WhentheIdahoStatesman’s
readers surveydebuted in 1988, itwasnamed theBest ofBoise. In those earlyyears, wediscoveredthings about ourselvesthatwould raise eye-browsnowadays. BestFries?McDonald’s.BestVideoStore?Blockbuster. (What ISthis “video store”thingy you speak of?)But as theCity ofTrees grew, so did the poll. Thenamewas changed toreflect our expandingpopulation base. Our tasteswidened, too. In 2013,wehave categories likeBestSushi (in Idaho?). This year, there’s evenBest Brewery, reflecting our explosive craft beermarket.Readersmake it happen.Voting online, they choose thetopdog in each category—theBest ofTreasureValley.Other top finishers are listed as runners-up.It’s an exciting process, even if counting all those votesgets a little tiring.Yo, cut us some slack. In canine years,Best ofTreasureValley is gettin’ up there—182 years old!—and still pulling hard on the leash.

Therewas a timewhenthe IdahoBotanicalGar-dendid not rock—unlessflowers andherbs are youridea of a good thyme. Buteverything changedwhentheOutlawField SummerConcert Series began in2008with help frompro-moterKnitting Factory.Talk about a garden grow-ing. It took voters a fewyears to push it to the top,but the 4,000-capacity out-door venue finally haswonBestMusicVenue. (Knitting Factory’sDowntownBoise concert housewon this category the last several years.)
The garden’s under-the-sky, bring-a-blanket atmosphere doesn’t hurt. That viewof the Foothills never gets old. Plus, patrons arewelcome tohaul in picnic baskets and low-back chairs. This summer, the gardenhaspumpedup the volumewith a diverse lineup ranging fromshows for theyoung (ImagineDragons,May 21; Fun,Aug. 28) to the young at heart(SteelyDan,Aug. 11;WillieNelson,Aug. 25).
And,of course, let’snot forget about the longstanding, intimateGreatGardenEscapemusic series, whichshowcases local entertainers inside thegardenonThursdays. (“It’s cooler in thegarden,”organizers like to say.)
Combined, these options are a one-twopunch thatmade the choiceeasy for voters.

OK,weknowwe’re notAustin orNashvilleor Seattle, butwedohave someamazingmu-sicians lurking amongus inBoise. CurtisStigers is one of them—andabusy one atthat. This summer, he’ll tour inEurope (in-cluding aweeklong stint at the legendaryRonnie Scott’s JazzClub inLondon), performat theAlbertsonsBoiseOpen andhelp planthe concert portion of theMayor’s Sesquicen-tennial Ball this fall. Thenhe’ll release a newalbumnext spring.
Aphilanthropist in his spare time, Stigershas created the powerhouse benefitXtremeHolidayXtravaganza, which raisesmoney forInterfaith Sanctuary homeless shelter eachyear. His latest project is theMcCall Jazz Fes-tival,whichhe’s introducing this summer tobenefit the Shepherd’sHome, a shelter carefacility for children inMcCall. He’s alsoworking on creating a project to benefit andsupport professionalmusicians in theTreas-ureValley.
Stigers recentlywas named InternationalMale Singer of theYear at theGermanEchoJazzAwards (again!), but he’s still quite hon-ored to top little ol’ Best ofTreasureValley.“I’m touched to be recognized bymyhome-townpaper,” he said in an email from—where else?—overseas. “I’mproud to be aBoisean and an Idahoan, and to be amemberof such a lively, thriving and growingmusicscene.Vive leBoise!”

