Thanks to the compassionate care of Advocate Children’s Hospital associates and physicians, the hospital has been listed for the fourth consecutive year among the nation’s top 50 pediatric hospitals for cardiology and heart surgery in U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Children’s Hospitals” 2014-2015 rankings. And, for the third year in a row, the publication ranked Advocate Children’s Hospital among the top 50 in neonatology.

“Being ranked among the country’s leaders in pediatric care highlights our hospital’s commitment to our patients and their families, the strength and experience of our health care teams and our ability to deliver the highest level of treatment in the safest manner possible,” said Michael Farrell, president of Advocate Children’s Hospital.

RTI International (Research Triangle Institute) collected and analyzed the data for determining the “Best Children’s Hospitals” rankings. Whether or not a hospital was ranked and where in the rankings it was slotted depended on its performance in three areas: clinical outcomes and rates of various infections; efficiency and coordination of care delivery, which includes

compliance with best practices and steps taken to control infection; and care-related resources, such as adequacy of nursing staff and availability of programs tailored to particular illnesses and conditions.

In the pediatric cardiology/heart surgery category, Advocate Children’s Hospital was graded “high” for survival outcomes after complex heart surgeries and for

Norwood /hybrid surgery survival and rated “very good” in prevention of infections.

In neonatology, the hospital was rated “superior” for prevention of infections in the neonatal intensive care unit, “high” for its ability to minimize 30-day readmissions to the hospital and “very good” for use of infection-preventing measures.

“Our children’s hospital excels in providing innovative solutions to pediatric heart problems that are so complex most other hospitals in the region are unable to address them,” said Rabi Sulayman, MD, pediatric cardiologist and chair of pediatrics at Advocate Children’s Hospital-Oak Lawn.

2014 Associate Giving Campaign in Full Swing!As a not-for-profit organization, Advocate Health Care relies on charitable contributions to extend access to care, enhance the patient experience, foster innovation and improve health care outcomes. Some of our most generous donors are our own associates and physicians. The annual Associate Giving Campaign (AGC) is our chance to make a difference for both our patients and fellow associates by supporting the programs that mean the most to us through charitable contributions.

This year, associates are encouraged to give back to the Advocate Children’s Hospital fund that encompasses both the Oak Lawn and Park Ridge campus. Last year, Advocate Children’s Hospital received more than $134,000 from associates across the Advocate system, helping the hospital expand programs and services to young patients and their families. Funds from last year’s campaign included helping bring ProActive Kids to the Park Ridge campus, offer sibling support groups and provide grief support services at the time of death and beyond.

Only a week into the campaign and associates have pledged nearly $83,000 in support of Advocate Children’s Hospital. This year’s priority funds include the associate crisis fund, child life programming, pediatric cardiology and pediatric hematology/oncology departments. Safety First...Always

Safety and high-reliability are the number one priorities for associates and leaders throughout the Advocate system. Below is a good catch that can be a lesson learned

for all associates:

Lauren Fishback RN, from Oak Lawn, had received an order to administer IVF that contained a higher level of KCl than we would normally administer on a routine

basis to treat dehydration. She verified that the KCl lab value of the patient was within normal limits, and then “Asked” the rationale behind that specific IVF order to the resident. After the rationale was given, she “requested” it be brought to the attending’s attention. She again voiced her “Concern” and then brought it up the “Chain of Command” in which another attending had discussed an alternative set of IVF to administer, subsequently then having the order changed.

Pediatric Patients Paint Chicago Cubs Centennial Seats for Mag Mile

Chicago Bears chairman George McCaskey, team mascot Staley, and head coach Marc Trestman along with wife, Cindy, and daughter, Chloe made a special visit to Advocate Children’s Hospital in Park Ridge on May 28, 2014.

During their warm and exciting visit, the group put smiles on the faces of many patients and even a few staff members. They took the time to make individual stops at nearly 50 patient rooms within general pediatric including oncology, pediatric intensive care unit and adolescent psychology. McCaskey & company distributed teddy bears, appropriately dressed in Chicago Bears attire, and distributed autographed flags, hats and other Bears memorabilia to some of our bigger kids and their families.

“Having such a special visit from Chicago Bears owner George McCaskey, along with coach Marc Trestman and his wonderful family, was such a sensational experience for our patients and their families. Even with hospitalizations that are filled with procedures, tests and medication, these moments are what our children and families often remember most. Art for the SoleWhen Liz, a huge Blackhawks fan, painted the team’s feathers and signature tomahawk C on her shoes, she had no idea the frenzy she was about to create. Within weeks, she was

receiving requests from all over the country. Rather than sell these shoes to line her pockets, this 15 year old paints the shoes in her free time (which is very limited) and donates a portion of the proceeds to The Ross K. MacNeill Foundation to support pediatric brain cancer research and the Bryan & Amanda Bickell Foundation for pit bull awareness. She also has painted shoes for kids who are cancer survivors at no charge and donates shoes to be auctioned at fundraising events.

One pair of Liz’s hand-painted shoes was recently presented to an avid Hawks fan and Advocate Children’s Hospital patient named Haley. Haley is currently undergoing extensive treatment for a rare form of brain cancer. Liz donated a second pair for a fundraising event for Team Haley and held an ebay auction with a third pair to raise money and awareness for Team Haley. The custom painted pair of Blackhawks high top sneakers were sold to the highest bidder for an incredible $350.

Liz’s mother Lynne stated, “Meeting Haley … strengthened our commitment to do all we could to raise awareness and money to get to the end game--finding a cure and working on better treatments for kids.”

Advocate Medical Group (AMG), along with Advocate Children’s Hospital (ACH), is pleased to announce the appointment of Duane David Stich, MD, as medical director, neonatology services.

In his role as medical director, neonatology services, Dr. Stich will collaborate with ACH and AMG leadership, to ensure exceptional health outcomes for neonates. In partnership with AMG and ACH, Duane will be responsible for establishing and developing relationships between neonatology groups and community pediatricians across the Advocate system.

“Dr. Stich is a valuable addition to AMG and brings tremendous leadership and experience to this role,” said Francesca Mattone-Volpe, MD, vice president of pediatrics and pediatric subspecialties for AMG. “We are fortunate to have him support our neonatology services.”

Dr. Stich earned his medical degree at Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wis. He went on to complete both his pediatric residency and neonatology fellowship at Advocate Children’s Hospital in Park Ridge, Ill., where he was also appointed the chief fellow in neonatology.

Dr. Stich is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and The American College of Physician Executives, as well as a member of multiple committees in his specialty.
