you best, as we provide solutions that work for all Canadians.

Universal design offers you the most flexibility in making difficult purchasing decisions. Rather than buying one product

for those with disabilities and another for the general public,

(and agonizing about how many of each you need), universal

design allows you to choose one solution that serves everyone.

Universal design simplifies implementation to serve all equally. Your pollworkers don’t need to make a difficult determination about

which voters may or may not have disabilities; your staff is protected

from deciding who qualifies as disabled and who does not.

Universal design gives you access to more funding sources. People Access will help you to access grants designated

for both general administration and funds earmarked for

improved disability access. You can now draw on multiple

resources to purchase products that serve every citizen.

Choosing the Right RampSlope and Size: Ramps used for persons with disabilities should ideally have a slope of at most 1:12 — or one foot of ramp length for each inch of rise (exceptions exist). Ramps for steps greater than 6” must have handrails.

Width: Ramps used for new construction, for curbs, and where situations allow should be at least 36” wide (consider the election-series ramps custom-designed for this purpose). Narrower ramps (e.g. 32”) are accept-able in certain circumstances such as within a door frame less then 36” wide.

1. Inaccessible Entrances Polling sites with heavy doors or inaccessible

door hardware can prevent people with disabilities from entering to vote. BallotCall™ makes any door accessible with an AODA compliant button that alerts election officials of a voter needing assistance.

2. Locked Alternative Entrances Accessible entrances are sometimes locked

for security reasons. When BallotCall™ is placed at the locked entrance, election officials can be alerted when someone outside needs assistance at the door.

3. Access to Alternative Entrances Accessible entrances can be far away from

the main entrance and difficult to locate. BallotCall™ at the main entrance gives voters with disabilities a means to request escort to the accessible entrance.

4. Temporary Access Sometimes the only available entrance has a step

making it inaccessible to a disabled voter. By combining BallotCall™ with a portable ramp, you can make the entrance “temporarily accessible” for a voter with disabilities.