THEFLICKS
BESTMOVIETHEATER
Most theaters these days are as loud, dramaticandover-the-top as themovies that play on theirscreens. Fromextra-cushy reclining chairs to 3-Dgoggles, glitzy lobbies and gut-busting food, theenvironment is asmuch apart of the experienceas themovie itself.
Not atTheFlicks—at least not in an aggres-sive, in-your-faceway.Maybe that’swhy, for thepast four years, readers have votedBoise’s art-house theater the topmovie house.
Since opening its doors in 1984,TheFlicks hasstrived to bedifferent—andnot just bywelcom-ing indie and foreign films on its four screens. Forone thing, beer andwine are served. (Every-thing’s betterwith beer—right, ladies?Howelseare you going to persuade your guy to sit throughtwohours of subtitles?)AndTheFlicks has an im-pressivemenu atRick’sCafeAmericain, making“dinner and amovie” akin to one-stop shopping.Want a fullmeal?Try lasagna or a burger.Anon-popcorn snack?Try the hummus andpita or brieandFrenchbread.Thepatio iswarmand inviting, and youmight just get so caught up in conversa-tion that youdecide to rent amovie instead—which is totally doable inTheFlicks’ rental sec-tion. (You can even check online to peruse filmsand seewhether they’re currently available.)

IDAHOSHAKESPEAREFESTIVAL
There’s nothing like abeautiful Idaho summernight under the stars. Addsome incredible actors, di-rectors, designers andpro-duction staff to the breath-taking ambience andyoumight just convert someonewho typically shies awayfrom“high-brow” entertain-ment.
The approachability ofthe IdahoShakespeare Festi-val has contributed to itswin in this category for thepast eight years. A “come-as-you-are” atmosphere in-vites everyone—youngorold, wealthy or common, theater novice orexpert— to spend an evening entrancedbyspectacularlywritten andperformedplaysandmusicals.Whether youbring a blanketand apicnic or choose to sit at a table andenjoy the fare fromCafe Shakespeare, you’llget the opportunity to experience Shake-speare theway itwasmeant to be.
Under the direction of ProducingArtisticDirectorCharles Fee, the companyhas de-veloped an accessible theatrical style that isoftendisplayedwith contemporary twistson classical plays. Backedbymeticulouslycrafted sets and costumes, and infiltrated by
interesting soundscapes created byTonyAward-nominatedPeter JohnStill, thisworld-class production company is some-thingBoise should beproudof.

Consistent service and a familiarmenuhave keptGoldenStar a repeat favorite forTreasureValley diners.
Foundedby fourChinese immigrants—Larry andShirley Louie andSusie andShakLee—the restaurant is twoyears shyof
marking a half-century on theBoiseBench.ShakLeehas since passed away, but the otherthree remain involved.
“Whenwe first came, (Orchard) fromFranklin onwas just a dirt road,” Larry said.
With somuchhistory, the restaurant hasearned an established fan base that it pleaseswith amix of regularmeals and rotatinghouse specials. A recent day featured chowmeinwithMandarin chicken and an egg roll.
Larry Louie believesGoldenStar’s successis due to three keypriorities: great ingredi-ents, reasonable prices and a focus on cus-tomer service.
“And thatmakes people happy,” he said. “Ithink that’smost important to bring themback.”

MODERNHOTELANDBAR
Thebar isn’t the centerpiece ofTheModern—a reinventedTravelodge—but it’s pretty darn close.The low-lit loungewithmidcentury-moderndesign and the fire-lit patio are desti-nations forBoise cocktail fans.
TheModern earned accolades lastyear fromGQ in a feature story thatlauded the inventions of bespectacledbartenderMichael Bowers andpraised the “ethereal gnocchi.”
Themenuhas no generic cocktails.Instead, there’s the LongWeekend—rum, lime, cucumber, pineapple, mintand soda—and theCaravel, with itscelery bitters, or theHankyPankywith flamedorange. The chowrangesfrombraised oxtail ragout tomac andcheesemadewith kale andherbs.Muchof it is locally sourced.
If there’s a flaw in execution, it’s
that someof the esoteric recipes are, well, esoteric. Youmight endupquizzing your friendly server on thedifference betweenAperol andCampari, or pulling out a smart-phone to lookup “demerara” (a kindof sugar). But hey, it’s all part ofTheModern’s charm.

