ABSTRACT NATIONAL EXHIBITION
MAY 8 - JULY 11, 2020
Jack Collins – Untitled 5 (detail) – First Place Mary R. Koch Memorial Award
WELCOME to our biennial Abstract National Exhibition. We are pleased to bring together work by leading contemporary artists from across the country. This year more than most, it truly is a thrill to be able to view these works in person after our shared worldwide experience of pandemic isolation. Our identity as Mark Arts emphasizes the signature style – the mark – that all artists must develop. We challenge each of you to look for the artists’ marks as you take in the powerful work presented in the Gladys and Karl T. Wiedemann Gallery.
Abstraction is a powerful movement that spans both media and decades and continues to grow in popularity. Here in our own School of Creativity, we have a robust abstract painting program. Our students also may explore abstraction in ceramics, digital arts, enameling, mixed media, printmaking and sculpture. This exhibition will help inspire our students and art appreciators to broaden our own creativity and enrich our learning experience. We are grateful to our lead underwriter, the Fred and Mary Koch Foundation, for supporting this endeavor, which includes a visit and Artisan Academy workshop by our esteemed juror. For sales inquiries, virtual tours or viewing appointments, please contact our program director at [email protected]. Thanks for helping us inspire the artist in each of us!

Roberta Dyer is a mixed media artist, teacher and signature member of various
national art organizations. She has been juried into multiple national and international
shows and has a presence in corporate collections. Represented by the Ashton
Gallery in San Diego, she also displays regularly at The San Diego Watercolor
Society. Her current work is expressive in nature and is an exploration of the struggle
to combine figurative and abstraction in her paintings. Roberta lives in San Diego,
California, with her husband of 46 years, whom she has known since kindergarten.
At the request of her students, she has begun to post videos on YouTube as
Roberta Dyer Art.
JUROR R O B E RTA D Y E R
Being the juror for an art show is a wondrous and daunting prospect. I was particularly honored to be asked to choose the art for this very prestigious show, and once I saw the more than 300 entries, I was overwhelmed with the task of deciding which of the excellent works to include. The entries were of an extremely high quality, and each of them had a particular attraction.
When presented with a broad choice of work, I first consider three things: the initial impact, the concept and the execution. I look for what catches my eye and what attracts me because of its fresh ideas and innovation. Is it interesting to me, and does it have something to say?
Finally, it is important that the skill in executing the work is of the highest quality possible – that the composition is strong, that the values are considered, that the palette is interesting and that the use of materials is skillful.
And at the end of that process, the juror’s choices by their very nature are subjective. What one person might consider the “best” may well be very different from the next person’s opinion. In this exhibition, I have tried to present a broad spectrum of styles while still considering my criteria for excellence. I hope that I have succeeded and that you will enjoy this most beautiful and very strong display of artwork.
