Academic

Support

When talking about studentswhocompete in a varsity sport, the termtypicallyusedis“student-athlete.”Theword“student” comesfirst, and that’sthe way the University of DetroitMercy approaches all of its athleticteammembers.Althoughperformancein competition is important, they arestudentsfirst, andathletessecond, withtheir performance in the classroomplentyimportantinTitanTerritory.

UDMhaslongprovenitscommitmentto preparing students for on-courtbattlesaswellasthoseintheclassroom.In1995,UDMopenedtheCenterforStudent-AthleteDevelopment,oneofthefirst of its kind. The center offersprograms for academic classes, drugeducation, student enhancement andworks to improve communicationskills. All 19 varsity teams, andmore

than200student-athletes,atUDMareencouraged to take full advantage oftheprogramsofferedatthecenter.Thecenteralsoheadsup theNCAALifeSkillsProgram, which focuses on thestudentinstudent-athleteandhowtodealwithissuesthatallstudent-athletestodaymust face.Through seminars, guest speakers and NCAA videos,student-athletes are made aware ofissuessuchasgamblinganddrugandalcohol abuse, and how to dealwiththeseconcerns.

“Ifeelthatthiscenterdoeseverythingtopreparestudent-athletestosucceedinlifeaftercollege,”saidSteveCorder,aUDMAssistantAthleticDirector.“Student-athletes sometimes entercollegeunawareoftheexpectationsandpressuresonthem,andthiscenterhelpsthemalleviatesomeofthatpressurebyknowingwhattoexpectandpreparingforthoseaddedresponsibilities.”

Another example of Detroit ’s

commitment to its student-athletes’academic excellence is the AthleticAcademic Coordinator’s post.Theposition was created in 1988 and, since then, UDM’s graduation rateforstudent-athleteshassteadilyrisen.Corder, no stranger to collegiateathleticsasheplayedsoccerforDetroitfrom1994-98, andhis staff carefullytrack eachTitan’s academic progresstomakesuretheyareontherightpathtowardgraduation.
