Brief Description of Undergraduate Courses Taught: (Course Title – Code: Description)
1 Introduction to Comprehensive Health Care I -‐ MDFM 204 (0407-‐204):
This is a two credit hours course for the 2nd year medical students. It is shared with other faculty members. The aim of this course is to enable medical students to discuss and identify the importance of family & community medicine, basic concepts & epidemiology of health & disease, aspects of health planning & how the environment affect health of family & community. It includes: dimensions of health, disease & its natural history, levels of prevention, definition & scope of epidemiology, quality of life, medical sociology, health planning, primary health care, community participation, environment & health.
2 Basic Clinical Skills -‐ MDIN 406 (0431-‐406): This is a three credit hours course for the 4th year medical students. The aim of the course is to introduce medical students to basic clinical skills. These essential basic clinical skills include ability to communicate with patients, obtain proper patients' history, undertake comprehensive physical and mental state examination, interpretation of findings, and to understand and perform certain basic technical procedures. It also provides hands-‐on training and practice under supervision to prepare medical students before their first contact with patients in clinics or hospital settings.
3 Biomedical Ethics In Islam -‐ MDFM 405 (0407-‐405): This is a 1 credit hour course for the 4th year medical students. It is shared with other faculty members. The aim of this course is to introduce medical students to the advanced facts, concepts and scientific principles of biomedical ethics from an Islamic point of view, necessary for the practice of medicine.
4 Primary Health Care -‐ MDFM 409: This is a 4 credit hours course for the 4th year medical students. It is shared with other faculty members. The aim of this course is to enable medical students to understand the fundamental concepts of family & community medicine, acquire the basic knowledge, attitude & skills of family & community medicine & acquire the skills of community work field & research methods. It includes: family medicine concepts, health education, evidence-‐base medicine, control of communicable diseases, mother & child health, occupational medicine, & epidemiology.
5 Field Course -‐ MDFM 410: This is a 2 credit hours course for the 4th year medical students. It is shared with other faculty members. The aim of this course is to enable medical students to understand the fundamental of applied medical research as related to the health needs in Saudi Arabia, and to provide an opportunity to Medical Students to apply their Knowledge and skills as well as develop professional attitudes for the effective delivery of primary health care. .
6 Integrated health sciences This is a six credit hours course for the 4th year medical students (18 weeks yearly). It is shared with other faculty members. It has 12 modules. The aim of this course is to encourage students to be independent self-‐learners and to acquire the ability of critical thinking in solving clinical problems. The PBL-‐approach in this course involves student-‐centered self-‐learning activity, in which small groups of students study selected health problems with facilitation and guidance of a tutor.
7 Introduction to Learning Skills and Computers – Parallel Program This is a two credit hours course for the 1st year medical students. This course is composed of two parts: 1. Learning Skills (8 Weeks) and 2. Computer: (8 Weeks). Learning Skills include: Effective Planning , Time Management, Reading Effectively, Learning Blockages, Notes Taking, Writing Reports & Essays, Researching & Conducting a Project, Understanding Course Material, Revising, Preparing for Exams, Personal Development Plan, Teamwork, Learning To Learn, Study skills, Learning styles, Active and cooperative learning, Concept mapping technique, Group study or Peer teaching, Presentation Skills, Learning at Bedside and How to prepare for examinations. Computer includes :Word processing, PowerPoint, Excel, PDA, E-‐Learning, WebCT, Internet, University Website, CAL, and How to Search.
8 FAMILY MEDICINE CLERKSHIP – Parallel Program
This is a six credit hours course for the 5th year medical students (18 weeks yearly). The aim family medicine clerkship course is to equip medical students with the basic concepts and principles of Family Practice. The clerkship will initiate, foster, and develop the knowledge base, skills and attitudes that are essential to a medical specialty that integrates comprehensive health care for the individual, family and community. It includes (but not restricted to) exposure to: Common health problems encountered in family medicine: Hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus, Acute Upper Respiratory Infection, Skin Lesions, Lumps, Bumps, Depression, Allergic Rhinitis, Hyperlipidemia, Obesity, Anxiety, Abdominal Pain, Headache, Sprains & Strains, Asthma, Osteoarthritis, Otitis Media, Congestive Heart Failure, Back Sprains & Strains, Urinary Tract Infection, and Chest Pain (Non cardiac and related symptoms). My contribution: I am the course coordinator and participating in teaching of many theoretical and clinical sessions as well as participating in students’ evaluation and assessment.
9 Foundation Course – Parallel Program This is a 6 credit hours course for the 2nd year medical students. The aim of the course is to introduce medical students to the terms and concepts of the main medical subjects and to bridge the gap between phase 1 & phase 2 to have more experience in problem-‐based learning approach.
10 Applied Primary Health Care Course – Parallel Program This is a 4 credit hours course for the 4th year medical students x 4 weeks. The course is conducted in primary health care centers for training students on community diagnosis and planning for preventive as well as curative measures.
11 Clinical Skills Course – Parallel Program This is a 4 credit hours course for the 4th year medical students -‐ parallel program. The aim of the course is to introduce medical students to basic clinical skills. These essential basic clinical skills include ability to obtain patients' history, undertake comprehensive physical and mental state examination, interpretation of findings, and to understand and perform certain basic technical procedures. It also provides hands-‐on training and practice under supervision to prepare medical students before their first contact with patients in clinics or hospital settings.
12 Epidemiology (MSSH 216): This is a two credit hours course for the 2nd environmental health students. The aim of this course is to enable medical students to explain the different definitions used in epidemiology, and appreciate the role of epidemiology in diseases causation, prevention and control. Describe the natural history of diseases and apply the different levels of prevention. State the most common diseases cycle and apply epidemiological knowledge and skills in investigation and control of an epidemic. Discuss the concepts and principles underlying screening and describe the characteristics of a screening test. My contribution: Participating in teaching 2 one-‐hour sessions yearly as well as participating in students’ assessment.
13 Environmental Final Project (MSSH 425): This is a six credit hours course for the 4nd environmental health students. Individual projects involving library, laboratory, and field study of a specific environmental health problem. Individual research on a specific topic in environmental health upon which specific conclusions, judgments, or evaluation can be made or upon which facts can be presented. My contribution: Participating in teaching 3 hour sessions as well as participating the course design and evaluation. Supervising a student final project about school indoor Environment.
