ABSOLUTETUBESQUALITY

Since 1914, ESW Tube Mill in Eschweiler near Aachen is considered as one of the

most important suppliers of seamless tubes and piping for several applications.

The technical expertise gained over the years, the quality of the products and a

Customer oriented strategy enables ESW to become a leader. ESW produces high

quality seamless tubes in different steel grades that are used all over the world

in the most diversified field of applications, for instance in the Oil & Gas sector,

Petrochemical sector , in the Power Generation and in the Mechanical Engineering.

ESW is part of ABS, the steelmaking company belonging to the Danieli Group.

The merging of these three companies will improve ESW’s processes and products.

MARKETS

POWER GENERATION and PETROCHEMICAL SECTOR

ESW has always produced a wide range of tubes in different grades and sizes in

order to achieve, in every condition, the best performance.

For instance, in the power generation, there are two main challenges posed by

the new environment rules: firstly the improvement of the plant efficiency and

secondly the reduction of the emissions.

The partnership with ABS gives ESW a chance to improve its range of products.

ABS’s special steel grades together with ESW’s long tradition in tubular productions

is the key to success in this particular and demanding market.

OCTG

Oil Country Tubular Goods represents a wide group of seamless rolled products

consisting of drill pipes, casing and tubing. These products are all subject to

stressful loading conditions connected to their specific application.

One of the most important OCTG mechanical characteristics is corrosion resistance

under sour service conditions, in particular for casing and tubing.

MECHANICAL and AUTOMOTIVE

ESW provides hot-rolled seamless tubes in a wide dimensional range for mechanical

general engineering applications and in particular hot-rolled tubes in carbon and

micro-alloyed for hydraulic cylinders.

In the last year the continuous research to reduce the weight of components

used in the automotive sector has improved the application of tubes: for example,

steering systems, transmission parts and stabilizers.

Steel tubes are important in the automotive industry for three main factors: first

of all, they reduce the welds, leading to time and money savings; secondly they

contribute to improving the strength of the whole structure, increasing the safety

performances of the vehicles. Thirdly, their light weight reduces the vehicle overall

weight contributing to lower CO2 emissions. Among their fields of application,

there are: steering systems, axels, transmission parts and stabilizers.

PROCESS

Eschweiler Röhrenwerke was the first plant in the world to adopt in 1982 the

innovative planetary rolling mill technology to produce seamless tubes.

Thanks to this high reduction technology, ESW has the capability to produce in

a very efficient and flexible way more than 70,000 tons per year of high-quality

seamless tube grades.

Finished tube quality is largely dependent from billet quality and, thanks to the

Top-down integration with ABS, ESW can control each phase of tube production

process since the beginning.

The seamless tubes hot rolling process consists of several stages, starting from cold

billet cutting, billet heating in rotary hearth furnace, billet piercing and descaling.

Then the pierced hollow diameter and wall thickness are reduced simultaneously

in the planetary rolling mill, the most important reduction stage.

After this phase, the final rolling of the tubes takes place in the reducing and sizing

mill where thanks to an on line measuring of OD and WT and an accurate control

of the finished tubes tolerances is carried out in order to meet the standard and

Customers’ specifications.

Afterwards, the finished tubes are cooled in air, cut to length, straightened and

sent to the finishing floor lines.

In the end of the productive process, on the basis of the customer’s requirements,

ESW provides any type of heat treatment.
