flowery sash going round their waist. The orchids with a tinge of green provided by florist Alistair Fenech for the bridesmaids’ hair com-plemented the dresses and their style.

Thanks to Joe Briffa’s expertise and his dedicated team at Hairoscope, Marvic and her bridal party had what she describes as the most winning wed-ding hairstyles ever. “On the day, he prepared my hair as well as that of my Mum and sisters. Our hair was simply gorgeous and elegant. With orchids as hair accessories, my sisters looked like real Thai girls.”

The couple went through a list of their closest friends to choose the roles of best man, ushers and witnesses. A lot of the communication was done by email and through Skype since a few of them live abroad.

“The bridal party wouldn’t have been complete without the involvement of Liam Zammit our cute page boy who is the son of one of Miguel’s close friends. Liam took great care of our wedding rings throughout the whole ceremony and he was simply over the moon to form part of the groom’s party. He couldn’t stop thanking us for giving him this op-portunity.”

Although they were based in the UK, there was never any question as to where the wedding would be held. “We have always wanted to get married here so that it would be easier for our relatives and Maltese friends to attend our wedding. As for our foreign friends, it was an opportunity for them to

visit Malta especially for those who had never been here before. And they simply loved each moment of their visit. “

“We had very positive feedback from our guests who live abroad and only a few could not make it. We were extremely happy to have 250 guests at our wedding, 30 of whom came from the UK, Luxem-bourg, Strasbourg and Brussels.”

Bernice Bugeja from Love is…was the wedding planner. “I would recommend her as she has been a good listener throughout and she always came up with many helpful hints and great suggestions espe-cially when too much excitement started to kick in closer to the date. Earlier on the day, Bernice made it a point to go to the venue and to the church to oversee that the preparations were going smoothly and with no hitches. During the course of the re-ception, she was ensuring that the schedule we had originally prepared for the celebrations was being followed.”

Wanting a well-planned and organised wedding, the couple made it a point to email e a list of duties to the best man, ushers and bridesmaids a few days be-fore the wedding. “We also asked the venue organ-iser and Bernice to prepare a layout of the seating area for our relatives and the dancing area to make sure that everyone would enjoy themselves and feel

comfortable during the reception. Two days before the wedding we met up to discuss the final details.”

One of the tasks which the groom diligently assumed and which Marvic was really grateful for, was the or-ganisation of a tour round Malta for their foreign guests. “Miguel contacted the well-known professional tour guide Ana DeBarro who gladly accepted to show our foreign guests around interesting places in Malta. My husband also joined them on the tour and I went to meet them all during their stop for lunch. Our foreign guests were so glad and thankful that they could enjoy the most popular sights and attractions of our country in such a short span of time.”

Marvic’s youngest sister was also constantly providing her advice on various matters especially the hairstyles, accessories and shoes. “I must say, she is so organized and such a perfectionist that I couldn’t ignore her crea-tive ideas! My father also contributed to our wedding preparations. He came up with this brilliant idea of having a red carpet laid outside our house throughout the path leading to the wedding car. Various candles and ‘fjakkoli’ were set up to create that perfect ambi-ance at dusk.”

The walk down the red carpet led the bride to her bridal car and then to Lapsi Catholic Church, a 17th century chapel situated in the heart of St Julian’s. This was followed by their Thai-themed venue, which was beautifully decorated by Alistair Floral Design. They

were surrounded by natural, brightly-coloured opulent flowers, plants, huts and waterfalls. The luscious waterfall and bridge provided the perfect backdrop for stunning photos.

The theme came about as a result of a wonderful three week holiday which Marvic spent in Thailand. “Green also happens to be my favourite colour and because em-erald green was the colour of the year 2014, I was im-mediately determined to have it as the main colour for our wedding. Thankfully, Miguel was in agreement with both ideas!”

“On the day, we had a stand up reception with free flow-ing drinks and a wide range of traditional and interna-tional cuisines. The weather favoured us so the terrace was opened for those guests who wished to stay outside and enjoy the splendid Portomaso views and the sur-rounding glorious marina views. Everything was perfect and our guests never stopped telling us how delicious the food was.”

They had a grand five-tier wedding cake and each tier had a piece of emerald green satin ribbon around it to complement the colour scheme. “The wedding cake was cleverly designed by the chef who managed to include the piping which we asked for (as suggested by Alistair, our florist) as an outer design. A few orchids were also used to decorate the cake. The round shaped cake was a mix-ture of baci and almond flavour fillings. Each tier had a

different filling. At the top of the first tier was a lovely cake topper made of two hugging figurines, which we bought from a leading retailer in the UK and which symbolizes the couple’s deep love.”

