 St. Andrew’s School
l e t t e rf r o m t h e h e A d m A S t e rAs I just finished my fifteenth year as Head Master, I am filled with
confidence and hope at what a St. Andrew’s education can mean to
a student and his or her family. Our dedicated faculty – many long
tenured – continue to work hard in various arenas, but specifically in the
classroom utilizing those methods by which they can teach each child in
the style they need. Our enthusiastic Board of Trustees works very hard
to raise funds, offer direction, and plan the future of the School. Our
support staff and maintenance department provide us with the everyday
functions that help us do what we need to make the School work. And
of course our students, the reason for our existence, continue to amaze
me with their progress, their enthusiasm, and their recognition of what
St. Andrew’s has done for them. Our Commencement 2011 punctuated
that attitude with an exclamation point as each student with a different
past walked across the stage as a St. Andrew’s success story with six
hundred plus people applauding that special moment.
We have, as you will see from the financial report, survived the recession
and balanced the budget. We did this through cost cutting measures,
watching each budget closely, raising more than $600,000 in the
Annual Fund (a record!), and strong enrollment. While we continue
to act conservatively, we have restored raises for our faculty and staff
and completed several capital projects, including the renovation of a
campus house we bought a few years ago. The largest project is the
expansion and renovation of Gardiner Hall, which was completed
for our fall semester. We are enjoying the larger dining facilities, new
entrance, landscaping, and the renovated kitchen for our growing school
and meeting fire codes. This project was the first phase of a facility
renewal totaling more than ten million dollars that will eventually
include renovation of our largest dorms, Bill’s House and Cady House.
During Parents Weekend, we launched our capital campaign, Building
Our Community, which will continue to support facility renovations
imperative to the daily living of our students and their teachers.
This is another step in creating the kind of residential life
experience that will not only benefit our boarders, but day
students as well.
I urge you to visit the campus, see what is happening, and spend
time with us. Our door is always open to you!
With Appreciation,
John D. Martin
Head Master
 Annual report 2010-2011
Dear Friends,
We’re in our 117th year and, upon reflection, I think Father Chapin, our founder,
would be most pleased.
The school is certainly a different place than he would recognize, a place with
modern buildings, indoor plumbing and many more students than he’d have ever
imagined. Gone are the horses and the farm. Still, he’d be reflective that the
culture of doing good deeds, working together to make things happen and dealing
with one another with common courtesy remain the core values that allow for the
real work to be accomplished, that of educating our students.
For families who have children at St. Andrew’s, they know first hand of the
professionalism of our educators. In our professional teaching staff, our
educational foundation is one of granite. Our administration and support staff
have us focused on our future while ensuring our educational outcomes are
achieved, today. Our board and many benefactors continue to expand their
manifold graciousness to St. Andrew’s.
On behalf of all of us at St. Andrew’s, thank you for all you have done and
continue to do to advance our mission.
And, to our families and our students, we thank you for the confidence you have
in us. You are our reason for existence. We pledge to continue on the path
laid down 117 years ago by Father Chapin, where we provide an educational
experience that converts to a lifetime of learning ambition and positive citizenry.
Many blessings!

 St. Andrew’s School
 Annual report 2010-2011
I am pleased to report our progress for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011
While the School continues to operate in a weakened overall economy
where the full recovery has yet to be experienced, operations for the year
are reason for encouragement in many areas of measurement.
St. Andrew’s unrestricted operating results before capital expenditures and
principal debt service produced a surplus of $615.6 thousand which was
significantly better than previous year operations and the 2010-2011 fiscal
year base plan. After capital improvements and principal debt service,
the School’s operating surplus was $179.0 thousand. The general surplus
for the year was mostly attributable to higher enrollment particularly in
the Boarding program levels coupled with the maintenance of financial
aid levels close to the original targets. Additionally, the final operating
numbers were buoyed by a record level of contributions and grants, lower
program and support services expense, and a reduced interest expense
level. The School continues to operate with a reduced full-time equivalent
staffing base and remains guarded from an expense and program expansion
standpoint.
The School served approximately 218 full-time equivalent students in
grades 3-12. This recent record of 62 Boarders is to be celebrated from
both a mission viewpoint and admissions achievement in this economic
climate. Gross revenue from tuition was $8.0 million which was a material
improvement from last year and also exceeded our plan expectations.
Financial aid remains a cornerstone of the School’s programmatic ethos.
Financial aid which swelled to $2.1 million last year as an enrollment
management tool was essentially flat between years. Despite essentially
providing level funding, financial aid as a percent of tuition at 26.9%
still represents a level that vastly exceeds most schools and reinforces the
School’s commitment to providing education to a diverse socio-economic
student body.
The endowment enjoyed growth over the year increasing by
approximately $900 thousand from last year’s levels to a period end
endowment total of $17.3 million. The contribution to operations
from the endowment totaled $823.4 thousand, representing 10.9% of
the School’s total revenue. Based on a three-year moving average the
School spends approximately 5.0% of the endowment value annually.
This spending policy methodology provides the School operating funds
while protecting the corpus from meaningful erosion. The Endowment
Committee of the Board of Trustees executes its fiduciary responsibilities
by safeguarding the assets of the School while maximizing return and
minimizing risk within a well developed and strategically oriented
investment policy. The total return for the endowment for the fiscal
year was 9.78%. Our endowment level compares favorably to similarly
sized schools as does the related endowment supplement per student.
The School recognizes the importance of the endowment as an asset to
ensure both current and future financial stability and continues to seek
growth through new gifts as well as sound financial stewardship.
With the guidance of the Facilities Committee, the physical plant
was further enhanced with improvements to residential facilities
and academic buildings. The School chose to outsource grounds
maintenance to a longstanding professional contractor. This renewed
emphasis on our grounds is designed to provide the community and
visitors alike a manicured campus that continues to be functional while
highlighting our unique buildings and interesting landscape features.
We hope to complete the renovation of the Frederick Law Olmsted
designed quad which was enhanced only recently with irrigation through
donor generosity. A full interior renovation and addition to the School’s
dining facility, Gardiner Hall is nearly complete. This ambitious project,
which is part of the School’s Master Plan, has been included as a key
element within the Capital Campaign, Building Our Community.
The renovation has energized the School, making for a sociable and
pleasurable dining experience with increased seating capacity, modern
seating options, and digital monitors available. Finely landscaped,
the entrance plaza provides outdoor seating and the vestibule is warm
and inviting. Consistent with the School’s Master Plan and needs
assessment, the School is in the feasibility and early planning phases

