Signature dish categories include meat, side dish, salad, and dessert.

The Deadline for registration is June 10th, and a mandatory orientation at 11am, on June 11th or June 18th, at the Grubb YMCA. You can register online at caleo.wufoo.com/forms/fathers-and-families-cookout-cook-registration/ or visit the Grubb YMCA’s Facebook page.

THE EVELYN K. DAVIS CENTER AND EMBARC TEAM UP TO SERVE BURMA COMMUNITY

Noticing any changes around Des Moines lately?

The Evelyn K. Davis Center for Working Families definitely recognizes a change in the growing communities within Des Moines, especially for a group of refugees who are from Burma.

As presented on the EMBARC website, the United States has resettled about 70,000 refugees from Burma to escape some of the most repressive and abusive military regimes known. Many of these individuals have faced human rights violations such as “forced labor, land confiscation, rape, detention, torture, and death,” which has been taking place for the past 50 years.

Burma is home to 8 main ethnic groups and more than one hundred sub-groups. Iowa has a large concentration of 3 ethnic groups who identify as Chen, Karen, and Karenni. According to the State Department, over 1,000 refugees have been directly relocated and are now settled in Iowa. In the last few years, an additional 4,000 have come to Iowa as secondary migrants to look

for better opportunities for work and for their families. (reprinted from Ethnic Minorities of Burma Advocacy and Resource Center http://www.embarciowa.org/refugees/burma/)

Now what?

Iowa has gained an estimated 5,000 refugees in the community, a number that is quickly growing. These individuals and families have completely changed lanes in life and are needing extra support and resources to make this transition successful. Many experience culture shock, language barriers, depression, PTSD, and lack of educational attainment to name a few. There simply isn’t enough hands in the pot to get the needs of this population met. Thus, RefugeeRISE AmeriCorps was launched in 2015 through the Iowa Commissioner on Volunteer Service in response to this recognized need.

On March 24th, 2016, Michael Toner, RefugeeRISE AmeriCorps member, and Jason Vang, Program and Resource Specialist at the Evelyn K. Davis Center for

Working Families, met to discuss what current needs the communities that EMBARC serves were facing. After a few meetings, it was decided that Digital Literacy was a great need for this community. In modern day society, technology is vital for almost every aspect of life and the basic computing skills that many of us take for granted each day are unknown to many individuals within the EMBARC community.

Thanks to the participation of Evelyn K. Davis Center’s current Digital Literacy Class facilitator, Talmadge Keown, we were able to plan a Digital Literacy Class specifically catered to individuals who utilize EMBARC’s services. This class will target about 15 young adults to help them learn about topics such as basic computer skills, safe online navigating and practices, and how to self-facilitate job searches, email, and Microsoft Office. There will be two back-to-back sessions held on June 21st and 22nd at the Evelyn K. Davis Center. The Center is very grateful for the opportunity to partner with EMBARC in order to help meet the needs of the communities they serve.

GRUBB YMCA FATHERS & FAMILIES COOKOUTMark your calendars; the date is quickly approaching!! Saturday, June 25th, the Grubb YMCA will be hosting their annual event that is the cornerstone of healthy communities.

When fathers are engaged in building the foundation of their family children are less likely to engage in risky behavior, children become better learners, schools become primed for great teaching and learning and our communities become healthy and vibrant.

The weekend after Father's Day, men will gather to share their favorite dish with family, friends and community.

Fathers, uncles and brothers will cook, bake, and/or grill their signature dish to serve in sample servings with attendees.

Wristbands will be available for the attendees who wish to participate in the cooking competition — $5/adult, and $2/child.

Don’t wish to participate in the contest? No problem. There will be plenty of other entertainment provided, from live music, games, storytelling, and giveaways. And let’s not forget the bounce houses, face painting and other activities for the kids.