There are anynumber of reasons thatGoodwoodBarbe-cueCo. has become so successful since the first restaurantopened inBoise in 1999.There’s the brisket andpulled porkthat cooks overnight for amelt-in-your-mouth experience. There’s the prime rib, steaks and chicken—all fine choices.
And then there are the beef ribs. Big,meaty beef ribs.“As far as I know, those are pretty unique to us,” said co-

beef ribs disappeared from themenu for threemonths.“Guestswere furious,”Mantooth said.So he andhis staffmake sure to keep the beef ribs com-

This perennialwinner of the breakfast category specializes in less-obviousmorning fare. Red flannel hashwith beets, bacon andpotatoes. Smoked salmonhashwith redpotatoes, onions and capers, toppedwith hollandaise.Andalusianeggs, poachedovermarinara andbakedwith ham, chorizo, asparagus andpep-pers. SourdoughFrench toast stuffedwith bananas, butter, walnuts, cinnamonandbrown sugar. If you’re in themood for hash browns, take your pick of regu-lar or sweet potato.
The abbreviated lunchmenu ismostly comfort food—hammelt, fish andchips, baconburger, that kindof thing. But a few surprises lurk, like theCalifor-niawrap,whichpairs turkey, roasted redpeppers, avocado and saladwithherbed creamcheese andpestomayo.

We’ve all heard the expressionbefore: “Adollar just doesn’t goas far as it used to.” It conjures vi-sions of a crotchety old-timer sit-ting in a rocking chair on thefront porch, scolding the rowdyteens to keep theirmusic down.Noweven the kids apply theadage, recalling the days of yorewhen songs cost 99 cents insteadof $1.29.
Getting a bite to eat is no ex-ception to rising costs, but there are placesscattered across theTreasureValleywhereyoudon’t have to spend $10 to fill yourself up.LosBetos has a bargain hunter’s bounty of op-tions, and regardless of price, the food tastespretty darn good, too.
Whether you’re trying to save a dollar ortwo, are looking for a treat or just simplywanta goodplace to grab ameal, you’rewelcomeatLosBetos. It’s open 24hours a day, so eventhosewith the busiest schedules can find time
todropby.With lower prices, the
expectation is for food sizesto get smaller. (Howmanytimes have you ordered a $1burger and thought youwould bemore full eatingthe dollar bill itself?) Butthere’s no skimping at LosBetos. Burritos, enchiladasand even the side orders ofrefried beans or rice arecolossal. You and yourwal-letwill be full—but don’tleave before you get a freerefill for the road.

BOISEFRYCO.
Receiving this award in a state renownedfor its potatoes is quite the honor, andBoiseFryCo. has built itself one heck of a reputa-tion.
Fries normally don’t requiremuch thought—you’re basically deciding onwhat size toorder atmost restaurants. That’s only the tipof the iceberg at Boise FryCo.
First, pick fromamong six potatoes: Rus-set, gold, Laura, yam, sweet andpurple.Next, choose your cut fromshoestring, regular, homestyle, curly or po’ balls. There’s also thebourgeois, their finest-cut fried in duck fatwith truffle salt. Once you’vemade those de-cisions, it’s time to decidewhat you’ll be dip-ping them in.Thehead-spinning array in-cludes options such as blueberry ketchup, malt vinegar, sea salt and chipotle aioli.
Beef, vegan andbuffalo burgers also are
available here, but don’t dare think about or-dering the burger first. Theburger comeswith the fries at Boise FryCo.

One theme that runs throughout Italiancooking ismaking the best ofwhat’s avail-able. That concept, alongwith the foreigninfluences that have comeandgone (espe-cially inNaples and the southernpart of thecountry), created the dishes featured atGino’s that are so hard to decide between—whether it’s antipasti, primi, secondi or dol-ci. Rest assured that nomatterwhat youchoose, itwill be awinner.

