Explanation of parts

Homepage/Explanation of Site:This is where you tell visitors what to see on your site and where to find it. Make it clear andconcise.

Headlines from Hoke and Daisy’s perspective:Find out what the BIG stories in politics, society, sports, and/or entertainment were for your year.Research and add information you find into your research notes (4 sources per person). Youshould also find pictures to fit with your headlines. Information should be summarized, and NOTCOPIED DIRECTLY FROM THE SOURCE!

Connection to DMD/Reaction from Hoke & Daisy:Answer the FOUR questions on the research notes pages, then include 2 of the 4 answers for eachevent listed in your timeline. These connections/reactions should feel as though Hoke and Daisyare telling visitors about these topics.

Things to consider

Based on what you know of Hoke’s and Daisy’s characters, how do you think they would react tothe various news from the year? Consider how they both changed over the years and how theyreacted in the play to historical events!

Research Tips

Remember to look for multiple source types: books, reference books, websites, online newspaperarticles, and magazine articles.

Places to look at:● The set aside books on book cart in LMC● LMC website resources: Driving Miss Daisy Research Pathfinder on the Moodle!

Bibliography

This is where you cite your sources! List the sources you used to find your information usingproper MLA citation format.

● At least 4 sources per person need to be listed and used.● All pictures used need to be properly cited here as well.● A bibliography can be created for many of your sources using www.noodletools.com/ or

www.easybib.com/

Bibliography How-To

You need to have a bibliography for each page of your website (except homepage unlesshomepage contains a photo or info from a source). A bibliography lists the sources you used tofind all your information. Remember, each group member will need to find 3 sources MINIMUMfor his/her page of site.

For this project, your bibliography needs to be done using the Modern Language Association(MLA) format. Here is how to do that:

Books:Lastname, Firstname. Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Mediumof Publication.

EX: Henley, Patricia. The Hummingbird House. Denver: MacMurray, 1999. Print.

Article in a Reference Book (e.g. Encyclopedias, Dictionaries):Lastname, First name. "Title of Essay." Title of Collection. Ed. Editor's Name(s)., Year. Medium ofPublication.

EX: "Ideology." The American Heritage Dictionary. 3rd ed. 1997. Print.

Electronic Source (website, online article, photo, etc):Editor, author, or compiler name (if available). Name of Site. Version number. Name ofinstitution/organization affiliated with the site (sponsor or publisher), date of resource creation (ifavailable). Medium of publication. Date of access.

EX: The Purdue OWL Family of Sites. The Writing Lab and OWL at Purdue and Purdue U, 2008.Web. 23 Apr. 2008.

Timeline optionsThere are many different media sources that you can embed in your timeline.

● Vimeo video or YouTube Video – These can be taped recordings from first-personhistorical accounts or short videos that pertain or add to the information on your year.

● Google Search Image – In addition to pictures, this can also include PDF documentsfrom your year that pertains to your info (newspaper article, speech, advertisement, etc).

● Flickr Image – There are many places that you may find images in Flickr that are takenduring your year. Example: The Library of Congress photostream, The New York PublicLibrary photostream, The US National Archives Collection, The Smithsonian photostream. You can search any or all of these.

● Tweet – Can you locate a tweet that represents an event from your year?● Google Map – Is there a location where something important occurred? You can put a

link to this location and explain its significance in the text.● Sound Cloud (An interview? A commentary? See Extra Credit Options below.)● Wikipedia Entry

Page 4: A Year in the life of Daisy and Hoke · 2013. 6. 3. · Explanation of parts Homepage/Explanation of Site: This is where you tell visitors what to see on your site and where to find

Extra Credit OptionsYou have the option to add various things to embellish your site and make it even better. Theseadditions, if done well, can be worth extra credit. The credit comes from your ability to figure out how toinclude other components to your site. Teachers will not help with these add-ons.

Some possibilities:*

● Twitter – create a twitter account and write tweets from a prominent person related to your timeperiod, or from multiple people at one event related to your topic within your timeline. Youshould create a minimum of 8 tweets and 2 retweets (max 140 words each). Insert one of yourtweets into your timeline & provide a link to your twitter page.

● Create a “quiz” subpage in which visitors can test their knowledge learned.● Record something in GarageBand, upload it to SoundCloud (create an account), and link this as

one of your events. This could be a pretend “eye-witness” event, radio broadcast, be creative! Orwrite and perform a rap describing an aspect of your topic from your year. Or find a song popularduring your year and perform it (singing or playing an instrument). Compose an original piece ofmusic about the your year, based on what you’ve researched about your topic.

● Eyewitness history: conduct an interview with someone who remembers a significant event thatoccurred during your year (your DMD interview could work). Record this in GarageBand, thenupload it to SoundCloud, so that you can put it into your timeline.

*These are just ideas. Get creative and come up with your own ideas as well!

THIS PROJECT IS DUE ________________________*No extended deadlines or late projects will be graded!*

1. Go to the following link: http://timeline.verite.co/ andclickon “File Formats” in the top menu bar.

2. Select the button “Google Doc Template”

Page 6: A Year in the life of Daisy and Hoke · 2013. 6. 3. · Explanation of parts Homepage/Explanation of Site: This is where you tell visitors what to see on your site and where to find

Step 4: Share(completed by webmaster ONLY)

1. Once the form is renamed, click Sharebutton.

2. Enter the student @apps.hopkinsschools.orgemails of your group members AND YOURTEACHER

3. Make sure to make them OWNERS of thesite.

4. Change access from Private to Public on theWeb.

Step 5: How to add your research to the spreadsheet

1. The webmaster should designate who does what and assign rows (minimum of four) in thespreadsheet, to group members, before beginning. The dates DO NOT need to go in order;the script will automatically sort them in chronological order for you. For example, assignone person to “Sports” rows 1-4, and assign another person to “Politics” and have them dorows 5-8, etc.

2. It is OK to add rows. Click the “Add” button at the bottom of the page to add more.

3. Notice that there are already words on the spreadsheet. You are over-writing thisexisting spreadsheet to make it your own. You must erase what is written andtype directly into your rows.

4. One row will be done by the entire group. You will write the word ‘title’ in the “Type”column I. This row should contain your names and welcome visitors to your timeline. Themedia in this row should be a picture that encapsulates the big idea of your year. This rowcan be put anywhere on the spreadsheet. The date for the row will not matter, it will be thefirst slide that people see when they look at your timeline.

Page 7: A Year in the life of Daisy and Hoke · 2013. 6. 3. · Explanation of parts Homepage/Explanation of Site: This is where you tell visitors what to see on your site and where to find

Timeline sectionsEach event on your timeline includes 6 parts:

● Date(s) – Do your best to recover a ‘start date’ and ‘end date’ for your event. They can bethe same date. You can approximate.

● Headline – The model for this is “Your topic – the event headline” example: “Politics –LBJ elected US President”

● Text – Explain your event from the perspective of Hoke and/or Daisy.● Media – This is where you paste the URL to what you are linking. This needs to be the

exact URL that links directly to the photo, video, etc. If you search for your media on theiPad, make sure to check the URL on the laptop. The iPad will give you a URL for amobile site (example: http://m.youtube.com/...) and you’ll need to change it.

● Media Credit – Where did you get this piece of media? Cite your source. Again,www.google.com is not an acceptable source.

● Media Caption – What is your event? Explain what the audience is seeing/ listening to.● Media Thumbnail – ignore this
