A real current American underground elec-tronica/rap act - mykki Blanco is truly pushing the envelope of the gender issue and similar boundaries of hip hop culture. With this, and his heavy music, he/she counts as a serious trespasser of the scene.

young star on board! mØ (born Karen marie Ørsted), from Denmark, one of the freshest and most exhilarating phenomena of scandinavian pop music, at the age of only 24, builds her great pop songs from soul, beat-driven r&B and wild electro. Known by many from Avicii’s 2013 club anthem Dear Boy and also from her collaboration with Diplo of major lazer, the singer-songwriter with the fantastic voice, whose name has popped up on the pages of the coolest music magazines, and who’s an equal fan of the spice girls and p J harvey, released her debut album no mythologies to follow in march 2014. she is presenting the material of this record in Budapest, on the A38 ship. support is provided by local electronic band Venice Valley.

perc is back on the A38 ship - since his last visit, the techno of the British genius has grown darker, and he has released one of the strongest and most original albums of the year. now we have the chance to hear some of that fresh material! in case that’s not enough, we can also welcome synthpop and dark-music maniac Alex Bau, who will make up for everything that the flood washed away last year.

one of the major stars of contemporary world music on the A38! hailing from mali, born in ivory Coast and currently living in france, the singer-songwriter-guitarist performs in hungary for the first time as a solo artist. Born into a family of artists in Africa, Diawara, rebelling against her parents, escaped to paris at the age of twenty, and that’s where her career started. she took part in theatrical plays, met rokia traore, joined Dee Dee Bridgewater’s grammy Award-winning African project, provided backing vocals on herbie hancock’s album imagine and worked on Damon Albarn’s Africa express, plus in rocket Juice & the moon, also formed by Albarn (with flea from rhCp and Afrobeat legend tony Allen). her first solo album, fatou, with a collaboration from led Zeppelin bassist-keyboardist John paul Jones, was released in 2011.

the culprit is returning to the scene of the crime! Brutal icelandic jazz funk, with the power of a geyser! samúel Jón samúelsson and his 18-piece big band already bilged the A38 last year - the funk Vikings are now most likely to attack the ship with the same volume, the same un-tameable rhythms and and the same irresistible atmosphere - this time in the company of an excellent American soul-jazz combo. those who buy tickets on the A38 website until April 30 will have exclusive access to the documentary made of the samúel Jón samúelsson Big Band’s A38 show from last year, until the day of the concert!

from Dawn to fall, formed in 2006, is one of Vienna’s heaviest, most energetic and lyric-centered indie formation. they released their first album the Beginning in 2008, and already in the same year they came up with several ‘unplugged’ songs which came out in 2009 under the title the Acoustic Chapter, followed by the album rising in 2011. in 2013 they took part in the well-known Vans Warped tour, and this year they released a new album called B l V r s. their music is compared to paramore, fall out Boy and panic At the Disco. on this night they re-ceive support from local band Kozmosz, famous for their speedy music and their cheeky, more-than-honest lyrics. they are also presenting their new ep on this night.

David eugene edwards, frontman of the late 16 horsepower, is coming to Budapest with his folky/heavy solo project, Woven hand, which is in no way inferior to his previous band. last year he particularly came to hungary to play with muzsikás on their sziget anniversary concert. the wrinkle-faced grandmaster of dark and heartbreaking ballads is presenting Woven hand’s new album refractory obdurate on this night. please note, for this evening we offer you a special, before-gig dinner.

hard rock classic on the ship! the former guitarist of ozzy osbourne and Badlands, Jake e. lee, born Jakey lou William in 1957, is returning to the stages with his new formation red Dragon Cartel and is perform-ing his first ever concert in Budapest. lee, who is regarded as one of the defining hard rock / heavy metal guitarists of the 1980’s, is stepping on the stage of the A38 with singer Darren smith (former drummer of harem scarem), bass player ronnie mancuso (Beggars & thieves) and drummer Jonas fairley (Black Betty). their eponymous debut album, produced by Kevin Churko, was released on January 28.

the drummer of one of pop history’s most important bands that crossed classical music with rock, and an emblematic member of his later band, Asia, the drummer of drummers, mr Carl palmer himself, is on the A38 ship again! he became a musician as a teenager (before elp, he was a member of the Crazy World of Arthur Brown and Atomic rooster), and has been releasing solo albums since 1980. he’s a witty, masterful and precise musician.