“On the same table near the cake we also had two cham-pagne glasses with our names engraved on them by my talented cousin Doris Zammit. I am glad she did them for us, as they now form part of our lovely glassware collec-tion. “

Although the day before the wedding Marvic was ex-tremely excited, on the day, she was more relaxed than she thought she would be. “I went up the aisle with a smiley face. However, the excitement as a result of all the prepara-tions came through during the ‘Lord’s Prayer’ which was beautifully sung by the very talented tenor Brian Cefai of Amadeus Chamber Choir. At that moment, tears were uncontrollably streaming down my cheeks. On the whole, though, I must admit that I remained calm throughout the wedding. I must also say that walking down the aisle hold-ing my father’s hand, the celebration of the entire Mass and exchanging our vows, were the most beautiful parts of the day.”

Marvic credits Bernice, her wedding planner for every-thing having gone smoothly, according to plan and ac-

cording to the timeline they had prepared together. Everyone else involved in the wedding also helped to make it a success from beginning to end. When asked to single out her special moments, Mar-vic recalls the Mass which was immensely beautiful and emotional throughout. “The sermon chosen by Rev. Raymond Bonnici was so meaningful that everyone present commented about it. The dancing session dur-ing our wedding reception was amazing and enjoyable thanks to our acoustic pop band. The last hour by vio-linist Simon Vella was superb and he kept playing till the very end.”

And finally Marvic made special mention of their very talented photographer Tonio Lombardi and videogra-pher Jonathan Grech. “I’m sure they captured the most vivid, lively and funniest moments ever throughout the whole night as all the guests kept them really busy and entertained. We are very pleased because at no point were we pestered for photos, yet we know that they will give us great memories of our wedding day.” “Instead of souvenirs, we gave a donation to Hospice Malta and we distributed bookmarks to our guests spe-cially designed by Hospice together with some choco-lates in organza bags.”

aviour and I met during our geography lectures at University back in 2005 where we used to see each other frequently,” says Diane. “We were not exactly close friends as we are both introverts, so we left much of the talking to the rest of our course mates. With Saviour being Gozitan and me being Maltese, we did not see much of each other once we graduated.”

However, a couple of years later, it was the change of her Facebook status to “single” that triggered Saviour to make the first move and contact Di-ane. “We went out on our first date against the romantic Mdina backdrop one November night, and the rest, as they say, is history. A few months later, an unexpected surprise changed our lives forever as I discovered I was pregnant. In order to be always near me, rather than going to and fro between Malta and Gozo, Saviour very thought-fully moved to Malta permanently. He does go to Gozo occasionally, however he has chosen Malta to be his primary residence now.”

Getting married was a natural, logical next step for this couple. It was more of a joint decision than a proposal: “Saviour is not the romantic type and is definitely not into proposals. I, on the other hand, did not want to be the one to pro-pose myself!”

None of that really mattered on their wedding day when they tied the knot in the presence of their gorgeous son Rafael, who by then was two and a half years old and was old enough to act as the ring bearer.

“With both of us working full-time to make ends meet and trying to divide our lives as best as we can between Malta and our sister island, I believe that we are indeed proof that true love can con-quer distances and any challenges life throws in one’s way.”

Diane opted for a sexy but elegant backless bead-ed wedding gown. The minute she tried it on, she

knew she had found the dress. “My lips immediately curved into a smile, unlike during other dress fittings which made me feel exasperated as I always found fault with some part of the dress.”

With her classically Maltese dark eyes and hair, Diane looked picture perfect with beautiful wedding make-up done by Francene Grima.

For the bridal party, Diane had her heart set on hav-ing them in mint-coloured dresses. She was lucky to find what she wanted in the correct shade online and when they arrived they only needed minor adjust-ments. However, when she decided she wanted to or-der matching stoles, the website she had ordered from could no longer be found. “The moral of the story for all brides to be out there is to trust only reliable sup-pliers. I then hunted all around Malta for matching material for the stoles, and finally succeeded.”

The men were outfitted in elegant tuxedos by Cefai Formal wear, who have shops in both Gozo and Mo-sta.

Diane was happy to leave certain thing in Saviour’s hands which she had absolutely no idea about, such as drinks, lighting and sound for the venue. Having said that, being an avid foodie, he also gave a good

contribution in choosing the food items for the wedding. He also made all honeymoon arrange-ments himself.

The ceremony was held at St. Gregory’s Church, Zejtun followed by a reception at The Saluting Bat-tery with catering by Island Caterers. The venue was chosen because the bride specifically wanted an outdoor venue and this place attracts thousands of locals and tourists alike. “Fortunately, it is also one of the few magnificent public places on the is-land where a wedding can be held. We visited no other wedding venues since we had our hearts and minds set on this venue from the very start. We were then very lucky that the weather on the day was just perfect. The venue was naturally beautiful so decorations were kept to a minimum. We wanted our guests to savour the breathtaking views of the Grand Harbour.”

“Our wedding was a mélange of Maltese and Gozi-tan wedding tradition. Our venue screamed Maltese heritage and was a hit with our guests. The recep-tion was a standing up event as customary in Malta, with only a few round tables for our immediate rela-tives. However, unlike the majority of Maltese wed-dings, the catering at the wedding consisted of sev-eral food stations as common in Gozitan weddings,

instead of the usual finger food/flying buffet.”

