AAPIHRG-S: Info session9/10/157:00- 8:00 PM
Icebreaker! Get a post-it from one of the officers and then stick
it on your forehead. Don’t look at what’s written on it!
Walk around the room, introduce yourself to others, and then ask “yes or no” questions about what is written on your post-it to get clues.

Our History
Began in 2008 as a DeCal with the support of students, Professor Harvey Dong, and Dr. Marilyn Wong
Focused on providing a space to educate students on vital contemporary issues in the AAPI community health realm
Also allowed students to engage in research on a topic of their choosing and to facilitate the DeCal in the Spring
Many of our alumni have since gone onto graduate/ professional schools, in places like UC Berkeley, UCSF, UCLA or Harvard. Some are currently working in different community health organizations such as NEMS, LifeLong and Alameda Health Consortium
Our Mission The purpose is to encourage students to engage in AAPI community health in the
following five areas:
(1) Diversity of the AAPI communities
(2) Historical perspective
(3) Epidemiological perspective
(4) Medical perspective
(5) Social change
More specifically, we are open to all students interested in community health, and hope to foster a desire to serve the community through providing training for
volunteer work as well as opportunities for leadership development, and networking.

How to Get Involved with AAPIHRG-S
Bone Marrow/Blood Stem Cell Donor Reg. Project
PURPOSE: To increase the availability of potential stem cells donors for patients with life threatening diseases curable by a stem cell transplant through outreaching and conducting registration drives.
RATIONALE: Every year, more than 12,000 patients in the U.S. are diagnosed with life-threatening diseases such as leukemia or lymphoma for which a marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant from an unrelated may be their best or only hope of a cure. About 70% of patients in need of a transplant do not have a matching donor in their family. They depend on the Be The Match Registry to find an unrelated donor or umbilical cord blood unit. Just 7.2% of adult donors are Asians/Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (67% registered donors are White). At UCB, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders account for more than 40% of undergraduates; however, many of them are uninformed about the need for bone marrow donors. The project aims to inform students on campus about the need of bone marrow and to provide education on the donation process to help the students make their best decision. Be a DONOR, Save a LIFE.

Your Role
Become a donor!
Volunteer with us! Outreach to potential donors and help them with the registration
process
Complete 1.5 hr training instructed by a representative from Asian American Donor Program. The training is scheduled on Sept22 from 7-8:30pm (location TBA)
Attend at least 3 donor drives (10+ hours per semester)
Postpartum Nutrition Folklore Project
PURPOSE: To collect and preserve information on traditional soup and dishes used by various AAPI cultures for the nourishment of women during the month immediate after the birth of a child.
RATIONALE: Women, through the ages, have to nourish themselves back to health after the birthing process as well as to ensure sufficient breast milk for the newborn. The wisdom of these women is concentrated in the traditional soup and dishes prepared for the postpartum period. However, before these soup and dishes can be analyzed for their nutritional content to benefit the mothers of today, much of the traditional knowledge is being lost as many AAPI cultures are being “Westernized” in one generation. There is a fight against time to preserve this traditional knowledge.
Your Role
Collect 1 or 2 recipes and their purported benefits from your relative or informant
As a researcher, you will be responsible for evaluating the nutritional contents of your recipes.
Attend monthly workshops
Help create the monograph
If interested, help with cooking the recipes, and/or take photos of the food to put into the monograph.
Hosts: Asian American Pacific Islander Health Research Group(AAPIHRG), Black Students in Health Association (BSHA), the Chicanos/Latinos in Health Education (CHE), and the Pilipino Association for Health Careers (PAHC)
Goal: to educate about the health disparities that affect our communities and find ways to decrease these disparities by encouraging and inspiring both high school and undergraduate students to continue to strive toward higher education and ultimately careers in health