for significant improvements to its dormitories. These improvements
are critical to not only expanding the boarding community but also to
ensure that the School remains competitive with its residential facilities.
Technology within the School continues to experience pressure
for additional investment. To that end the School is assessing its
infrastructure and considering the benefits of server virtualization
and the introduction of “cloud computing”. In tandem with a recent
investment in new network hardware this strategic direction will
allow for more efficient administration of our expanding network and
licensing requirements while providing the community the ability to
access their own files and a greater variety of School software not only
from any digital device on campus but remotely as well. This will create
tremendous benefit to the faculty and student body in the teaching and
learning process, respectively.
For the 2011-2012 fiscal year, the School has projected a balanced
budget with a level enrollment to be achieved in a economy that
continues to waver.
A special thanks to the Endowment Committee, Facilities Committee
and the Finance Committee for their strategic vision and caring
stewardship of the School’s assets.
Thank you for your continued support,

THE ALFRED BUCKLEY, JR. AWARD FOR VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP
Alfred Buckley, Jr. was a member of St. Andrew’s Board of Trustees from 1975 until his passing in December 2005. Beloved by all for his warmth and dry wit, “Buck” played many roles in the course of his long associa-tion with St. Andrew’s. The recipient of this award represents Buck’s commitment, active involvement, and ability to get things done.
The Buckley award for 2010-2011 was presented to Kim O’Donoghue not only for all the tasks she has per-formed for St. Andrew’s over the years, but for her inspiring energy, unfaltering commitment, and contagious smile. Since 2003, Kim was there with her sleeves rolled up. Promoting the importance of volunteer efforts, she played a key role with the revitalization of the St. Andrew’s Parent Association and served as Co-Presi-dent in 2008. She has contributed supplies and baked goods, organized many events and worked in the class-room. She was a tireless member of the Parent Giving Committee, and played an important role in creating the St. Andrew’s School Commitment to Community Scholarship. Kim stands out most because of the spirit and passion with which she worked. In 2010, as Co-Chairperson for a successful Night of Shining Stars, she could be seen on campus at all hours of the day carefully tending to every detail. Although her daughter Libby graduated in 2010, Kim continues to volunteer at St. Andrew’s fitting in time between work and family.

 Annual report 2010-2011
Building Our Community is about ensuring that the unique, nurturing
community that has always been the essence of St. Andrew’s will
continue to be the cornerstone of its success.
Since the arrival of Head Master John D. Martin in 1996, St. Andrew’s
has become a leader in the educational community. As a result, student
population has increased by 80%, and families are finding the programs at
St. Andrew’s School to be a long-sought-after alternative in their efforts to
find the appropriate learning and living environment for their child.
To maintain the same unique offerings to our current student body as
well as the future needs of additional families, the facilities imperative
to daily campus living must be expanded and renovated. Therefore,
Building Our Community will address the following building and
construction goals over the next three years:
•ExpansionandrenovationofGardinerHalldiningfacility.
Cost:$2.9million.
•ExpansionandrenovationofCadyHouseandBill’s
Housedormitories.
Cost:$7.1million.
•ExpansionandrenovationofBishopClarkHall
studentcenter.
Cost:$1million.
Along with these capital endeavors of bricks and mortar, we remain
committed to a strong and growing Annual Fund which will account for
$1.5 million of unrestricted gifts over the next three years.
An ambitious undertaking to raise $12.5 million, Building Our Community will
solidify the essential qualities of our welcoming community.
Early pledges to this campaign and additional capital donations allowed us
to complete renovations of Hardy Hall to include a new Lower School for
grades three through five, renovations to Jones Gymnasium to include a
state of the art fitness center, and the construction of a service road on the
north end of campus.
St. Andrew’s School is truly grateful to those individuals in our community
for their continued commitment and support of this endeavor.
“we have been blessed with the leadership of John martin over
the past 15 years. in that time, through the hard work of
his dedicated faculty and others, we have witnessed an 80%
growth in student population. the success of this campaign
will further enhance our highest objective: that sense of ’be-
longing’ to a nurturing community of students, many of whom
consider St. Andrew’s their home.” – SAndy mCCulloCh

