FROM THE EDITOR

Enfield Scouts have certainly been getting out and about this autumn. Enfield Scouting was very much in the public eye at the Enfield Town Show in the Town Park in September. Then in October the residents of the north Enfield must have thought the “Parade of Light” had come early this year when on a Friday evening 85 brightly-lit Cubs plus their Leaders walked from Gordon Road to Forty Hill and through Whitwebbs. At the same time the 12th Enfield Scouts were on a night cycle ride from Stratton Avenue in Whietwebbs with well-lit bicycles. So the woods at the back of Clay Hill were lit up with a multitude of lights as the routes of the two activities crossed each other. This is all good publicity for the Scout movement in Enfield, showing the public how active we are! Hopefully seeing youngsters enjoying these exciting activities will encourage others to join us. The next edition of “Bangers and Mash” will be published at the end of January 2017. Please let me have your contributions by Sunday 15th January 2017. I’m happy to receive contributions at any time- please continue letting me have news and photos of events as they happen. It makes my job much easier!

FROM THE

DISTRICT COMMISSIONER As this is the last “Bangers and Mash” before Christmas let me be the first to wish you all the compliments of the season. I feel sure that your meetings leading up to Christmas will include a party or two. Enjoy! In September we again took a stand at the Enfield Town Show. Over the two days many of our friends stopped by to say “hello”, and we pointed a few new recruits in the right direction. I really appreciated the help of those who gave up their time to man the stand with me, thank you. Recently we ran our second Young Leader Training Weekend and I am told that it was a great event with all the Young Leaders present taking part enthusiastically. I hope that they will go out into our District and put into practice what they have learnt with your help and guidance. If you don't have any Young Leaders on your team then you really are missing out, they are great! Many thanks to Mike, Corinne and their team for running this. Now that the evenings are getting darker it's a great time to do exciting things in the dark. Please get your young people out doing some Scouting in the great outdoors, they will love it. Best wishes.

BEAVER HEAFIELD FUN DAY On Saturday 24th September the Beavers went to Gilwell Scout Park to take part in their annual Heafield Trophy Fun Day. Seven Colonies entered this year, joining in lots of different races:- running, 3-legged race, wheelbarrow race, and many more including the revival of the dressing-up relay which was hilarious. Many thanks to the Leaders who ran the day and to Bette who had the tedious job of adding up the scores. Thanks also to Graham Bray, from the Heafield Committee, for coming along to present the cheque. The results were:- 1st place – 20th Enfield, 2nd Place – 12th Enfield, 3rd Place – 18th Edmonton.

18TH EDMONTON BEAVERS MEET A PARAMEDIC

The 18th Edmonton Beavers have started their “My World” badge, and we were very fortunate to have a paramedic join us for the evening to tell the children all about his job.

The children had a fantastic time listening to their friends’ heartbeats, practising their bandaging skills, and seeing what is in the bags that the paramedics carry around with them. The evening was full of fun and laughter and our Beavers all took home a bandage to practice with and a sticker for participating fully in the evening.

CUBS’ WATER ACTIVITIES IN DOCKLANDS

On Sunday 4th September, 24 Cubs From the 5th and 23rd Enfield Packs were among around 90 Cubs from all over Greater London North who had the opportunity to visit the Dockland Scout Project and try out some water activities

The Dockland Scout Project is an entirely Scout-run organisation on the Isle of Dogs in East London, and is a part of the Greater London North County. The Project is run by a ‘Crew’ of volunteers from all branches of Scouting, and their specialist Explorer Scout Unit. The Project offers many different types of water sports, including sailing, rowing, kayaking and canoeing.

The Cubs were able to try sailing, kayaking, canoeing and rowing, spending one hour on each activity; their two favourite activities from the day were sailing and kayaking - two activities where they managed to get very wet! There was no shortage of Cubs falling off their boats and into the water throughout the day! One of the most popular games of the day was a version of “Cat and Mouse” using kayaks, where the Cubs had to form of tight line with their kayaks and then chase each other by running across the tops of each other’s kayaks; there were very few Cubs who didn’t fall in during this! We finished off our great day with each Cub (and some Leaders!) jumping off the dock into the water - lots of very wet but very happy Cubs. The Cubs loved their day of water sports, for many of them it was their first time doing these activities, a big thank you to the crew at the Dockland Scout Project for all their hard work and giving us the opportunity to come and try out some new sports and earn some new badges.

