NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON

CURRENT TRENDS IN PLANT SCIENCES [NSCTPS18]

22nd & 23rd February, 2018

The Symposium is organised to discuss the current trends in both classical and emerging areas in the field of Plant Sciences. The Symposium will provide an opportunity for all interested in Plant Sciences to learn and be inspired by the keynote addresses and lectures by eminent scientists on latest developments in different fields. Applications of research findings to human welfare, environment and conservation will be highlighted. Research scholars and students will be provided a platform to share their finding through oral/poster presentations and interact with scientific fraternity.

MADRAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGEMadras Christian College [MCC] was founded in 1837 as the General Assembly School in George Town, Madras by the Rev. John Anderson, a Missionary from the Church of Scotland. Rev. William Miller upgraded the school to a college in 1865 and renamed the institution as ‘Madras Christian College’ in 1877. The rapid expansion of the College resulted in the shifting of the college from George Town to the present 308 acre campus in Tambaram in 1937. Professor Edward Barnes and his wife Alice Mary Barnes, who lived on the campus since 1932, painstakingly shaped and nurtured the campus, by laying roads, planting avenue trees, hedges and protecting the native flora. The year 1978 was path-breaking as MCC became one of the earliest colleges to be granted the status of Autonomy. The college now has 32 departments under both Aided and Self-Financed streams offering Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Research Programmes [M.Phil. & Ph.D.]. The Halls of residence - Selaiyur, St. Thomas’s & Heber for men and Martin, Margaret & Barnes for women, contribute to the rich cosmopolitan character of the

campus life. The sprawling sports fields, as well as the cultural ambience of the college, provide impetus for the full development of students’ personality and intellectual ability. MCC is affiliated to the University of Madras, reaccredited by NAAC with ‘A’ grade [highest grade] and was awarded the status of ‘College with Potential for Excellence’. Academic excellence, spiritual vitality and social relevance have remained the guiding principles of the Institutions down the decades [www.mcc.edu.in].

DEPARTMENT OF PLANT BIOLOGY AND PLANT BIOTECHNOLOGYThe Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology [formerly Botany] is one of the oldest in the state of Tamil Nadu to teach Plant Sciences since 1937. The Department was recognized by the Department of Science & Technology in 2013 for its excellence and has been sponsored with Fund for Improvement of Science & Technology [FIST] for infrastructure in Universities & higher educational Institutions. The Department has been offering courses in all fields of Plant Sciences including Algology, Mycology, Pathology, Angiosperm Systematics, Ethnobotany, Anatomy, Embryology, Palynology, Ecology, Environmental Studies, Physiology, Biochemistry, Tissue Culture, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. The curricula and syllabi are constantly updated to meet international standards. The Department provides infrastructure and instrumentation facilities to carryout research projects leading to M.Phil. and Ph.D. The alumni of the Department occupy positions in leading colleges, universities and advanced research institutions in India and abroad [[email protected]].
