Introduction to ACAMIS Chinese ConferenceUtahloy International School Guangzhou

1-4 July 2013

I am honored to open the ACAMIS Chinese Conference in Utahloy International School Guangzhou. As the Head of School hosting this event, I am excited to see so many participants come together from ACAMIS schools near and far, to share experiences, consolidate friendships, build networks and learn more about teaching and learning Chinese. International schools are growing and developing at the same time there is a worldwide interest in learning about Chinese language and culture. You are the custodians of that knowledge and the conduit through which Chinese and foreign children learn to understand and appreciate Chinese language and culture. On behalf of Utahloy International School, I would like to express my warmest wishes for a successful conference. I would also like to give praise to the organizers who have worked diligently for the past year to plan every detail of the conference.

I wish the ACAMIS Chinese Conference great success!

Utahloy International School Guangzhou

Established in 1997, Utahloy International School Guangzhou was one of the first International Schools in China. The school opened with a small number of kindergarten students and grew into a K-12 school with over 900 students representing more than 50 nationalities in just over a decade. The school is authorized to deliver the three International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes. The Middle Years Programme (MYP) was authorized in 2002. The Diploma Programme (DP) was authorized in 2004. The Primary Years Programme (PYP) was authorized in 2008. The school is accredited with the Council of International Schools (CIS) and Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

Academic excellence is achieved through high expectations, strong motivation, a challenging IB curriculum, close monitoring and excellent teaching. Students who graduate from Utahloy gain places in renowned universities around the world, mostly in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Korea, Japan and Hong Kong.

Language diversity at Utahloy is embraced and celebrated. Students develop a strong sense of self-identity and positive self-esteem. Utahloy has earned an international reputation for its Mother Tongue programme. The school offers Chinese, Korean, Japanese, French, German, Spanish and Italian to students in the Primary and Secondary sections. In addition five languages are taught as Language B options in Years 7-10. Utahloy students thrive in an international, multilingual learning environment.

Since its foundation, Utahloy has been known as a school characterised by warm relationships between teachers, students and parents. The school places great importance on providing a caring and supportive environment for teaching and learning. A range of pastoral care programmes provide support for our student community. All members of the UIS community are expected to positively contribute to the learning environment by respecting, caring for and supporting each other and the physical environment.

July 1 & July 22013 ACAMIS Chinese Conference - Keynotes & Workshops

Opening Keynote Speech & Workshops - Curriculum Design By Juan Carlos Morales

Opening keynote Speech: “Going Beyond the Standards: The New C’s of 21st Century Learning”

As world language and culture teachers, we have grown increasingly comfortable with the 5 C’

s of language learning, but as we look toward the future and welcome an ever-changing student

population into our classrooms, we have to ask ourselves in what positive ways language learning

and assessment will change. In this presentation, we will discuss the new C’s for the future of

learning, those which will create the standard for future generations.

Session one: “Learning How to Ask: Essential Questions to Develop Student Proficiency”

In order to improve student learning, teachers must begin to ask themselves, "What do I ask my

students? Why do I ask them the questions I ask?" In this session, we will explore the central role

of essential questions: what they are and are not, and what their roles are in designing instruction.

Additionally, we will look at Bloom's Taxonomy to make sure that we are allowing students the

opportunity to think critically and to answer questions that challenge their thinking beyond who,

what, where and when.

Session two: “The Interpretive Mode: Integrating Skills”

Using audio, audiovisual, and written and print materials (in English), we will discuss best practices

in designing instruction with authentic materials. First, we will discuss how these materials can be

used in a unit of instruction, and then we will discuss what the best ways are to engage students in

working with texts (both audio and print) that allow them a certain level of autonomy.

Session three: “The Interpersonal Mode: Finding New Connections”

How do we best engage our students in talking to each other in a new language? In this session,

we will discuss ideas for creating opportunities for students to engage in meaningful exchanges in

which they negotiate information, ask questions, ask for more information, etc. Ideas will be shared

for effective communication tasks for the classroom.

Session four: “The Presentational Mode: Students as Creators, Teachers as Guides”

Are you tired of giving paper and pencil tests, or do you think that presentations in class take up too

much time? In this session, we will explore Web 2.0 tools for the presentational mode as a means of

having students demonstrate their understanding and their learning using technology. Participants

will receive step by step guidelines to make their students (and themselves) comfortable with

creating publishable products for an audience beyond the classroom.

Session five: “Creating Community for Your Language Program”

The teacher as a salesperson is a necessary need in today's world language teaching world. In

this session, we will explore ways in which teachers can "sell" their programs to their students,

administration, and colleagues. We will discuss specific strategies to create a "buzz" around your

program and make your language classroom the place students want to be.

* All the sessions are delivered in English.

Keynote Speech: “Enrich Chinese Teaching and Learning through Thinking Education”

“The World is Flat.” Traditional pedagogies of Chinese teaching no longer satisfy the needs of

modern learners who are globally aware and adaptable. They have aimed to apply and to transfer

their acquired Chinese skills and knowledge into the dynamic contexts of the world. How can we

Chinese educators retool our teaching by making the assessment process fundamentally innovative

and appropriate for students’ individual aptitude?

Session one: “Effective Differentiation Supported by Creative Strategies”

It’s inevitable that Chinese teachers at international schools have been facing the never-ending

challenges resulting from students’ diversified learning backgrounds. Some creative strategies

adapted from modern thinking education are worthy of consideration and may come of help while

providing differentiated assessments for students in need.

Session two: “Student-centered Assessment”

Why assessments deliberately designed by teachers seldom appreciated by students? How can we

effectively help students take the ownership of learning by developing their self-assessment skills?

How can we involve students in the assessment process to improve their learning outcome? There’

re strategies for teachers to consider which will help make assessments more enjoyable for students

and teachers alike.

Session three: “Advance Learning through Assessment Feedback”

Why modern educators no longer value feedbacks like “Well done!” or “You have to work harder!”

or even consider them de-motivating for students? Educational research and literature suggested

that assessments followed by constructive and meaningful feedbacks from teachers will help

accelerate students learning. What teachers can do to help further benefit students from assessments

through effective feedback?

Session four: “Questioning as an Effective Strategy for Formative Assessment”

The research on second language acquisition demonstrated that teachers elicitation techniques have

not only played an indispensible role on classroom interaction but have also served as an effective

strategy while assessing students understanding and language performance in an active approach,

which may lead to efficient adjustment on the pedagogies employed the teachers and may provide

students productive feedback in a timely manner. What we should know and how we can do to

develop such skills?

Session five: “What matters more? Successful Learning or Academic Grades? The Roles of

assessment and differentiation in the Pathway of Inquiry – from student motivation to reflection of

learning”

Assessment and differentiation never simply serve as tools to measure students’ achievement or to

cater for the needs of class management. Both play indispensible roles in the pathway of inquiry.

Can we language instructors effectively employ assessment and differentiation in our curriculum

planning and lesson delivery to achieve the best learning outcome for students?

* All the sessions are delivered in Chinese
