DR. DAN EVANS, AAEP PRESIDENT, DIES Dan R. Evans, DVM, 38th Presi- dent of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, died February 27, due to complications following heart by- pass surgery in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dr. Evans was in I.as Vegas attending the Western States Veterinary Conference. Dr. Evans had been a partner in Drs. Evans& Namples' Equine Medicine and Surgery Practice in Escondido, Califor- nia since 1961. He is survived by his wife, Sue Evans and six children, Dan W. Evans, Laurel Evans-Smith, Les Heath, Kathy Heath, Vernon Heath and Jennifer Villasenor. Dr. Evans was installed as the 38th President of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) during its Annual Convention in Orlando, Florida held in December, 1992. At the conven- tion, Dr. Evans proposed an aggressive agenda that addressed several critical is- sues including continuing education, medication issues, animal welfare and ethics legislative activities. Dr. Evans was extensively involved in several veterinary organizations. He had been an AAEP member since 1965, serving on the Board of Directors from 1981-1986. He was elected Director-at- Large in 1990, Vice President in 1991, and President Elect in 1992. He orga- nized the AAEP's scientific program for the 1992 convention. Additionally, he served as President of both the California Veterinary Medical Association and the San Diego County Veterinary Medical Association.He was active in the Ameri- can Veterinary Medical Association and was a frequent consultant to the San Diego Zoo. Dr. Evans was reco~ized for his contributions throughout his career. Recognitions include the Award of Spe- cial Recognition by the San Diego County Veterinary Medical Association and the alumni Achievement Award conferred by faculty of the School of Veterinary Medicine at University of California, Davis. In 1988, Dr. Evans was installed as a Fellow of the Zoological Society of San Diego. He served on the Animal Advisory Committee to San Diego County, as an officer and board member of the San Diego County Humane Soci- ety, as a chairman of the Escondido Ro- tary Club, and on the Board of Directors of the Eseondido ChamberofCommeree. "As practitioners, an association, and an industry, we face many remarkable challenges heading into the 21st cen- tury," Dr. Evans wrote in the December 1, 1992 issue of AAEP's Orlando Con- vention Special newsletter. "With enthu- siasm, I welcomethe opportunity to serve our membership as president. My enthu- president, I will focus on these." Those challenges and a well-defined agenda have been turned over to A. Gary Lavin, VMD, President-Elect, and the Executive Committee. Dr. Lavin, a 1962 graduate of the University of Pennsylva- nia School of Veterinary Medicine, has been an AAEP member since 1962. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors and as chairman of the Racing Committee. A racetrack practitioner from Prospect, ICY,Dr. Lavin practices prima- rily at Churchill Downs. In addition to his veterinary practice, he is involved with the family operation of Longfield Farm, abreeding and boarding facifity.Dr. Lavin is a member of the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association, the American Vet- erinary Medical Association, The Thor- oughbred Owners and Breeders Associa- tion, and is currently President of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association. "Dr. Evans brought to the table a tireless sense of energy and enthusiasm for equine practice and for organized veterinary medicine," stated Peter Haynes, DVM, immediate past president of AAEP. "He was very highly regarded throughout the veterinary profession, and he brought tremendous organiza- tional experience to AAEP.