Extraordinary Donors
“Partners in Education” are donors who wish to make our vibrant academic programs and
peaceful campus available for a young person in need.
Since 1893, offering a generous, need-based financial aid program has been a cornerstone
of our mission. This results in strong social and economic diversity throughout our commu-
nity. This year alone, approximately 50% of our students were granted financial assistance
with many students benefiting from our Partners in Education.
A Partner in Education is a donor who is willing to pledge a substantial amount to the
School’s Financial Aid program for a period of at least four years. Their financial com-
mitment is matched with funds from the School’s Endowment for Scholarships, along with
other funds, allowing the School to open its doors to those who couldn’t otherwise attend.
Commitments to this program have made funding possible for more than ten students since
its inauguration in 2009. Aware of the individual lives they have touched with their generos-
ity, our Partners in Education have become special members of our community.
We are grateful for our Partners in Education and the students they support. By providing
financial aid support, they bring new faces to campus that foster new friendships, offer new
perspectives, and strengthen our community.

about something we are required to do, but rather the good feeling of helping oth-

helps students to become outstanding individuals. thank you for St. Andrew’s for

C l A S Sy e A rDISTINGUISHED YOUNG ALUMNI AWARD
This award was created to recognize and honor a St. Andrew’s graduate 40 years or younger whose achievements, strength of character and civic leadership serve as models to inspire and challenge the students of St. Andrew’s School. The award is presented each year at the Annual Meet-ing of the Corporation in September.
The 2010 Distinguished Young Alumni Award was presented to Karen Urbaniak Anderson ’90. After receiving her BA in Psychology from Pine Manor College in 1994, Karen became involved with the Child Welfare System joining Tides Family Services, a non-profit social service agency that addresses the needs of Rhode Island’s most at-risk children, who are wayward, truant or adjudicated. There, she helped to create The Tides Outreach and Tracking Program, an intensive program that ensures fam-ily preservation and school completion for troubled youth. As Program Coordinator, she provided family visits, crisis orientation, school advocacy, court visits, and recreational therapy. She became Program Coordinator when she created a new program in Woonsocket. Karen also worked for a period of time with Tides Youth Diversion Program which provides an early intervention program for young people who are not yet involved in the juvenile justice system. Karen spent more than a decade working to make the world a better place for our youth. Recently, she has turned her focus to her growing family and has enjoyed the key role she plays with the St. Andrew’s Alumni Association as Events Coordinator.

time, talent, and treasure for the School providing a forum for the free
interchange of ideas and communication common to the parents, their
children, and the School. They support the School by building friendships
among families, through volunteer efforts and fundraising for special
projects. The School is truly grateful for all that they do.

A popular means of making a gift is by writing a check. All checks
can be made payable to St. Andrew’s School and mailed directly to the
Development Office, St. Andrew’s School, 63 Federal Road, Barrington,
RI 02806.
Credit Card
Using a credit card is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to give to St. Andrew’s School. We accept Mastercard, Visa, Discover, and American Express and there are three ways to make a credit card gift:
• Online: visit www.standrews-ri.org and click on giving.
• By phone: call 401-246-1230 extension 3044.
• By mail: Fill out the necessary information on the pledge form and mail it back to the address listed above.
Matching Gifts
Matching gifts from your employer are an important source of Annual
Fund revenue. Such gifts are an excellent opportunity for donors to
double or even triple the amount of their contributions. All matching
gifts are credited to the donor.
If you do not work for a matching gift company but your spouse does, a
match from that employer may be possible. As guidelines for matching
gifts vary by company, please inquire with the Human Resource
department for information. Once you have obtained a matching gift
form, simply complete it and enclose it with your gift.
Stock Gifts
St. Andrew’s School gratefully accepts gifts of stock, which are credited
to the donor at the full market value on the date of the gift. Gifts of
appreciated securities also provide significant savings for the donor
by avoiding capital gains taxes. Call 401-246-1230 ext. 3044 for
information about the stock transfer process.
Planned Gifts
These include life income plans as well as lead trusts, bequests, real
estate, tangible personal property, closely held stock, life insurance, and
remainder interest in a home. Each qualifies for a tax deduction but
each is subject to special rules on valuation. For further information,
please contact Brenda Migliaccio, Director of Annual Giving at 401-
246-1230 ext. 3033.
Electronic Transfer
Arrangements can be made to transfer funds electronically by calling
401-246-1230 ext. 3044.