Balázs szabó is a real renaissance man: he’s a singer-songwriter, multiinstrumentalist, puppeteer and storyteller. he made his childhood dream come true by forming his own group, szabó Ba-lázs Bandája (meaning: Balázs szabó’s group), which has gained a serious reputation. his five-piece band, moving on the verge of hungarian folk music, rock, blues and funk, is releasing a new studio album after three years: the new record titled Élet elvitelre (life for takeaway) will be presented in Budapest on the A38 ship.

Austrian manu Delago is the drummer of Björk, the soloist of the london symphony orchestra, and, among others, the collaborator of Anoush-ka shankar and the Cinematic orchestra. yet, he is most well-known as the virtuoso of the per-cussion instrument, called ‘hang’. Delago started out as a drummer, and later received a classic percussion and jazz drum education. he is cata-pulting his audience into a new world with his excellent band on this evening, which will be opened by hungarian support act Calm spirit.

young hungarian singer odett, who has enjoyed continuing success in recent years, released her album Csillagtérkép (star map) in mid-April - her pop music, mixing modern guitar pop with electronica and delicate nu-folk has conquered the clubs and festivals, her songs have a rock solid place in the rotation of radio stations. on this night, she will pamper the audience of the A38 with older and newer hits.

formed in 1991, Úzgin Űver count as one of the most noted acts on the hungarian world music market. they don’t exactly play folk music, but they get inspiration from its melodies and rhythms, using traditional and modern instruments as well. they mix Carpathian, Balkan, mongolian, turkish, iranian, Armenian and Chinese motifs with jazz, prog rock, ambient, dub and even breakbeat elements.

According to wikipedia, you are the only known musical artist whose surveillance by intelligence agents has been exposed due to wikileaks documents. Are you proud of this?Very. however, it also makes you paranoid - like what hand might they have had in holding our music back, keeping it from people? i’ll never know, so i just keep working.

why did you decide to use absolutely no sampling on The coup’s latest album, Sorry To Bother You?that’s how we’ve been from day one. We’re a band. We’ve been a band. We’re not bound by genre or expectations. We’re a punk/funk/hip-hop explosion. We’re like the Clash mixed with sly and the family stone - without the cocaine.

How did Jolie Holland end up on the record? We used to be in love with each other for about a month some years ago. now we’re very good friends.

At one point, you taught lyric writing to a high school class. How did the idea come for that and is it something you’re gonna do in the future as well?the folks at the high school of social Justice asked me to do it. it’s a lot of work to teach a class the right way. it was fun, but i don’t think i’ll have time to do it again. About 5 of the kids in the class already had albums out.

i read that it took you eight months to write Me And Jesus The Pimp... How long does it take you to write a song nowadays?sometimes longer now! i also have songs that have taken 10 minutes to write. there are so many factors involved.

A couple of years ago you toured with the band galactic and you performed coup songs with them. was it OK for the other coup guys?they felt i was cheating on them. like galactic was my other lover. We’re all good now though. Doing that is what allowed me to get european booking agent contacts and that is why the Coup is here now.

were you angry with System Of A Down when they also released a record called Steal This Album?honestly, at that time i was not aware of system of A Down, or their album. i found out years later. But when you think about it, rick rubin - who says he’s a fan of the Coup - produced that soAD album and must have known about our album of the same title.

Sorry To Brother You came out after quite a long break. when can we expect the next coup album? We have an ep recorded, just trying to figure out the right time to release it. this year, though!

will your other band the Street Sweeper Social club where you play with Tom Morello ever get together again? We owe the label another album. maybe by next year.

what memories do you have of the SSSc tour when you opened for nine inch nails and Jane’s Addiction?trent reznor is the Batman. he appears out of nowhere while you’re eating or something and says something in a low, commanding, growly voice like „We should hang out tonight”, and you look away for a second while responding. you look back and he’s disappeared that quick. like Batman. perry farrell is as nice as you probably think he is. Dave navarro can get laid While he’s doing a solo.

what inspired your recent acoustic solo performances?Woody guthrie and Bob Dylan. it’s much different from what the Coup brings, but it focuses on the lyrics.

were you surprised when you were invited to play with Jeff Beck?yes! he’s a very humble, nice dude, too.

