Welcome to Arlington!SEPTEMBER 9, 2015

On behalf of my fellow Commissioners, the Executive Director, and the professional staff at ACCSC, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Arlington, Virginia for the 2015 ACCSC Professional Development Conference (PDC).

Now in its ninth year, the ACCSC PDC is designed to provide a dynamic slate of training opportunities for ACCSC-accredited institutions - from half-day workshops to a variety of break-out sessions - across a range of topics relevant to postsecondary career and

technical education. In addition, the PDC continues its tradition of being a membership-driven event with the pre-conference workshops and educational break-out sessions being created, implemented, and presented by school administrators and faculty representing the ACCSC community who bring their perspectives to the conference. The result is a unique training event centered around best practices from an institution’s point of view where participants can share ideas that will enhance the educational experience for the thousands of students that attend an ACCSC-accredited institution each year.

But the PDC is so much more than just training. The PDC is all about community. It provides an opportunity for the membership to not only hear directly from the leadership of the Accrediting Commission on the latest initiatives and activities impacting the sector, but an opportunity to participate in ACCSC’s “Community of Partners in Education” and celebrate the achievements of the 2015 ACCSC Award Winners, including the Outstanding Volunteers, Outstanding Graduate, the Schools of Distinction and Schools of Excellence, and many more.

On behalf of ACCSC, I want to thank you for the work that you and your institutions do for your graduates, your students, and your community. I also want to thank you for taking the time to be with us here in Arlington and to express how appreciative I am of your support, both of this conference and of the Commission. I trust that you will find this year’s conference to be an interesting and informative experience. The ACCSC Commissioners and staff look forward to meeting you over the course of the next few days.

Welcome to the PDC.

Sincerely,

Duane KramerChair of the Commission

Student Financial Toolkit: Developing and Implementing a Financial Literacy Program for Students

Elizabeth Keifer Herron, PEAC Student Loan Assistance / CARS

Room: Studio B

As the higher education landscape continues to change in significant ways, it is critical for schools to make a dedicated effort to assist students with developing an understanding of the costs and benefits associated with attending and funding their college education. The fact is that entrance and exit counseling are not enough. This session will identify critical components of an institutional financial literacy program, key points in the student lifecycle for delivering this information, and the myriad of excellent resources that are available.

How to Design an Effective Faculty Development Plan

Juanita Gurubatham, Ph.D., ACCSCJulie Basler, Ph.D., Platt College, ACCSC Commissioner

Room: Studio C

ACCSC requires accredited institutions to demonstrate that they retain a strong and experienced faculty that is continually attentive to the needs of students, interested in strengthening the curricula, and committed to continued self-improvement. As an integral component of a successful school, faculty need a support system to ensure on-going professional development across all career stages and disciplines. The Faculty Development Plan focuses both educational administrators and faculty efforts on ensuring that the faculty have opportunities for growth and renewal in teaching and learning. This interactive session will lead participants in either developing and/or improving the school’s existing faculty development plan and will conclude with the sharing of best practices of high performing institutions regarding the initial or continued implementation of internal or external development plans.

Online / Blended Hallmarks and Student / Faculty Readiness

Eva Clare Stein, Ph.D., Laureate Education

Room: Studio D

High performing institutions are constantly seeking solutions to improve school retention, graduation, and placement rates, and often find a marketplace flush with tools, rubrics, methodologies, and seminars – each focused on moving the student outcome needle. For institutions offering distance education programs, finding the correct solution, then implementing it thoroughly may appear easy enough in the beginning; however, it can quickly lose its appeal when little measurable improvement is realized and considerable time, effort, and resources are expended.

Join Dr. Eva Stein for a dynamic and collaborative working session which will profile the contemporary learner and align learning hallmarks that support outcomes in blended and online learning environments. Participants will learn about online “Hallmarks of Quality”, what they look like in practice, and how to operationalize them to achieve engagement, rigor, and high student achievement outcomes.

Team and Leadership Development – Doing More with Less

Elizabeth Keifer Herron, PEAC Student Loan Assistance / CARS

Room: Studio B

ACCSC-accredited institutions are being forced to do more with less as postsecondary career colleges face decreased enrollments and increased regulatory oversight. Through a variety of experiential education initiatives and games, this thought-provoking session will explore critical areas to team and organizational success, including:

g Outside-of-the-box thinking; g Continuous process improvement; g Conflict resolution; g Effective communication; and g Resource utilization.