When it comes to seafood in theTreasureValley, FreshOff TheHook is the great white shark at thetop of the food chain. The restau-rant perennially dominates this cat-egory, andwith a new location inDowntownBoise to accompany itsquaint store onMilwaukee Street,it’s difficult to imagine that chang-ing anytime soon.
Calamari, crab, shrimp, scallops, clams and, of course, all kinds offish are on amenu stuffed full offresh and quality dishes. One tried-and-true test of a seafood restau-rant is always the fish and chips, and FreshOff TheHook’s receivesanA-plus. Themoist, goldenyellowmorsels of breadedAlaskancod (also availablewithmahimahi, halibut, salmon, clam strips or jum-bo shrimp)melt in yourmouth, andthe crunchy fries that comewiththem are very good. It should come as no surprise to devotedBest of TreasureValley readers thatMetroExpress added yet another title. Since openingin 2004, it haswiped out its competition in thiscategory.
Metro Express’ original carwash, on the cor-ner of 13th and Front streets inDowntownBoise, is extremely difficult tomiss for anyonedriving on theConnector, especially at night. Its glowing, cool-blue neon sign is easy to see, lighting up the building beneath and pleasantlydrawing glances from the road. Even owners ofspotless cars— thosewithout even a neutrinoof dirt on them—start thinking itmay be timeto choose between theDowntownwash ($7),Uptown ($10) orUptownwith tire gloss ($12).Free vacuums comewith eachwash.
Metro Express nowhas two other locations—one inNampa and one on the corner of PineAvenue andEagleRoad inMeridian. So if
you’re backed up onEagleRoad, instead ofmuttering obscenities at other drivers, swing inand get a quick 5-minute carwash. As a bonus, there’s a great chance your same spot in trafficwill bewaiting for youwhen you get out.
InMay,Mister CarWash acquired all threeMetro Express locations. The nameof the carwasheswill eventually change toMister, butthe facilities should remainmostly the same.

The streamofDown-townworkers braving fivelanes of Front Street atlunch time proves thatWhole FoodsMarket is aphenomenon.
Some customers visit thestore five or six times aweek.Whole Foods openedinNovember onDown-town’s eastern edge, chal-lenging the BoiseCo-op fornatural-foods supremacy.
The $7.99-per-poundfood bar is themost popularfeature, offering breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s nextto the coffee bar, which isnext to the sushi bar. A bak-ery selling $4 and $5 boules(that’s “bool,” French for
ball) is a fewmore steps tothe left. Upstairs is theRiv-er Room, a slider-and-pizzarestaurantwith beer, wineand a Foothills view.
StoreTeamLeader BruceGreen says the average cus-tomer spends $30 per visit.Hewon’t disclose revenues, but it’s a safe bet theywilltop $25million the firstyear.
Themarket employsabout 200workers; about120 are full-time. Five ofevery sixwere hired locally.
Parking spaceswere hardto find at first, but the storerecently added 75 on theMyrtle Street side. Theymight be replaced someday
withmore stores and aparking garage.
Whole Foods supportsdozens of local charities.SaysGreen: “We’reworkinghard to be good communitypartners aswell as a suc-cessful business.”

Awise persononce said,“Never judge someoneuntilyou’vewalked amile in theirshoes.”
People and their footwearhave a surprisingly close rela-tionship,with eachone strange-ly reflecting the other: Cinderel-la andher glass slippers, CosmoKramer andhis strength-train-ing shoes andMartyMcFlywithhis high-tops.
With billions of personalitiesin theworld (and for the sake of this cate-gory, a fewhundred thousand in theTreas-ureValley) and just asmanyoccasions, it’simportant to have the options and confi-dence in shoes thatDillard’s provides.
Finding the proper shoe canbe a swift, utilitarian exercise or a comprehensive, detailed process. Choosing your next paircanbe a difficult decision, and it’s good toknowDillard’s helpful employees are al-wayswilling to check on a size or find a
better fit.Dillard’s display ofwomen’s shoes is as-
tounding, with a seemingly endless supplyof styles and colors. Pumps, sandals, wedges, flats, loafers, athletic shoes, bootsand slippers are amongDillard’s bounty.Themen’s selection is equally impressive.
Thequalitymatches thequantitywithbrands suchasAntonioMelani,GianniBi-ni, Johnston&Murphy,Nike,Eccoandmanymore.
The selection is only the beginning—the scuffs, polish, nicks, dirt, mileage andcharacter are up to their owners.