You produced the score of a Simpsons episode. would you call that a career highlight?one of them. it was strange. i did it all from home and sent it to them.

How did you feel when the norfolk city council voted to get rid of the law regarding public profanity, because of you?they only did that because i was about to sue them. it was a bullshit law and they knew it. i was the first person in 29 years that they applied that law on. they simply wanted me off the stage because they thought galactic was all White and were surprised that i had gotten up there. i’d rather have gotten the money before they got rid of the law.

How much are you involved in the Occupy Oakland movement?i was pretty involved. occupy oakland, as an entity or name, doesn’t exist anymore.

i read it on your Twitter that recently the police considered you a safety threat when you wanted to hold a speech at a university campus. why are they afraid of you?they want students only involved in theory. i’m coming and telling radicals to create a mass radical militant labor movement, utilizing the withholding of labor as a tool. this is not acceptable to them. i had to speak off-campus.

As an Afro-American, what’s your opinion about Barack Obama’s work as president?Well, i call myself Black. i don’t think anyone calls themselves „Afro-American”. obama’s a puppet of the ruling class like every president under capitalism has been or will be.

You once worked as a telemarketer. what did you think of the movie The wolf Of wall Street?terrible movie. i didn’t give a fuck about any of the characters.there is a telemarketing scene in it though. some of martin scorsese’s stuff is turning into cliche. there’s always the long slow motion scene of excess, with a voiceover describing the fun they were having, and some electronic music playing in the background. it’s not shocking to see people doing coke and having sex.

is it true that you’re working on a movie script?it’s written. mcsweeney’s Quarterly will publish a printed version of it in August and we hope to be in production by the end of the year,

Do you still listen to British bands like Tears For Fears or The cure?the Cure, definitely. not so much tears for fears.

two formations take their listeners on an enjoyable space flight tonight: one is American and is equally inspired by pere Ubu and John lurie, the other one is Austrian, and reflects on the work of Albert Ayler and other free-improv artists.

in the past two years, everybody in the north of europe had to learn the name of Death hawks, and now it’s time for them to conquer Central-east europe, as the band from tampere has started their first european tour that also involves hungary. the concert to be held in the exhibition space of the A38 ship will be a must-see event for the fans of bluesy krautrock with folk elements, not only because it will be delivered by one of the most hopeful bands of the continent, but also because we have rarely seen a young group evoke the delirious haze of the 1970’s in such a respectful and effective way.

the new sound of german doom jazz returns to Budapest with an exclusive program! this spring, radare break a 3-year silence, as the Wiesbaden quartet entered a hiatus after their last european tour (and their two-track ep, which lasts almost 30 minutes, nonetheless). the year 2014 sees not just the stage comeback but also a new album from the band that started out in the metal scene but later settled on a lot more strained tone. the peculiarity of the event, apart from the atmosphere of the exhibition space will be intensified by an exclusive choice of songs. support is provided by the Czakó Dániel trió.

it’s been twenty years since satantango, one of the most monumental hungarian films ever made, was released in hungarian cinemas. Almost exactly on the day of the anniversary, the A38 ship salutes the work of Béla tarr and lászló Krasznahorkai with a special program: the leading star and also composer of the movie, tarr’s old collaborator, mihály Víg, will perform the music of satantango. Due to the high interest, we are presenting the sequel to the program of April 27. of course, screening the 7-hour-plus movie is not possible, but certain highlights of the epic picture will be projected at the concert that will be recorded for television as well. the two programs differ from each other significantly: the first event focused more on the pictures of satantango, on the second night however, the lines of the film be in the center. tickets are still available in limited numbers!

it is safe to say that Deti picasso, the number one Armenian band from moscow, is almost officially located in Budapest. their two founding members, gaya and Karen Arutyunyan broke up their Armenian etno-rock band temporarily, so that they can carry on as a duo under the name Wattican punk ballet. But now the time is here for a comeback! the constantly renewing and changing Deti picasso initially returns with an acoustic program, which will include completely new compositions along the old classics. gaya and Karen will be augmented by harp player Anastasia razvalyayeva and drummer Áron porteleki.

the public places of our every day life appear on the pictures of Kata soós. places, where groups of people spend quite a lot of time daily, yet they lack the human element. these are the uniformed, indifferent scenes of our life, and they are not homey, still they are familiar to all of us. standing in front of soós’s paintings, we can almost hear the tapping of our shoes echoing in the space, where we are alone, because we arrived outside the opening hours: before opening or after closing, after anybody had left or before somebody came here.

