INTERVIEW TO THE PRESS ADAM SILVER AND NBA COMMISSIONER DAVID STERN

INTERVIEW TO THE PRESS ADAM SILVER AND NBA COMMISSIONER DAVID STERN

David Stern will reveal only two things about his future as NBA commissioner.

He'll be retired within five years, and he hopes Adam Silver replaces him.Stern endorsed Silver for the job on Saturday, calling the deputy com-missioner and 20-year employee of the NBA a "first-rate, top of the class executive.""I guess I would say that one of the things that a good CEO does, and I try to be a good CEO, is provide his board with a spectacular choice for its successor, and I think I've done that, and that's Adam," Stern said, with Silver sitting at a table to his right."That's ultimately, if I had the decision, if I were doing it myself, he would be the commissioner."However, Stern said the choice would be left to the owners, and he's given them no indication when they will have to make it.Stern committed to a minimum of five more years on the job after the previous collective bargaining agreement was ratified in 2005. He said he's told them nothing now, though he said the discussion would come "very soon." He repeated what he's said previously about not be-ing around to handle the next round of negotiations, which could be in 2017 if either side exercises its right to opt out of the 10-year deal."I'm not going to be here when it either is or isn't reopened in six years," he said.Silver was already the lead negotiator during the recent labor talks, leading owners through a five-month lockout to a new deal in which they saved about $280 million a year in player salary costs.Stern has leaned on his longtime assistant and the former president of NBA Entertainment more frequently in recent years, often leaving it to him to answer difficult questions. He passed the microphone to Sil-ver on a couple of occasions Saturday for questions about the league's future that Stern, 69, may not be around to answer.

He has plenty of business to complete now.

He will meet Sunday with leadership from Sacramento and the Maloof family, who own the Kings, as the sides try to beat a March 1 deadline to complete a plan to finance a new arena the city needs to keep the team."We'd like the city, on behalf of the Maloofs, to make the largest pos-sible contribution," Stern said. "The city would like the Maloofs to make the largest — both have come up with very substantial con-tributions. It's really getting there. It's just not there yet. And we're looking for ways, imaginative ways, to bridge the gap."Also Saturday:—Stern said the league is in discussions with one unnamed group, with another sitting behind, for the sale of the Hornets. He is opti-mistic a deal can get done in a week to 10 days.—Stern doesn't see expanding beyond 30 teams in North America, but neither he nor Silver would rule out overseas in the next decade.—Silver said the league is working to schedule games in London next season, after this season's games at the O2Arena had to be scrapped because of the condensed schedule.—Silver said Nike and Adidas, in the wake of reports they try to steer stars to large markets, have assured the league that the incentives they build into contracts are based on winning, not market size.—Stern said the league will return to Orlando for another All-Star game, though didn't say when. The game hadn't been here in 20 years, but Stern said there's "no better building in the world" than the new Amway Center.—Silver said the league is in discussions about playing preseason games next season in China, perhaps in Shanghai, where former Houston All-Star Yao Ming owns the Chinese Basketball Association team.

DAY 4

ALL STAR GAME PUTS FINAL TOUCHES ON HUGE WEEK FOR ORLANDO.KEVIN DURANT WINS MVPWritten by Sean SlackTwenty years ago Orlando hosted the NBA All Star game in the now closed OrlandoArena. Everyone calls it one of the most memorable games because of the MVP performance by Magic Johnson, who had recently announced he had contracted the HIV virus. Tonight, Orlando hosted another exciting, memorable, fast-paced game that saw the WEST All Stars beat the EAST All Stars by a score of 152-149. Although it did not carry the emotional ties as in 1992, there was plenty of drama towards the end and it will be remembered fondly as well. The moment the ball was tipped, the action was non-stop as a slew of fast breaks and thun-derous dunks from the world’s best basketball players captivated the audience. Initially, the WEST team led by MVP Kevin Durant (36 points) seemed to be the one team more deter-mined to win. The All Star game is not known for defense, and the WEST continued to run up and down the court. Kobe Bryant (27 Points) set the record for the most points ever as an All Star surpassing legendary Michael Jordan with 271. The WEST raced to a 20 point lead at the half and carried it midway through the 3rd quarter until Lebron James decided to take things over for the EAST. He exploded for 36 points in the game, hitting fade away 3-pointers, vicious dunks, and clamping down defensively on Kobe Bryant. The EAST had their chances at the end to possibly win the game. Trailing by two, Deron Williams at-tempted a long three pointer that clanked off the rim and was rebounded by James. James tried to make a last second pass but it was intercepted and the game ended. Orlando’s own Dwight Howard ended the night with 10 points and seven rebounds. He appeared to be in the mood to have fun….Even attempting 2 3-point shots himself and missing both horribly. The entire night was packed again with celebrities and mini con-certs as the night began with a rousing performance by Nicki Minaj. Nicki performed many of her hits, including the current single “SPACESHIP”. As she gyrated and rapped on stage, the players for both squads were announced to the approval of the sold out Amway Center. Mary J. Blige then gave a soulful rendition of the Star Spangled banner. Halftime was all about the efforts of Miami resident and Cuban born singer PITBULL. PITBULL ran through all of his current and past hits, flanked by dozens of scantily clad models. Current hits like “RAIN” with a video of marc Anthony, a fantastic surprise with Chris Brown show-ing up and singing “INTERNATIONAL LOVE.” Chris showed off some of his spectacular dance moves before NE-YO came out to join PITBULL for the final song “TONIGHT”. A great performance. Orlando clearly put its best foot forward tonight as celebrities, politicians, and ath-letes all shared the same goal….To make Orlando shine. Lil Wayne was in the house along with Birdman, Jesse Jackson, all of Orlando Government and city councils, and many more.

NBA All Star Game e ostoques finais no grande final de semana em ORLANDOKevin Durant WINS MVPPor: Sean SLACKA vinte anos atrás, Orlando hospedou o NBA All Star Games no Orlando Arena hoje desativado.

In 1992, we hosted the All Star week and it has been known as one of the “most memorable All Star weeks ever”, as quoted by TNT analyst Kenny Smith last Saturday night. Twenty years later in a brand new building, Orlando was the focal point once again, and we did not disappoint. All week, the city has received rave reviews. “Orlando has done itself proud. Lil Wayne hosted a part inside of Orlando Executive Airport. P.Diddy and others also hosted events throughout the city. During the actual All Star festivities, celebrities filled the seats of the Amway Center. In some cases, it looked like the Eastern version of the FORUM in Los Angeles. The Orlando Magic CEO Alex Martins and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer will put together a team and evaluate the total amount of funds generated during the events for this city. Many estimate it will be in the $100 million dollar range. Not bad for a city that used to be known for truck races and oranges.Orlando showed the world that we are not a small market. We host 52 million tourists a year, tons of conventions at the largest Convention center in the United States, and we can host big events like All Star with no problems. Orlando showed it is truly the “city Beautiful”, andwe are all proud to call it my home.

Celebrities hosted parties all over town during the NBA All Star weekend President Barack Obama attended events at John Mor-gan’s home and Vince Carter’s home. Michael Jordan held a pri-vate function inside of Isleworth.

We would like to extend our thanks to Sharon deLima (Paulista), Rebecca Colling, and all of the NBA office in New York city for their help making our coverage possible.
