technokunst, the most popular monthly series of A38 is two years old this December. invit-ing the biggest names in modern techno, their guest this month will be marcel Dettmann from Berlin, glorified resident of the legend-ary Berghain. if you want to hear intelligent electronic music in an industrial environment only a former Ukranian cargo ship can provide, check out Dettmann’s set with stunning visu-als by glowing Bulbs VJ team.

have you ever heard of the hungarian Betyars? they were bandits in the 19th century and were celebrated nationwide - kind of like robin hood, but they never helped anyone! nowadays, the Betyars are young and tal-ented musicians who redefine folk elements and add a bit of punk and rock & roll to it. interested? then you should also see KusKus from the neighbouring Austria, who are a bit calmer, but not less entertaining, with an enchanting female vocalist as part of our Sound/Effect series.

fear factory is back on a monumental tour with genius Devin townsend and War from a harlot’s mouth who define themselves simply as “extreme math metal mayhem” which sounds actually good. Since teaming up again with Dino Cazares, fear factory made two albums, the second of which is this year’s the industrialist, while Devin townsend has released Epicloud. mixing electronic music with metal, they are among the very few bands of the 90s who stayed creative and influential for today’s artists. Check out our interview with Devin townsend on page 5!

nomeansno is not the average punk rock band, as the Wright brothers are masters of their instruments and un-ordinary influences with a lot of sev-enties’ jazz and funk music. they are progressive, funny and intelligent to the extent they are often called the origin of math rock. Before them, you can hear Dereng, a supergroup of hungary’s most celebrated contem-porary rock musicians.

la maison tellier is kind a family business in the traces of maupassant, the whole band called “tellier” from the musicians to management and technicians. they are inspired by the music of cowboys and mariachis, while the hungarian act centers around frontman Balázs Szabó and alternative rock. the show is part of A38’s tours de france series pre-senting the finest of french pop music.

We have a very special band playing on the ship on 1 December. Efterk-lang made an album discovering the ghost town of Piramida in an arctic island and now they presenting the material to the Budapest audience. rasmus Stolberg bassist replied to our questions.

Tell us something about the new film, The Ghost of Piramida which was screened also at A38 on 22 November.

the Danish director Andreas Koe-foed followed us on our 9 day trip to Piramida on Spitsbergen where our new album took its start last year. his film documents our visit to this former russian min-ing town and it also beautifully tells the story of the ghost town through the eyes of a former resi-dent. We think Andreas has man-aged to make a very beautiful film and are happy to see it screened before our concert in Budapest.

You indicate yourself on your homepage as “childhood friends”. After several albums, tours and movies, can you still keep it inti-mate and familiar?

it is of course a challenge to the original friendship to suddenly be so busy with a career and music - and it is true to say that these days our friendship is centered around Efterklang. We spend so much time to-gether via the band, but 99% of the time we have a really good time together and we make things together and feel good about this and i think our old friendship plays a very big role in this. We share a story and an adventure together that so far is about 15 years old - and that is something i value very much.

Tell us something about the guest musicians you’re playing with on the Piramida tour.

We have Peter Broderick in the band - we love him and he is a very big part of Efterklang. We also have Katinka fogh Vindelev in the band - she is an incredible singer with a classical background and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to tour with her. finally we will have a new drum-

mer for this concert. his name is tatu and we think is an amazing drummer, but we yet have to get to know him properly and vice versa.

I just saw on your Facebook that you were involved in a hotel fire in October. What happened and were the band in danger?

nothing bad happened. two cars started burning in the basement un-der the hotel and at 3 in the morning the whole hotel was evacuated. Af-ter two hours of waiting we were al-lowed to go back to our rooms. it was a weird night with lots of smoke and no sleep, but luckily no one were hurt.

You collected sounds for your new album, Piramida in a former Soviet mine town and now you’re going to play on a former Ukrainian cargo ship. What are your feeling towards scenes like them?

We love to change our live shows. Sometimes we change the line-up or play with orchestras - or sometimes we play in special venues like A38. We try to make every concert we do special and a special location is al-ways a nice inspiration.this will be our first concert in hungary ever - so we are quite excited about the concert in fact.