“Kata Soós makes pageants that feed upon a common spatial and factual subconscious. More precisely, these visual details become a collective whole in a way that the artist leads the audience into the hidden corners

of public places that by far cannot be called intimate. She documents, collects, photographs and records such material elements and motives that can be found in wash houses and canteen kitchens. These details which can justly be called banal and accused of having a grease smell fall through the explanatory transformation at the end of which the panel pictures are born. As it could be read in an older review on Kata Soós: on the pictures of the artist, a certain exemplary anachronism and a deeply coded fear from the ordinariness and the milieu of institutions appear at the same time.” (József Martinkó)

the exhibition can be visited every day from 11.00 to 18.00 with registration in advance.please register by telephone before your visit on the following number: +36 1 464 39 40

may sees a new chef, and partly as a consequence of this, a new menu arriving at the A38 restaurant. the new chef, Krisztián Bozsányi, has been plying his trade for nearly two decades. he has worked in restaurants and hotels, made himself familiar with the secrets of hungarian and international cuisine, entered several competetitions and also earned the so-called “mastercook” qualification. “After so many years of professional training, i can call myself really successful, because i have seen many guests leave smiling. that is the true appreciation, even if it sounds a bit like a cliche”, he says.

the new summer menu of the A38, starting in may, offers nothing but culinary excitements. We can taste the hash brown baked in a pie with vegetables and smoked cheese, which in fact is a seasoned potato pancake, and it is baked ready with fried vegetables and cheese in our furnace. Another offer is the piquant duck breast ragout soup, which is a slightly provence-style, refreshing and at the same time filling dish, richly garnished with courgette, eggplant and lots of tomatoes. A further highlight is the rose duck, with vanilla cherry ragout and walnut “guba” (“here i work with a duck breast prepared with the sous vide method, and cherry, which is the fundamental ingredient, the garnish is just gratis”, says the new chef). guests preferring spicier meals can order the mangalitsa tenderloin in chives mustard on home-made “lángos”, which is a seasoned pork dish ripened in a spicy mustard souse with onions, prepared on a roast plate, left dripping, laid on a fresh lángos so that its look can already delight the guests. needless to say, there is room for dessert as well: double chocolate cake with ginger icecream, made out of 72% chocolate, with only a minimal amount of flour added.

A38 is the reincarnation of ‘tripolie’, a Ukrainian stone-carrier ship, built in 1968. the name comes from Artemovsk, which is the ship prototype, and this one was the 38th unit of the ‘Artemovsk’ class. the re-building project lasted for one and a half years. Architects, ship engineers, acoustic designers, electricians, musi-cians and promoters contributed their skills and experience to make it a both artist and audience friendly place.

After years of constant development, A38 has become a cultural entertainment centre with international programme, a restaurant, five bars, one main concert hall, open-air terraces and lounges - all in one aboard as one of the most fascinating venues in Budapest. since its opening it became the flagship of Budapest nightlife, a must-see spectacle on the Danube with scenic view and one of europe’s coolest clubs, which has been voted ‘the World’s greatest Bar’ – according to the poll of lonely planet in 2012.

A38 ship is located in Budapest, at the Buda side of petőfi bridge, easily accessible by a few minutes walk from tram 4 and 6 “petőfi híd budai hídfő” stop or by BKV public transport ships.

the concert hall is a place for live shows and parties, and several bars ship-wide are open for the audience to chat and have a drink.the restaurant offers a daily menu every weekday from 12h to 15h for 1150 hUf.

our roof terrace is closed in the autumn/winter season and reopens in April 2013.for our smoking visitors, we have a heated smoking terrace area with its own bar.