When compared to the big and bombastic cakes one sometimes sees, Diane says that their cake was a quite plain three tier cake in mint and white, with a white peony on top. “We wanted it to be beautiful in its simplicity.” Although this was the day she had been waiting for, Diane says she was very relaxed and composed throughout. In contrast the groom was rather nervous; he washed his hair when getting ready af-ter completely forgetting that he had just been to the hairdresser. During the ceremony Saviour also placed the ring on Diane’s right hand without real-ising it, but she was tactful enough not to point it out, although inwardly she was laughing.

“I enjoyed seeing Saviour so excited since he is normally a very mysterious person and only peo-ple who know him really well would know what is going on inside his head. I can say that, on that day, I married my lover and best friend, the one I laugh with, the one I laugh at, the one I cannot live without. Our wedding marked the start of another beautiful chapter of our life together.”

“I was branded by both our driver and our wed-ding photographer as the most focused bride ever, knowing the running order of the wedding per-fectly and staying calm throughout. I was aware of everyone who turned up at the church to watch us get married and was smiling and nodding at every-body upon entering the church. I was not nervous at all.”

lot of couples first meet at work, but even tough they were both working for the same company, this couple only met during a Christmas staff party. ‘We clicked instantly however for the first few months, we just dated during the weekends so as not to rush things, especially for Mark who had just ended a relationship.

It was when Mark was abroad with friends that the relationship turned more serious as they tex-ted each other every day. Absence does indeed make the heart grow fonder. When he came back, they spent every second of their free time together even though both of them had a tight working schedule.

“Somehow we knew that we were meant for each other. A year and a half passed by and it came natural to both of us to start thinking about marriage and about our future home. There was no proposal, we just mentioned it and knew that was what we wanted. We both agreed to have a summer wedding and Mark suggested to get

married on my 25th birthday to make it even more special.”

Rachel took her time choosing the right dress: “I knew that I wanted to try both ball gown and mermaid dresses since I’m quite girly when it comes to style. Finding the right one was very difficult for me since I pay a lot of attention to detail and I also wanted something different. I admit that I was falling in love with the expe-rience of trying on many beautiful dresses. In fact I went through over twenty dresses before choosing the one.”

After having visited most of the bridal shops and still had not finding anything she liked, she decided to take a break and wait for the new col-lections. “Eight months before my wedding, I decided to re-visit the first shop that I had gone to which was Weddingbells. I remember that my mother and I arrived early for the appointment so we just walked by to take a sneak peek at the dresses

shown in their window. When I arrived, I was im-mediately drawn to a dress that was on display and I knew that at the start of the appointment, I wanted to have a closer look. I was so in love with the Swarovski detail and the style of the dress from the Farage collection. I knew that I had to try this one first and as soon as my mother saw the dress on me, I got the ‘wow’ expression that I was waiting for. I felt the same way and I did not want to take it off, so at that moment, I knew it was the one.”

The bridal party was made up of Rachel’s closest cousin and her two best friends. “It was not that difficult to agree on the style of their dresses since they have similar tastes. They definitely knew the colour that I was going for because everyone that knows me closely knows that I love pink.”

The ushers were the couple’s siblings and in-laws, “the people we trust most to handle our day.”Most of the preparations were done by the bride and her mother however the groom did have the

responsibility to order the alcohol, discuss the fireworks display and organize the after hours party.Aspects of the wedding which involved detail and creativity were in Rachel’s hands since she had a clearer vision of how their day should be. Major decisions such as the choice of venue, food menu and music were taken together.

The Mass took place at St. Joseph the worker, Par-ish Church, Birkirkara followed by a reception at overlooking the Valletta Bastions. “We wanted to have a spectacular view to create a romantic atmosphere. This was enhanced by the beautiful arrangements which Joseph from Flower Arts made for us not only at the church but through-out the venue.”

They had a simple but elegant 3 tier cake deco-rated with fresh pink orchids. “Knowing that it was an important feature in the wedding, we decorated the area with a fairy light curtain and a chandelier hanging above it.”

As the venue was right by the sea and had its own private marina, Rachel and Mark thought that it would be a great idea to arrive on a yacht, something that you don’t usually see at a wed-ding. “We managed to surprise our guests and most importantly, we enjoyed that special mo-ment together taking photos surrounded by beautiful views during sunset.”

The attention to all the little details paid off and they managed to have a bit of everything for eve-ryone to enjoy. This included a pink cocktail bar, a candy bar and a photo booth. The entertain-ment was provided by one of the experts in this field, Tunin Entertainment. The lovely souvenirs were purchased from Kudos, who specialise in wedding favours and accessories.

“We would like to thank all the vendors who un-derstood our vision and helped us create a fun and memorable day especially for Rachel who celebrated her 25th birthday.”
