Fundamental Concepts Critical to Understanding MOC
It is useful to think of MOC as two distinct processes• Earning points toward certification• Earning points toward “Meeting MOC Requirements”
These two process have their own time lines• For most diplomates these time lines are not
synchronized
The two processes and asynchronous time lines causes confusion
4
Certification Expires in 2014-2017Maintaining the Certificate
Must earn a total of 100 MOC points at end of current certificate date (10 years)At least 20 in Medical Knowledge At least 20 in Practice Assessment 60 in either area Pass exam every 10 years
5
2014-2017 CohortMeeting MOC Requirements
Starting January 1, 2014• Earn some MOC points every 2 years (first milestone by
December 31, 2015)• Earn 100 MOC points every 5 years (first milestone by end
of December 31, 2018)• Complete a “patient voice activity” every 5 years• Complete an approved patient safety module every 5
years
100 Points count for all certificates and do not have to be specialty specificPass exam every 10 years
6
2014-2017 CohortImportant Notes
• Points earned before 1/1/14 will count toward maintaining an existing certificate(s)
• Points earned before 1/1/14 will not count toward “Meeting MOC Requirements”
• Points earned after 1/1/14 will count for both maintaining an existing certificate(s) and “Meeting MOC Requirements”
7
2018 and Beyond CohortMeeting MOC Requirements
Earn some MOC points every 2 yearsEarn 100 MOC points every 5 years
• At least 20 in Medical Knowledge • At least 20 in Practice Assessment • 60 in either area

2018 and Beyond CohortImportant Note
MOC points earned before 2014 will not count toward certification or toward “Meeting MOC Requirements”
9
Patient Safety Requirement
• Certain Medical Knowledge and Practice Assessment activities also qualify for Patient Safety
• Only need 1 “activity” in this category every 5 years
10
Patient Voice Requirement
• There will be at least 4 different pathways to meet this requirement to be rolled out before the 2018 deadline.
• These pathways will support retroactive credit• An approved activity completed between 2014-2018
will meet the requirement. • ABIM to discuss
• Modifying or eliminating patient related requirements clinically inactive physicians
11
Time Unlimited Certificate Cohort
• ABIM will honor all certifications already issued • To be listed as “Meeting MOC Requirements”
enroll in MOC program • Status can be changed at any time • Meet 2 and 5 year MOC point milestones• Complete patient safety and patient voice
requirement by milestone dates• Pass the exam in 10 years
12
Time Unlimited Cohort and the Exam
Pass the MOC exam by end of 2023 Not passing the MOC exam has no bearing on certification status, only “Meeting MOC Requirements” statusNot completing every component of the MOC program requirements results in "Certified, Not Meeting MOC Requirements” listing on ABIM web site