2012 - year of awards

Budapest’s 3 finest electronic music bands team up to make new year’s Eve memorable. Bladerunnaz will drop the city’s biggest drumand-bass party with Alix Perez and the best djs from all around hungary, while our fancy restaurant turns into a panorama party room where ninjabreakz’s guests will play the finest breakbeat and electro, while in our ViP rear bar, which is rarely open to the public, Budapest Bass music have an exclusive line-up of garage and house djs. Spend your midnight on the ship!

Devin townsend was kind to answer our questions about the current events in his carreer via Skype at the Bordeaux stop of the Epic industrialist tour.

December 2 will be your first time in Budapest. What are your feelings towards the show?

Oh. really? this whole tour we go to places where we don’t play often and hungary is one of them. i heard very nice things about the country, i think it is nice to show what we musically do to different people.

Tell me how you made your new album Epicloud and how did the whole thing started.

the way that i always write every record is that i just tend to constantly play guitar, and then songs just came out as the result of that and i pick the songs i find the most interesting. Epicloud is no different from Ziltoid or the hummer. Epicloud is just the newest music from me i suppose.

What’s next? Are you ever going to continue Ziltoid?

Casualties of Cool will be next, but it’s not gonna be focused, not a big release. it’s just something i had in my system. Ziltoid will be a lot more

over the top, needs a lot more skill and production, as i’ve been writing it for two years now.

I just saw your new video, Lucky Animal, which is quite funny.

the song itself is kind of a silly song, i’m aware of that. the offbeats has been part of what we’ve done for a long time, to have everybody involved together, i think it makes it a cool statement and not only for the record. it is something that seemed to be a good solution and a really logical progression for us.

how is it like to tour with Fear Factory and what was your reaction hearing that Sylosis has dropped the tour?

they had to do it, and that’s fine, i was a little disappointed, but i didn’t spend much time thinking about it. fear factory, we’ve been friends for many years and i think they are a great band, but the amount of snoring and farting going on in that bus is pretty immense. my initial feelings about the tour was that we will get along well, and it’s not bad at all.

For how long do you want to keep the DevinTownsend Project going?

there’s no real plans either way.

Csaba Károlyi literary critic: “you always turn down people who try to find autobiographical elements in your novels. But they seem to be there, however indirect they are. for instance, all your novels have a character whose life story has the most similarities with yours.”Péter nádas, internationally acclaimed hungarian writer: “Can i ask you something? how can i possibly avoid this?”

Bazil Duliskovich’s upcoming exhibition not only shares the title of nádas’s latest novel but also the mentality. the narrative of his paintings has become the more personal, the more collective during the years or the other way down: the more collective, the more personal. Do we

feel the eastern regions of our heart throbbing standing in front of his paintings? Can we fill his Propp-like folk tale themes with meaning? Can we put together a story only seeing characters without characteristics? Do we feel comfortable in this familiar chaos where possibility overshadows reality so often?

the exhibition can be visited from 11 December to 13 January from 11h to 18h.

A38 is the reincarnation of ‘tripolie’, a Ukranian stone-carrier ship, built in 1968. the name comes from Artemovsk, which is the ship prototype, and this one was the 38th unit of the ‘Artemovsk’ class. the re-building project lasted for one and a half years. Architects, ship engineers, acoustic designers, electricians, mu-sicians and promoters contributed their skills and experience to make it a both artist and audience friendly place.

After years of constant development, A38 has become a cul-tural entertainment centre with international programme, a restaurant, five bars, one main concert hall, open-air terraces and lounges - all in one aboard as one of the most fascinat-ing venues in Budapest. Since its opening it became the flag-ship of Budapest nightlife, a must-see spectacle on the Danube with scenic view and one of Europe’s coolest clubs, which has been voted ‘the World’s greatest Bar’ – according to the poll of lonely Planet in 2012.

A38 Ship is located in Budapest, at the Buda side of Petőfi bridge, easily accessible by a few minutes walk from tram 4 and 6 “Petőfi híd budai hídfő” stop or by BKV public trans-port ships.

the concert hall is a place for live shows and parties, and several bars ship-wide are open for the audience to chat and have a drink.the restaurant offers a daily menu every weekday from 12 Pm to 3 Pm for 1150 hUf.

Our roof terrace is closed in the autumn/winter season and reopens in April 2013.for our smoking visitors, we have a heated smoking terrace area with its own bar.