This session will be a “completely active session,” with no desks or tables. Participants will not need to run, but will move and interact with participants in a completely “out of the normal conference” kind of way.

Training to Teach: Taking Faculty from the Workplace to the Classroom

Juanita Gurubatham, Ph.D., ACCSC Julie Basler, Ph.D., Platt College, ACCSC Commissioner

Room: Studio C

ACCSC believes that by hiring and retaining qualified faculty, a school is able to strengthen the quality of its training programs. While a well-developed and implemented faculty development plan typically includes modules on continuing education, instructional methodology, and classroom management, it may not be enough for an instructor beginning his/her teaching career. This session, designed for administrators and faculty alike, will focus on basic teaching strategies that the first-time instructor may need prior to entering the classroom the first day and will identify training materials for the content/workplace expert entering the classroom for the first time.

Expanding and Enhancing Career and Student Services

Brent Molen, RDH, BS, MA, Ed. - Utah College of Dental Hygiene

Room: Studio D

Accreditation requires institutions to remain attentive to their students’ educational and other needs and to maintain adequate student services and resources that support students. The fact is, a strategic, well-managed career and student services center can make or break the future success of a school. When done well, effective student services create a feeling of legacy and accomplishment with students that enhances and reinforces the connection a student has with the school and engenders loyalty and gratitude from graduates for years to come.

This session will provide participants with an overview of concepts that will help students feel that their classmates, school instructors, administators and campus are part of their “home away from home.” Topics include:

Page 11: ACCSC PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE August/2015...SEPTEMBER 9, 2015 On behalf of my fellow Commissioners, the Executive Director, and the professional staff at ACCSC, it is my

ACCSC PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE 11

g Creating a sense of belonging for your students; g Effective retention practices; g Establishing and enhancing potential employer relations; g Increasing graduate employability and placement; and g Emphasizing communty ties to create future networking opprotunities for graduates.

Accreditation provides a solid foundation for sustained institutional success via the establishment of meaningful standards and a robust accreditation process. This session is designed to help educational leaders to think critically about how accreditation can enhance the student educational experience, instill a sense of purpose for administrators and faculty, and bolster the success of the school. During this session, participants will learn how to maximize every opportunity to demonstrate institutional success not only to their accreditor, but to all constituents. The presentation will discuss various principles and guidelines that ACCSC-accredited institutions could implement to overcome some of the common challenges they face, including:

g Acknowledging the ACCSC Standards of Accreditation as a blueprint for sustained institutional success;

g Avoiding making interpretations of a standard that go beyond and conflict with ACCSC’s guidelines and guidance;

g Ensuring that staff and faculty are accountable for understanding the Standards and the accreditation process while maintaining and providing up-to-date and accurate information and reports; and

ACCSC believes that the success of a school is directly related to the quality of its faculty. Accordingly, accrediting standards require a school to demonstrate that it engages in ongoing faculty assessment and professional development activities that are appropriate to the size and scope of the school’s educational programs, support the quality of education provided, and enhance student learning and achievement. In order to encourage and support faculty development, this session will provide participants options for instructor development with a month-by-month series of short workshops that provide basic tools and refresher tips on classroom instruction and management, both for seasoned instructors and new instructors. This session is geared for school administrators who would like to offer professional faculty development workshops throughout the year on some of the fundamental core elements of classroom instruction and classroom management.

Best Practices in Accreditation and AssessmentPamela Kraska, Daytona College, ACCSC VolunteerNancy Bradley, Daytona College, ACCSC Volunteer

Room: Studio D

The on-site evaluation experience is an essential component of an institution’s ongoing accredited status. Many institutions undertake this particular facet of their accredited status with confidence or apprehension…and sometimes both. During this interactive session, two of ACCSC’s most experienced on-site peer evaluators will provide participants with an overview of best practices deployed by a single campus institution as they prepared for an accreditation visit from an on-site evaluation team. This interactive session will offer a series of strategies and best practices for smaller schools in preparation for an on-site evaluation. Special focus will be placed on engagement of small campus leadership, staff, and faculty teams to work together to effectively present the campus during the accreditation process, beginning with the self-study and concluding with the presentation of the team room. Participants at this session should come ready to share their onsite evaluation success stories and proven visit preparation strategies.

