Lots of events and changes are
happening in Edgewood! In March,
we had our very first and very
successful yard sale held on the
grounds of St. Jerome’s Church and
School. Many residents enjoyed
socializing with other neighbors while
selling their belongings. We had a
bake sale table as well as a table of
donations for our Civic Association to
sell for profit. Edgewood Civic
Association made over $500. Any
unsold items were donated and picked
up by the Vietnam Veterans.
Edgewood volunteers are continuing to
participate in Green Your Routine to
earn money for our neighborhood. We
recently participated at the Fort
Lauderdale St. Patrick’s Day Parade,
and in the month of April, GYR
volunteers will be volunteering at The
Butterfly Garden at Snyder Park and
Household Hazardous Waste disposal
event.
The big Household Hazardous Waste
event on April 8, at Mills Pond Park
(2201 NW 9th Avenue, Fort
Lauderdale). At this HHW, in addition
to the list below, there will be medicine
take back and shredding of documents.
Also, the Salvation Army will be
accepting any clothes or other items
you wish to donate. All you need do is
bring your driver’s license to prove
that you are a Fort Lauderdale resident.
The hours are from 8:00 am until 2:00
pm. (See more details on page 2!)

Animal Cruelty
When we talk about compassion, it’s usu-
ally towards other human beings – family,
friends, neighbors, co-workers, and
strangers.
Many of us have pets now or have had pets
in the past, and we can and should always
show compassion towards animals. Un-
fortunately, someone in our neighborhood
did not show compassion towards a neigh-
bor’s cat. Her cat was brutally hurt; which
resulted in the cat dying. This was a hor-
rific and sick act on a defenseless animal.
The person or persons have not been
caught. If anyone has information on who
may have done this to her cat, please con-
tact us. Please don’t forget to keep a close
eye on your animals.

Fort Lauderdale Cares Day — April 29, 2017
The 2017 Fort Lauderdale Cares Day will take place on Saturday, April 29, 2017. This is a day when you
can join your friends and neighbors for a few hours to help beautify our neighborhood. In doing so, not only
do you improve the looks of our neighborhood, but the Edgewood Civic Association earns points (which
translates to dollars) that can be used to purchase services and items for our neighborhood. The more people
who participate, the more points we’ll receive. There will be a signup sheet at the Edgewood Civic Associa-
tion meeting on April 5 at 7:30pm, in the clubhouse. You may also call 954-494-2267 or send an email to
[email protected] to add your name to the list. We’ll have more details, when you sign up.

A New Home in Edgewood — WOW!
February 17, 2017, was a great morning here in Edgewood.
On this beautiful morning, many were present to cut the
ribbon to celebrate a new home for our neighbors, John and
Debbie Burgess, who live at 1408 SW 33rd Court. Our
Commissioner for District 4, Romney Rogers, was present
for this special occasion. Mr. Jonathan Brown, Avis Wil-
kinson, and the staff of the City’s Housing and Community
Development Division, along with the contractors involved
in building this new home were present, as well as our
Board members Wendy Wills and Jay Shlimbaum, from the
Edgewood Civic Association.
The Housing and Community Development Division ad-
ministers and coordinates the HOME Investment Partner-
ships Program with financial assistance provided by the
U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Department.
Through this program, the City was able to demolish and reconstruct this new two-bedroom and two bathroom home
for John and Debbie Burgess with a substantial grant through the HOME program.
The living space of their new home is 891 square feet, the garage is 245 square feet, and the covered entrance is 57
square feet for a total of 1,193 square feet.
It is important for our neighbors here to know that the City’s Housing Rehabilitation Program provides funding for the
demolition and reconstruction of a home, if the cost to rehabilitate the home exceeds 50% of the assessed value of the
property. Upon inspection of the previous home on this property, the City determined that it would be more feasible to
reconstruct this home.
Rehabilitation/Replacement Program is part of a comprehensive neighborhood revitalization strategy to preserve and
improve the City’s residential neighborhoods. This program is designed to address substandard housing in the City of
Fort Lauderdale. If anyone is interested in participating in the Housing Rehabilitation Program in the Edgewood
Neighborhood should contact Ms. Wilkinson, our Housing Programs Administrator.
Congratulations and best wishes in your new home!
