1. Background Peru is a country experiencing strong economic growth. Still, poverty is a reality for many
inhabitants. In the poorer areas parents, especially fathers, have to spend a lot of their time at work,
leaving little time with their children. In some cases the kids can enjoy the luxury of attending school,
but in others children need to work to ensure the family income. Many kids hence lack the care and
upbringing they deserve and need to become future responsible citizens. All in all, this does not
represent a decent childhood for many of the children in the shantytowns around Lima. Children
should be given the possibility to play and to have fun, they should be cared for and brought up with
values like respect and responsibility.
This project aims to help kids using a sport: table tennis, as a means. Table tennis is a quite unfamiliar
sport in Peru with only a few clubs in the Lima area. None of these clubs are close to the kids with
limited resources that this project targets. Playing table tennis would mean paying a cost of transport
that is too high for the children - they cannot afford to make the trip regularly to practice. This is not
only true for table tennis but also for other sports. There is, hence, a lack of possibilities for kids to
play sports and to activate themselves.
2. Purpose In that spirit, the purpose of the “Campeones de la Solidaridad”-project is to use free-of-charge table
tennis sessions for kids in the shantytowns of Lima to teach values such as respect, responsibility,
purpose and love. Through sports, we wish to help kids grow to become more responsible citizens
that can contribute to a better society. In a first phase, the goal is to offer such sessions once a week
in each of the three areas of Lima: Villa Solidaridad (already started), Rimac and Villa el Salvador.
The purpose is also to set up an ‘international partnership’ to support the development and long
term viability of the table tennis sessions started by the project during the project period 1
November 2011 – 31 December 2012.
3. Mission – the long term perspective In a long term perspective, we wish to give kids with limited resources the possibility to activate
themselves, to be healthy, to learn something new, to feel respected, to feel loved and cared for. We
want to give them an opportunity to grow as human beings and to increase their self-confidence. Our
mission is not about creating future table tennis champions but about using the sport and the
sessions to help these kids grow and give them opportunities they otherwise would not have had.
In the process, of course, we wish to spread the interest for table tennis in a city and a country where
few people know about the sport at all. When talented and interested players appear and wish to
develop further, and there will be such cases, we will help them contact existing clubs for future
development. Previous experience shows that it can be difficult for the kids to adapt to a new club
because the culture and competitiveness might be different. Therefore we will also follow their
development and help them to integrate in their new environment.
4. Activities already started, status as per 31 October 2011 Classes offered on the roof of Moisés Vega’s house on the 9th, 16th, 23rd and the 30th of October. We
now have 21 kids enrolled. Please see pictures from the first sessions in the appendix.

We have also given a short exhibition and introduction to table tennis to a number of classes at a
school, Virgen de la Merced, in the area Villa Solidaridad where we can start offering sessions as soon
as we have purchased tables.
5. Scope and Work Plan The project will be in charge of developing the already started activities to fulfill the purpose stated
above within the project period 1 November 2011 – 31 December 2012.
For that, the following activities will be carried out:
a. Work Plan
Villa Solidaridad
- Agree on terms between the project and the school.
- Purchase material (tables, nets, rackets, balls) and offer classes in the school, Virgen de la
Merced, with which we already have an established contact. We aim to accommodate on
average 25 kids per session.
Villa el Salvador and Rimac:
- Identify and contact potential locations for sessions (schools, NGOs, public spaces, etc.)
- Agree on terms for cooperation with these locations
- Purchase materials and offer sessions in these locations
General
- Set up webpage
- Establish NGO to run the activities in the long run.
- Agree on roles and involvement of the stakeholders described below to ensure a viable
activity in the long run.
b. Overall Time Schedule
c. Organisation and Stakeholders – roles, contributions and takeaways
The project organization is currently made up by 3 individuals: Johan Boström (project manager),
Moisés Vega (Responsible for Sessions) and Eddie Velarde (Responsible for Information). The project
organization is responsible for the execution of all project activities as described in this document.
Explicitly, the project organization will carry out all local activities. In the end, of course, the most
important being to instruct kids in table tennis and to help them grow as individuals.
The project is for the time being carried out with formal backing from the Zassmash table tennis club
based in Lince, Lima (formal name: “Asociación Amigos del Deporte, Club de Tenis de Mesa
Zassmash”, with Public Register Number: 11787637, and address Avenida Juan Pardo De Zela # 436 –

4th floor). An agreement has been entered between the project and Zassmash. Please note, however,
that the Campeones de la Solidaridad-project is creating a separate NGO that will take over the
activities in the long run. Because that process is time-consuming the project will be run with the
backing of Zassmash in formal matters temporarily.
A key factor in this project is to cater for regular and continuous activity in the long run. Therefore,
an ‘international partnership’ with specific roles, contributions and expected takeaways is set up by
the project. The ‘international partnership’ is defined as a network of clubs and organizations that
voluntarily choose to support this project by signing this document (see appendix 1). It is assumed
that most members of the ‘international partnership’ will be table tennis clubs. Other organizations
are of course also more than welcome to support the project.
The role of the members of the ‘international partnership’ is to support the local activities in Lima.
Mainly this includes financing purchases of materials needed to offer sessions, transportation and
other (see budget below). It may also involve other transfer of experiences/instructions/information
and other support activities as agreed with the project manager (e.g. updating the website). Each
club individually agrees with the project manager on a suitable contribution, depending on the
project needs in Lima and the preference of the club at question.
When it comes to the benefits there are at least two main takeaways from participating in the
project and the ‘international partnership’: (1) to help kids with limited opportunities to grow to
more responsible citizens, show them friendship and respect, and (2) to create contacts with other
responsible and aware clubs and organizations around the world that can be useful for exchange of
players and experiences. Other benefits can surely also be extracted down the road.
