Programmatic Review – Curriculum Handling Programmatic Reviews When students are accepted onto a programme of study, they are assigned a Catalogue Term. This

Catalogue Term is used by Banner to determine which version of a programme a student is following. By

default, the Catalogue Term for a student does not change while the student is progressing through a

programme. This is Banner Baseline design and should only be overridden for exceptional student cases.

This means that Banner is designed in a way that Students will take courses from the version of the

programme that they started on.

When these students progress to later stages of the programme, new students can start on a new version

of the programme with different courses and the original students can continue on the original courses

that were assigned to the programme they started. Banner facilitates this model although it can be used

to support programmatic reviews that also affect the original student.

There is a requirement for Banner to support programmatic reviews that have an immediate effect on all

students, these programmatic reviews overwrite the programme structure that students started on. This

kind of programmatic review has to be dealt with in the correct way in the Banner system, this is to ensure

that CAPP compliance can find an accurate record of the students’ programmes as a whole. It is also

important so that Banner holds accurate versions of a programme, these versions represent a programme

of study that is actually followed by students.

This document details the ways in which Institutes should record programmatic reviews on the Banner

system, in a way that is supported by both the CAPP system and the ACS system.

Changes to Courses on all years of a Programme with immediate effect There are cases where a programme changes so that courses on each year are replaced with new courses.

The old courses are no longer offered and therefore all students have to continue on the new courses.

Current students who are progressing through the programme will therefore no longer follow the courses

that were on the programme when they were first admitted. However, the students will already have

grades from courses that were part of the programme they were admitted on. The original version of the

programme has effectively changed in this case and therefore, the original programme must be updated

with the new programme requirements. By doing this, we have a version of the programme that a student

will actually follow.

It is the end of term 201300, i.e. Summer 2014, implementing programmatic review:

Fourth Year 201400

The cohort of students that started in 201100 has completed their third year of a four year Honours

Degree. The Honours Degree undergoes a programmatic review where courses in the first, second, third

and fourth year of the programme have changed to new courses. The student is expected to take the new

courses in fourth year. In Banner, a student can only be taking one version of a programme and their

catalogue term is 201100. They have already been graded on courses from the first, second and third year,

so the following changes need to be made in the system:

For the 201100 term, the 4th Year area of the programme should be created to contain the new 4th year

courses.

Third Year 201400

The cohort of students that started in 201200 has completed their second year of a four year Honours

Degree. The student is expected to take the new courses in third year. In Banner, a student can only be

taking one version of a programme and their catalogue term is 201200. They have already been graded

on courses from the first and second year, so the following changes need to be made in the system:

For the 201200 term, the 3rd Year area of the programme should be created to contain the new 3rd

year courses.


Second Year 201400

The cohort of students that started in 201300 has completed their first year of a four year Honours Degree.

The student is expected to take the new courses in second year. In Banner, a student can only be taking

one version of a programme and their catalogue term is 201300. They have already been graded on

courses from the first year, so the following changes need to be made in the system:

For the 201300 term, the 2nd Year area of the programme should be created to contain the new 2nd year

courses.

First Years 201400

The cohort of students starting in 201400 will be the first cohort to take the revised first year courses and

this cohort has catalogue term 201400, so the following changes need to be made in the system:

For the 201400 term, the first year area of the programme should be created to contain the new first year

courses.

In this example, the same programme goes through a midterm review for Academic Year 2016/17

(201600). At the end of 201500, again all years of the programme have courses changed. Those students

that started the programme in 201100 and 201200 will not be affected by the midterm review at the end

of 201500.

The following changes will need to be made for the midterm review:

For the 201300 term, the 4th Year area of the programme should be created to contain the new 4th year

courses.

For the 201400 term, the 3rd Year area of the programme should be created to contain the new 3rd year

courses.

For the 201500 term, the 2nd Year area of the programme should be created to contain the new 2nd year

courses.

For the 201600 term, the first year area of the programme should be created to contain the new first year

courses.

Y1, Y2, Y3 and Y4 (Version 2.0) were created as a result of the programmatic review and were only offered

in Academic Years 2014/15 and 2015/16. Cohorts 2011 to 2015 would have been affected by this but from

the 2016 Academic Year they would continue on the new version (Version 3.0)of the programme.

Y1 (Version 3.0) requires changes that affect only the 2016 and later cohorts. To achieve this, the Stage 1

Area should be created with effective term 201600. The students in the 2016 cohort will have a catalogue

term of 201600 and the system will automatically match these students (and students with later catalogue

terms) to the modifications made with effective term 201600.

will automatically match these students (and students with later catalogue terms) to the modifications

made with effective term 201100.
