    About Srimati Vrinda-devi

    Vrinda-vana

"The word 'vana' means forest. Vrindavana is the name given to

the forest where Srimati Vrinda-devi (Tulasi-devi), growsprofusely." (CC adhya !.l#$p.) %nother name of Tulasi isVrinda-devi (one who awards residen&e in Vrindavana). Srila

arottama dasa Thaura says krpa kori koro tare vrindavanavasi, "*ear Tulasi, please +estow your mer&y upon me, so that

    may forever reside in Vrindavana."

The Vrindavana forest is named after Vrinda-devi, who performed

penan&es here for , years. She was +orn as the daughter of/mperor 0edera, a very pious ing that attained 1oloa Vrindavana. 2is daughter

    Vrinda-devi, after san&tifying the forest +y her penan&e, also attained 1oloa. /versin&e, the forest has +een nown as Vrindavana. 3leased +y Vrinda-devi's austerities

4ord Vishnu granted a +oon to the Vrindavana forest "%ny penan&es performed here

    will 5ui&ly fru&tify and +ear e6&ellent results." 4ater Tulasi-devi, daughter of 0ing0usadhva7a, performed penan&es here and attained perfe&tion. Tulasi's se&ond nameis Vrinda.

Tulasi Is Dear To Sri Krsna

1od has spe&ifi&ally said that among plants, 2e is the Tulasi (*S &hap. ). Tulasi,

8amuna 9iver and 1ovardhana 2ill are eternally present in the spiritual world. Theyappear in this world to +enefit the living entities +y giving love of 1odhead. The

goddess of fortune is sometimes envious of the Tulasi leaves whi&h are pla&ed at the

lotus feet of the 4ord, for they remain fi6ed there and do not move, whereas4asmi7i, although stationed +y the &hest of the 4ord, sometimes has to go to satisfy

2er numerous devotees. :ut the Tulasi leaves never forsae their position, and the4ord therefore appre&iates the servi&e of Tulasi more than the servi&e of 4asmi-devi.

    The Glories of Tulasi-devi

    n the Padma Puranathere are thirty &hapters des&ri+ing Tulasi's appearan&e. 2erglorious attri+utes are re&ounted throughout the Vedi& literature. ";ust +y looing at

    Tulasi, all of one's sins are removed. ;ust +y tou&hing 2er, one's +ody +e&omespurified. %ll diseases are removed +y praying to 2er.

Ahat &an say a+out the wonderful glories of TulasiJ 2er fallen leaves, 2er rottenleaves and 2er water, even if fallen (mi6ed with 2er mudJ) is purifying. f even a

minute 5uantity of the mud whi&h has emanated from the Tulasi root has +eenpla&ed on one's head, all of one's sins are removed. %lthough Tulasi is so glorious

(and 2er leaves are so purifying), still Vaisnavas never eat Tulasi leaves without first

offering them to the Supreme 3ersonality of 1odhead, 0rsna.
