What does the Community and Events team do?

• The Community and Events Fundraising team is responsible for

developing fundraising in the regions and countries

• We do this by:

• Planning and organising our own fundraising events

• Promoting and supporting third party events

• Working with our existing Stroke Clubs and Operations groups to

develop income for the charity

• Developing opportunities for community groups to fundraise for us

• Facilitate “Reactive” fundraising where supporters come to us to take

part in their own events/activities to raise £ for us

• However it hasn’t always been like this……………

History

Old approach - Community Fundraising main focus on In

Memoriam donations

Team worked in isolation from Services in regions and

countries

In Memoriam donations the prime income source in the

“regions”

No C&E fundraising teams in Scotland, Northern Ireland or

Jersey

Page 16: Fundraising & Services working together · Fundraising & Services working together A joined up approach in the Community . Stroke Helpline 0303 3033 100 stroke.org.uk • Raise awareness

Stroke Helpline 0303 3033 100

stroke.org.uk

Something had to change…

We developed portfolio of Planned Fundraising Events to attract live

supporters

We needed to ensure that our C&E fundraisers were active in their

communities developing awareness and fundraising opportunities for

our supporters

We needed to ensure that we could work together with our Services

colleagues on the co-creation of regional plans

We needed to ensure that the network of Stroke Clubs could work

with us to generate income both for themselves and the Association

We needed to generate opportunities for volunteers

We needed to become UK wide

We needed to be able to generate more income from Community and

Reactive sources ie volunteer led

Page 17: Fundraising & Services working together · Fundraising & Services working together A joined up approach in the Community . Stroke Helpline 0303 3033 100 stroke.org.uk • Raise awareness

What we did…

Introduced fundraising teams in Scotland, Northern Ireland and

Jersey to complement our existing teams in England and Wales

We developed several planned events activities which we

delivered across the UK including our Resolution Runs series

We developed a specific Step out for Stroke event for our

service users to help them with their Life After Stroke -

delivered across the UK with Services colleagues engaged with

their fundraisers on the co-creation of plans.

We developed our Partnership in Fundraising activity with

Stroke Clubs so that we could share resource and generate

income for both

What we did 2…

Developed a UK wide Telemarketing team who we use to

promote specific challenge events across the UK attracting

significant numbers of supporters who we can build

relationships with

Created a new Stroke Ambassador role for our volunteers who

would help our fundraising teams

Increasinngly built our relationships and planning activity

between the C&E fundraising and Services teams

Current C&E structure

• The Community and Events Fundraising teams consist of the following staff

members in each region/country

• Community and Events Fundraising Manager

• Regional Fundraiser

• Fundraising Assistant

• The Regions are structured so that we have a team in 9 regions across

England and teams in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Jersey

• The fundraising team structure matches the structure of the Services team – we

are co-terminus in Regions and Countries

• Fundraising staff now work collaboratively with their Service colleagues on the

development of fundraising plans

SAVG FR Leaflet

Both your group and the Stroke Association need to raise money to help support people affected by stroke. Here are some ideas of how we can work together to help raise funds

Sip for Stroke and other sponsored events

You can organise your own sponsored event using the event templates, support literature and materials available from your local fundraising team.

Organised events

For example, Step out, Resolution Run and other running events, cycle rides, and abseils

Your local fundraising team organises a number of events every year. If someone in your group would like to take part in a Stroke Association organised event then a percentage of the money they raise can go to the group. But don’t forget to tell us before they do the event that they are one of your members / supporters!

Supermarkets

Community chip schemes, bag packing, general collections and awareness days

Lots of supermarket chains have a scheme where they support local charities but they do vary from store to store.

For example, You could approach supermarkets in your area with an applications for a community grant. Sometimes these are decided by a board of supermarket employees, sometimes by the shoppers themselves.

Another idea is to request for a bag packing day where your members covers as many tills as possible with collection buckets, or you could just hold a general collection. But the more collectors you can muster, the more successful this is. In some cases, over £1,000 has been raised in one day at one supermarket.

It’s always a good idea to let your local fundraising team know if you are planning to approach any supermarkets so they don’t accidentally approach them at the same time!

Local Charity of the Year

For example, Mayoral Appeals, Golf Captains (or Lady Captains) Charity, Round Table, Lions, Masons, Buffalos, or Rotary Clubs

Being chosen as Charity of the Year can generate a lot of support but it is also a big undertaking and is better done in partnership with your local fundraising team. You need to let your fundraising team know before you approach any of these organisations, or if you have been approached by them. Your fundraiser will then work with you to help you plan an approach, support the Charity of the Year activities you’ll be asked to do, and discuss with you how the money is to be shared.

Ideas! Our Big Get Together pack has lots of ideas on how you can raise money

Collecting tins and buckets

T-shirts to help draw attention to stroke

Due to the cost of these please note that we may only be able to provide you with

a couple depending on the type and size of your fundraising activity.

Justgiving and other online sponsorship sites

If someone in your group is doing a sponsored event then they can set up a

Justgiving page linked to the Stroke Association. There is a cost involved in this

so either we can agree to share the income, or the group can simply keep the

money raised and the Stroke Association will use the money it claims back from

the government (GiftAid) to pay the admin fees.

Golf Charity of the Year

• FR created database of all North West Golf Clubs

• Every 12 months there is a mailshot sent to clubs

including a letter and new branded leaflet

• This highlights and encourages golf clubs to support not only the national

charity but the opportunity to support a local Stroke Association Voluntary group

The new SAVG leaflet outlines to them that Golf Charity of the year partnerships

are a way to gain income, awareness of their group as well as volunteers.

Step Out

• FR attend regional staff/management meetings to cascade information, Stroke

Association groups staff primary contacts encourage the SAVGs to get

involved.

• RIO set up teleconference for all North West staff to ask any questions or raise

concerns – including a prompt to invite SAVGs and Stroke Clubs to be involved.

• Region created shared spreadsheet which all staff could access which acted as

a project plan

Added into the project plan is an email out to all SAVGs direct from the regional

FR team to inform them of all Step Outs in the region that they could be

involved in.