“LARK IN THE DARK”

As part of their Centenary Celebrations about 85 Cubs assembled at the 4th Enfield Headquarters in Gordon Road on Friday evening 14th October. They had been told to bring sleeping bags and toothbrushes, plus torches, but judging by the size of some of the bags and cases you would have thought they were going on a fortnight’s holiday! As well as torches many of the Cubs (and Leaders!) were wearing colourful clothes, hi-vis tabards and battery-operated lights – these were supplemented by a variety of glow-sticks provided by the District.

24th Edmonton Pack

29th Enfield Pack It made an amazingly bright and colourful sight as all the Cubs and Leaders set off along Baker Street heading for Forty Hill. It attracted cheerful waves and hoots on their horns from passing motorists – good publicity for Scouting in action! From Forty Hill the route took the Cubs along the path through the woods in Gough Park to Whitewebbs – the Cubs had to look out for numbers on fluorescent stars and some of the trees and logs had been decorated with glowing stars, moons and other shapes.

Everyone then headed for the lake in Whitwebbs and then back past the back of Whitewebbs House and down the path across the golf course, before returning through the woods to finish up at Forty Hall where the house was splendidly floodlit. The whole route was about 5 miles and took the Cubs a

couple of hours. Back at the 4th Enfield HQ hot chocolate and snacks were waiting for supper before the Cubs got into their sleeping bags for a sleep-over in the main hall (with the Leaders in the upstairs rooms). The Cubs also enjoyed a “Midnight Feast” and then the event finished with a continental breakfast on the Saturday morning. A huge “thank you” to all the Leaders and Young Leaders who helped to organise the event – escorting the Cubs along the route, providing the refreshments and supervising the sleep-over. Thanks also to the 4th Enfield for the use of their Headquarters and to the 20th Enfield Scouts for helping to set out the route.

10TH EDMONTON AT THE ESSEX JAMBOREE

The 10th Edmonton Scout Troop were at the Essex International Jamboree, in the summer camping with 10,000 other participants from around the world in the week-long event which takes place every four years at Boyton Cross near Chelmsford.

The Scouts took part in over 100 different activities, ranging from abseiling to zorbing, climbing to water challenges such as canoeing and raft-building, and a media zone called ‘Express Yourself’, with a broadcast studio in which they could report on the day’s event. Edmonton Scouts had an amazing time meeting up with Scouts from Ireland, Poland and America.

CHILTERN 20

On Saturday 15th October, a team from the 10th Edmonton Scout Troop took part in this year’s Chiltern 20 hiking competition. They left their hut on the Great Cambridge Road at 04:45 for a 07:30 start as team number one.

The 10th Edmonton team on the hike The three girl Scouts: Libby, Sky and Evie showed guts, grit and determination to complete the 20 kilometre course, in the fastest time, hoping to beat their personal best

EXPLORERS IN DOWNING STREET Visiting London to see 10 Downing Street and the ceremony of the keys was a once in a lifetime brilliant experience. To physically stand outside the Prime Minister’s house rather than seeing it on TV was breath-taking. To know you were standing half a foot away from the door of one of the most important people in Britain evoked a spectrum of emotions. Being a politically interested and motivated person, I could easily label it as one of my best moments in Scouting. With us was a friendly policeman who was able to answer a whole host of questions; he also introduced us to Larry the cat, the Downing Street mouse catcher. After we had all had our pictures taken with the door we moved on to the Tower of London. The ceremony of the keys is a tradition of the tower that has been repeated daily since the 14th century, the chief yeoman and his parade lock all the main doors of the tower from the outside in. It is a ceremony I felt privileged to watch. We learnt many interesting things that day from both Downing Street and the Tower of London, I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.

12TH ENFIELD HARVEST FESTIVAL CHURCH PARADE

At the beginning of October the 12th Enfield Beavers, Cubs and Scouts celebrated harvest festival at their church parade at St Luke’s church in Browning Road. As well as parading their flags as usual, the youngsters also brought harvest gifts of food which went to the local food bank.