Demonstrating successful student achievement and meeting student credentialing goals shouldn’t be a surprise, or an accident! During this session, participants will have an opportunity to learn how a high-performing adult career center increased industry credentialing rates by analyzing data, identifying strengths and challenges, involving advisory committees and instructors, motivating students, and monitoring progress.

From Crisis to Calm: Innovative Leadership for Successful Campus Crisis Response

Trends and InnovationsJill Moody, Ph.D., Atlanta School of Massage

Room: Studio F

Leadership in any organization is a key component to the success of that organization. In today’s higher education landscape, college leaders must be able to articulate the vision for their institutions, set the tone, and challenge their students to achieve greatness. Keeping the campus environment safe is paramount in supporting student success. Yet the fact remains that many campus leaders are not prepared for possible crises that may occur on campus. This session will provide current research on best practices in crisis preparation, management, and response and will identify leadership styles which are conducive to successful outcomes in crisis management. Session participants will be involved in brainstorming activities in an interactive discussion concerning leadership styles and crisis decision-making.

2015 Excellence in Community Service

Northwest Lineman College – Oroville, California

At Northwest Lineman College, it’s always considered time well spent. School officials and training specialists are always actively seeking ways in which they can introduce a “give back” approach to the student body and provide them with opportunities to improve their professional profiles. Thus, each student is to complete participation in an organized service to the community at least once throughout their term. The development and organization of the projects are handed to the class president with the intention of evolving the leadership skills necessary for a large-scale project. Participation in a community service project is not just a requirement for the students but it allows them to grow in character, develop problem-solving skills, and increase their understanding of civic responsibility. Because of their efforts and volume of involvement, the community is now seeing and identifying the gentlemen from Northwest Lineman College that are always eager to lend a helping hand as the ones who come in the NLC marked orange long sleeve. In a small town where chivalry and community service efforts were slowly starting to fade, Northwest Lineman College has made an impact in the community and has contributed to an encouraging change within Oroville. The linemen have created not only a positive image for themselves and the school but also a positive and uplifting reputation within the community.

2015 Exceptional Achievement Award

James DiLiberto, Island Drafting and Technical Institute – Amityville, New York

Island Drafting and Technical Institute (IDTI) was founded in Amityville, New York by James DiLiberto’s father Joseph DiLiberto in 1957 as the Aircraft Trade School. In 1967, IDTI became one of the first schools to earn initial accreditation from ACCSC’s predecessor, the National Association of Trade and Technical Schools (NATTS) which earned recognition from the U.S. Department of Education earlier that same year. Some 50

years later, Island Drafting and Technical Institute remains a family owned school under the steady leadership of James DiLiberto who has continued his father’s legacy of owning and operating a high-performing school that provides quality educational programs and services for the betterment of the local community. As a testament to its success, IDTI earned recognition as a School of Distinction in 2004, and as a School of Excellence in both 2009 and 2014, marking 15 years of sustained institutional performance within ACCSC’s accreditation cycle. Beyond the school’s performance, James DiLiberto has been a steadfast supporter of ACCSC, serving as a Team Leader beginning in 1982 and later joining the ACCSC Progress Committee in 2008. It is because of the ongoing support of dedicated volunteers like Jim that ACCSC is able to continue to fulfill its mission.

2015 Outstanding Graduate Award

Alyssa Linkamper – MotoRing Technical Training Institute, Seekonk, Massachusetts

Alyssa Linkamper graduated from MotoRing Technical Training Institute (MTTI) in April 2015 as a Marine Service Technician. Prior to attending MTTI, Alyssa served as an Aerospace Propulsion Journeyman (2001 – 2005) in the United States Air Force and earned an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts at the Community College of Rhode Island. Although she came into the Marine Service Technician program with less knowledge and experience in marine mechanics than her classmates, Alyssa’s enthusiasm for learning inspired their support. Physically the smallest person in the class, Alyssa learned to ask for help with heavy outboard engines. In turn, she contributed organizational and critical thinking skills--and found she could crawl into small spaces that were more difficult for her team mates to access. At the completion of her seven-month program, Alyssa earned the 2015 Award for the Highest Grade Point Average in the Marine Service Technician program, as well as the 2015 Gold Wrench Award in the Marine Service Technician program, given to the student who achieves the highest points for the combination of attendance, academic average and shop skills. Since graduation, Alyssa was hired as a full-time Marine Technician at Onset Bay Marina. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management at Bridgewater State University.
