Happy/Blessed New Year – 2019. Where

did the last year go? Well, a second here, a

minute there, a day here, a week there.

After Christmas Phyllis and I made a trip to Wichita to see

family there. In visiting with my step-grandson David, he said

that next year he wanted to throw a “20’s” party for the roar-

ing 20’s would be back once again. LOL (Laughing out

Loud), My what a hundred years has brought about. Not a

bad idea though. Well, that’s rushing things.

Let’s come back to this time, 2019. What will this year bring?

Opportunities – yes. Challenges – yes. Many good times –

yes. Some bad times – yes. Some ups and some downs –

yes. Many opportunities to serve God – ABSOLUTELY!

There are many ways to view time. Chronological time – our

seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks and years. This is

how we know our birthdays, our anniversaries, major histori-

cal events. Then there is Kairos time – God’s time.

Kairos time on the other hand is God’s time. Here are two

definitions of Kairos.

Kairos is timeliness, appropriateness, decorum, sym-

metry, balance—awareness of the rhetorical situation or

"the circumstances that open moments of opportunity"

Kairos (καιρός) is an Ancient Greek word meaning the (Continued on page 2)

right, critical, or opportune moment.

We might live within chronological time, yet we are called

to sense how we are called to live within God’s time –

Kairos – knowing that every moment is pregnant with the

possibility of serving God.

In Revelation 21 we hear; 5b “See, I am making all things

new.” Also he said, “Write this, for these words are trust-

worthy and true.” 6a Then he said to me, “It is done! I am

the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.

(New Revised Standard Version)

My question for all of us is; how will we strive to live within

God’s time during 2019? What will do to be open to God

being in our midst each and every day? God is, yet will we

be open to really sensing God’s presence and HIS call for

us to serve HIM?

All the challenges we face these days are opportunities to

serve God.

What will this year bring? Opportunities – yes. Challenges

– yes. Many good times – yes. Some bad times – yes.

Some ups and some downs – yes. Many opportunities to

serve God – ABSOLUTELY!

Together, let us seek to serve God by participating with

God in ushering in HIS kingdom upon earth as it is in

heaven.

Just read the following on Facebook. “Telling people that

God loves them is good theology. Show people that you

love them is what transforms the world.” Jim Palmer.

Thanks be to YOU, O God, for the gift of a new year. A

year YOU did not promise us, yet is giving to us. May we

glorify YOU throughout each second of this year. Amen.

Session Digest – December 20, 2018 Stated Meeting

Eleven of the twelve elders were present for the meeting.

Sue Wright provided devotions from a book “Jesus is the Reason

for the Season”. She closed the devotion with the opening prayer.

Pastor Dennis reported on home communions since last meeting,

and his work in the church and community.

Elders then reviewed the current membership and took action of

some who had moved away in past years.

Pastor noted that the new camera and projector have been pur-

chased and will be used in Sunday school and worship.

Thursday, January 17, 2019 Presbytery Day will be held at Com-

munity Presbyterian Church. This is a time for our new Pastoral

Presbyter and our Governance Presbyter to meet with elders, pas-

tors and others from our Church and Presbyterian Churches near

us. They will be here from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Anyone who

would like to meet and talk to them is welcome to attend. A soup

lunch will be provided and Donna Lakey will be asking for assis-

tance in this endeavor.

The financial reports for November 2018 were reviewed and ap-

proved for audit. The elders noted that we have had more income

than expenses through the first eleven months of the year. They

give thanks for faithful giving and good management of resources.

The budget committee then presented a proposed budget for

2019. Elders projected income at 157,000, with projected expens-

es of 156,450. Within the budget is a 3% raise for all staff, includ-

ing the pastor. The pastor’s increase will need congregational ap-

proval. Elders called for a congregational meeting following wor-

ship on Sunday, January 13. Details of the pastor’s call will be

shared at the congregational meeting.

Building and Grounds committee are working on enhancing our

Christmas presence outside the church. It was approved to pur-

chase lights and other decorative items following Christmas this

year.

Anna asked about improvements to the lighting in the Sunday

School room. Tex indicated he would take care of it.

Dave Wright reported that the Christmas Eve post cards have

been mailed. Dave also indicated he would like to do the same

type of thing prior to Easter.

The Thanksgiving Day community meal was a success. 175 to 200

people were served. Leftovers were shared with the Women’s Cri-

sis Center and attendees. Discussion was held on a couple of mi-

nor details.

The Bookies

The next meeting of the Bookie

Club is scheduled for Thursday,

January 3, 2019, at 10:30 AM in the

hospitality room.

Our book this month:

Our January book:

That Camden Summer by LaVyrle Spencer

In the early 1900s,

divorcee Roberta

Jewett, returning to

her childhood home

in Maine with her three daughters,

is talked about and shunned by

the community. Even Roberta's

mother is ashamed of her. Then

Roberta develops a friendship with

the man repairing her home, and

the neighbors are up in arms.

The Hate You Give

by Angie Thomas

When sixteen-year-

old Starr Carter wit-

nesses the fatal

shooting by a police

officer of her childhood best friend,

Khalil, she is afraid to speak out.

But remaining quiet and safe is diffi-

cult with rising tensions between

the police and the community.

Please join us and bring a friend!

Diabetic Focus Group

Monday, January 7, at 10 a.m. in

month. Heather Tuck, CPed,

Orthotic Lab will speak on proper

this meeting.

Benevolence Fund Report: During December we helped 15

families: 6 with rent, 3 with utilities,

2 with transportation, 2 with

household needs and 2 with pre-

scription medicine.

This month, we received 4 dona-

tions from church members and a

donation from First Community

Bank of the Ozarks. In addition,

we received a generous grant

from the Slusher Foundation.

Thanks to all for your wonderful

gifts!

If you would like to make a dona-

tion to the Benevolent Fund,

please do so by marking your

check “benevolent fund”.

If you have questions about the

fund, please contact the office or

Pastor Dennis directly. Those who

receive our assistance greatly ap-

preciate your gifts!

Pastor reported that the Christmas Cookies sale for Taney

County Ministries raised $1,700+. Several noted that the cook-

ies sold quickly.

Donna asked for thoughts on the Consecration Dinner and the

Christmas Dinner. The Consecration dinner was a success.

Several concerns were raised about the Christmas Dinner and it

was agreed to hold it at the Church next year with the same ca-

terer that handled the Consecration dinner. Suggestions were

made for entertainment and servers.

Donna reported that the Chili cookoff will be held January 20,

2019 following worship. She also verified all the trophys are at

the Church.

Meeting assessment. A good meeting, moved right along.

Could cut some of the talk.

Devotions for next meeting – Reed Click.

those in the congregation with needs.