SCOUTING WEKENDER The Big ‘Un is dead, long live the Scouting Weekender! So the Big ‘Un replacement – the Scouting Weekender, was just as awesome, just as much fun and just as exciting as the Big ‘Uns ever were. The only difference really was that we knew where we were going before the day and we partly organised it ourselves (we had been allocated jobs to do for the weekend). We left Enfield in two mini-buses and headed off to Devon, arriving in the pouring rain at the tiny, but beautiful, village of Morthoe, just north of Woolacombe. A HUGE house had been hired for the weekend and we all managed to find somewhere to sleep – either in a bed, on a sofa or on a camp bed. Saturday morning saw the sun shining, and after a beautifully cooked breakfast (one of the jobs that had been allocated), packed lunches were made (another shared job), and we all jumped in the mini-buses and headed to the beach for a day of fun. The guys from the 10th Edmonton had organised some activities such as volleyball, boule, twister, sand-castle

competition and general lazing around. This was enjoyed by many, while others donned wet-suits (and some not!) and braved the waves of Woolacombe. A good selection of body boards had been brought with us and we also hired a couple of surf boards. The surf was great and we all had a thoroughly good day. Advertising Scouting with a sand castle!

We returned to the house and very quickly got changed and headed out again in the mini-buses to Bideford to enjoy their annual carnival and massed pipe bands display. We arrived just in time to see the carnival leading off, and as we were all wearing our Scouting Weekender t-shirts and Scout scarves, we were very tempted to jump on the end of the carnival and join in – who would have stopped us?! After watching the parade wind its way around the town we sat on the river side eating a delicious fish and chip supper. Next, the massed pipe bands formed up in the road and treated us to a fine display of piping and drumming – an amazing spectacle. Finally, we watched the firework display at the end of the carnival (not a patch on ours of course) and headed back to the house. Was the evening over? Not a chance. We then had a hilarious evening of wine tasting Bingo (organised by us from the 12th). With Bingo cards and wine scoring sheets in hand we settled down for a full house – each one being greeted with a tiny plastic cup of wine to taste, and each given a rating out of ten. The wine favoured by most was actually bought from Aldi for the princely sum of £3.49!! After another HUGE breakfast on Sunday morning, some of us headed back to the beach, not wishing to miss out on the chance of another surf before heading back to Enfield.

Jas hasn’t quite got the idea of surfing yet

Some played crazy golf and mooched about the shops and coffee houses, while others took part in Janette’s baking master class back at the house and made some delicious savoury and sweet muffins. Fun and games in the garden took place in the afternoon – space hopper relay, plank walking and Velcro hat/ball games. This was all great fun, and while we tidied up the house, a BBQ was prepared for us all by Varley and the boys – and OMG, they know how to cook on a BBQ. Before heading home we had a quick de-brief on the lawn and it was decided that the new format of the weekend – a fun activity weekend for Enfield leaders past and present, sharing the organisation - was a real hit. It was a fantastic opportunity to get away with old friends and to meet some new friends without having the usual worry of looking after children. I’d like to say it was a great opportunity for me to let my hair down...but clearly I can’t. So suffice to say, it was a great opportunity to have a fantastic weekend away with some really lovely people and get in a bit of cheeky surfing before the weather turns cold and nasty again. Thanks to EVERYONE who made the weekend what it was – we were all responsible for a great success. I can’t wait for next year.

FROM THE ARCHIVES

1950s SCOUT UNIFORM AND BADGES

Hertfordshire Museum Service have some old Scout badges in their collection and we were recently asked to help identify some of them. Most of them we were able to with the aid of the old Scouting books in our own archives.

The Scout Uniform with badges from the 1958 edition of a booklet entitled “The Scout’s Book of Rules” which was first published in 1949.

The “Bookman” proficiency badge

The Hertfordshire County Badge

Another proficiency badge – believed to be the “Handyman”, although by 1958 the symbol had changed from a “brace & bit” drill to crossed hammer and paint brush.

One badge we have NOT been able to identify is this one, although it has been suggested that “NS”might refer to National Service

especially as the crown would suggest something to do with national government or the armed services. If any of our more senior readers can positively identify this badge, the editor would be glad to know