OK, admit it. Aunt Sylvia’s here fromout of town in September, sowhat do you always, always, always do? Spend a Saturdaymorning buying hotmini donuts and fresh cornon8thStreet?Check. Stroll along theGreenbelt?Check.Quick drive past BroncoStadiumand theSimplot flagwith a stop at theDepot? Check, check and check.
And, the piece de resistance?Art in thePark.Bynow theArt in thePark creation story is Boise legend:Agroupof early-day artists and
art lovers beganmeeting to talk about art and, in 1937, createdwhat is nowBoiseArtMuse-um(BAMto the cool kids). Art in theParkwas birthed in themid-1950s as an alternative forartistswhodidn’tmake the IdahoArtist Exhibit: Theyhung theirwork on lines strungontrees. Theoutsiders had the last laugh: Art in thePark became thepremiermuseum’s pre-mier event.
That back story hints atwhy it’s theValley’s favorite community event: It really is foreverybody—the collector snob, the uber-organizedholiday shopper, the tattooedhipsterand the familywith the double stroller and the goldenLab looking for kettlecorn and straw-berry lemonade.

Thewords “Idaho” and “outdoors”are nearly synonymous, andperhapsnowhere is that close relationship bet-ter embodied than inMcCall. Amongthepines 5,000 feet above sea level andon the shores of Payette Lake 100milesnorth of Boise on Idaho 55, the fresh airbeckons yououtside.
Winter is the predominant season inMcCall, and as the birds instinctivelyhead south towarmer temperatures,TreasureValley skiers and snowboard-ers flock north toBrundageMountainResort. Brundage averages 320 inches ofsnowfall annually and tries its best to beopen fromThanksgiving to earlyMay,so it’s possible to ski or snowboardthere sevenmonths of the year.Don’tfeel like hitting the slopes?Checkoutthe snowsculptures atMcCall’sWinterCarnival (Jan. 24-Feb. 2, 2014), or go

Itmaynot be SanDiego, but ZooBoise is a favorite placeforTreasureValley families. There’s a lot to love about ourmodest zoo. What it lacks in size, itmakes up for in quality.A trip toZooBoise is fun, educational and entertaining forthe entire family. And it’s affordable.
Besides being able to seemore than 200 types of animals, patrons can feed the giraffes andbear sloth, take the conser-vation cruise across the lagoon, get up close andpersonalwith butterflies in the butterfly encounter, enjoy thewallabywalkabout, or go through the zoo farm.
Kidswill love the giraffe slide and carousel or droppingtheir conservation coins in the vortex bank at the entry.Thezoo is small enough to get through in a fewhours, but inter-esting enough that you’llwant to stay all day.
Oneof the best features of ZooBoise is its commitmentto conservation.Aportion of your entrance fee, certain en-counters andbeverage purchases are donated to a conser-vation cause.

BESTHISTORICSPOT
At the doorstep of the BoiseFoothills and under the cross onTableRock, theOld Idaho Peniten-tiary feelsmiles away from reality.
Something is different insidethesewalls— something themindconstantly struggles to figure out asit’s bombarded by the sight of coldsteel bars, varying degrees of darkinteriors and, mostmysterious ofall, the anxious sound of silence.Perhaps it’s the spirits of those im-prisoned here between 1872 and1973, the soulless stone andmetalthat once confined society’s out-casts, or amixture of empathy, pityand fear. You knowno one is lockedup, but there’s a tiny relief gained
by peering into each cell to see itempty.
TheOld Pen is vacant, but eachcell’s character is verymuch alive.Etchings on thewalls of death rowand “Siberia” (solitary confine-ment) plead, cackle and rebel. In an-other cell house, “Molly Lane, 1354Hancock St., Quincy,Mass.” iswrit-ten underneath a bed folded ontothewall, and like aRorschach test, themind stretches to solvewhat itcannot:What didMolly look like?HowareQuincy,Mass., and Idahorelated? Is the address for love let-ters or vengeance?
TheOld Pen affects everyone dif-ferently—some leave and triple-
check tomake sure they’re at leastamile-per-hour under the speedlimit, and others hear the roars ofinmates listening to JohnnyCashsinging “Cocaine Blues” at FolsomPrison.Which one are you?
