THE NEW ORLEANS JAZZ INSTITUTE (NOJI)

The New Orleans Jazz Institute is a partnership between NOJO and the University of NewOrleans (UNO) that links UNO’s strengths in Jazz education with NOJO’s professional andperformance expertise. NOJI provides year-round music education and training for children ages8-17, and serves to promote creative excellence and best practices in Jazz composition,performance, scholarship, importation, exportation and education. Through NOJI, we are able toensure that the rich musical heritage of New Orleans not only continues but advances.

THE IRVIN MAYFIELD SCHOOL OF MUSIC SUMMER PROGRAM (FORMERLY PROJECTPRODIGY)

The New Orleans Jazz Institute (NOJI) located at the University of New Orleans (UNO) is pleasedto announce the creation of The Irvin Mayfield School of Music that will be held on thecampus of UNO. Named after NOJI’s founding Director, the school will continue to providecomprehensive, affordable music education for local youth, while providing new opportunities forits students and expanding its capacity.

The first program to be hosted by the school will be its Summer Program. Formerly knownas Project Prodigy Summer Music Camp and now in its 20th year under the leadership of CampDirector and renowned music educator Joseph Saulsbury, the Summer Program will begin onMonday, June 9th and conclude on Thursday, July 3rd. The camp’s primary goal is to providemusic instruction for local students in fourth through eighth grades, to enrich their musical skillsand nourish an appreciation of the arts. It is a collaboration between NOJI, UNO, NOJO, The NewBeginnings Charter School Network and local musicians; supporting organizations have includedthe Amy Winehouse Foundation, the Young Leadership Council and Capital One.

Registration will be held June 7th from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Medard H. Nelson CharterSchool (3121 St. Bernard Avenue). Each student must audition with a camp instructor for class

School (3121 St. Bernard Avenue). Each student must audition with a camp instructor for classplacement during registration and must submit a report card and referral from a music orclassroom teacher. The one-time registration and camp fee is $75; need-based tuition waiversare available only under special circumstances.

The camp is held Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Each student mustbring his or her own instrument; beginners are encouraged to rent an instrument from alocal music store for the duration of the camp. Students are instructed by certified public schoolmusic teachers. On various days of the camp, local musicians support their education byproviding hands-on demonstrations. On July 3rd, students will show off their new music skills infront of family, friends, teachers and other supporters at the Summer Recital. SATURDAY MUSIC SCHOOL (SMS)

Spearheaded by NOJI in 2009, Saturday Music School’s mission is to support and redefinemusic education in New Orleans by offering a free, comprehensive and diverse music educationexperience to our city’s youth. SMS is designed for students, ages 8 to 17, currently enrolled in17 schools in the Greater New Orleans area. Each semester, the program offers ensemble andsmall group instruction in Jazz band, strings, piano, and voice. Each ensemble's curriculum isdeveloped to encompass history, theory and performance techniques in Jazz, Classical andWorld Music. Throughout the year, student ensembles are featured in recitals and local festivalsand events.

Each semester, NOJI commissions Jazz music based on certain themes. The music is createdby Steve Masakowski, the Coca-Cola Endowed Chair and Director of Jazz Studies; and NOJOmembers Victor Atkins, the Graduate Coordinator of the Department of Music, and Ed Petersen,Associate Chair of the Department of Music and Coordinator of Jazz Studies.

NOJI is in the development stages of a Jazz Archive honoring the Jazz Masters of New Orleans.

JAZZ CURRICULUM

Through NOJI and the Capital One-New Beginnings Charter Schools Network, NOJO is designing aJazz Curriculum that was initially taught to Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students. Thecurriculum examines the sounds of Jazz, contributors to Jazz and Jazz instruments.
