2. What is Linux? Linux is an operating system. Linux is a clone of Unix Operating system but unlike many versions of Unix, Most versions are free. Linux is multitasking and multiuser operating system. Linux is robust and scalable. Linux is stable. Linux is growing in popularity. Linux is an open source as most application are available free. Linux is secure. 3. History of Linux? In 1991 Linux Torvalds (university of health sinki in Finland) developed Linux kernel and it is freely available to download. Back in 1983 the free software foundation(F.S.S) began developing open source software to create a free Unix operating system that is GNU (GNU is not Linux) Around 1991 the GNU utilities where combined with the Linux kernel. 4. Types of Linux? Linux DistributionLinux Clones 5. Linux Distribution: A Linux distribution is a Precompiled and Prepackaged version of Linux. It may offers certain features and software application that other don't have. For example: Red-hat, Debain, Suse, Gento, Mandrake, Ubuntu, Linux mint etc. 6. Linux Clones: A Linux clone is a Linux version based on a certain distribution. For Example: Centos and Whitebox enterprise Linux take Red-hat enterprise source and pre-compiled it. 7. Linux Vs Unix: Linux is Unix like operating system.Unix is the original.Unix is broken down into system-V and Berkeley Software Distribution(BSD). Unix typically run on larger mini computers. Whereas Linux is made for P.C and lower end server. 8. Principal of Unix: Everything is a file.Configuration file is stored in test file.There are small programs that does one thing well at a time and doesn't focus on extra features. Programs can be chained together.
