Meet our B’not Sheirut!

Farber’s very own Nursery 2 instructor is starting her year off

right! Morah Shelly Tarockoff was awarded this year’s Emery and

Diane Klein Award for Excellence in Jewish Teaching. Shelly

received the award from Jeff Lasday and Harvey Leven from

the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. Mazel Tov

Shelly on an honor much deserved!

A new school year means another group of fantastic, energetic Bachorim and B’not Sheirut. Join us in welcoming our new B’not Sheirut, Leah Halllerstein and Hadas Neuman. Leah (19), is one of five, from Modi’in and conducted her first year of Sheirut Le’umi at Beit Elezraki, an emergency shelter for children. Hadas (19), has two siblings, is from Ramat Gan and taught Jewish Heritage at a non-religious elementary school in Modi’in for her first year of Sheirut Le’umi service. Both girls are excited to get to know the Farber students, staff and our wonderful Detroit community! The girls are living at Howard & Michal Korman’s house in Southfield.

We are pleased to welcome a number of new faces to our Farber family. Our new hires have already made their mark on our students and fellow faculty and have settled in as crucial members of our educational team. Help us wish them a warm welcome when you see them in our hallways!

Dvar Torah—Parshat Eikev

August 26, 2016 /22 Av 5776 Parshat Eikev / Candle Lighting 7:58 p.m. / Havdalah 8:58 p.m.

Parshat Eikev has some of the most fundamental messages in the Torah about education. Most well known is the section we recite as the second paragraph of Shema in which we are enjoined to teach Torah to our children. However, earlier in the Parsha, the following, more complex vision of education is presented. Moshe describes G-d’s approach to educating and instructing the Jewish people during their travels in the desert: “And [G-d] afflicted you and let you go hungry, and then fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your forefathers know, so that He would make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but rather by whatever comes forth from the mouth of the Lord does man live…. You shall know in your heart, that just as a man chastises his son, so does the Lord, your G-d, chastise you.” G-d wanted to teach the Jewish people a hard lesson - that physical belongings are not everything and there are more important things in life than one’s next meal. In order to teach them this lesson, G-d employs a fascinating combination of tactics. G-d afflicts the people, then cares for them; G-d lets them go hungry, then feeds them. Moshe compares this combination of tactics to the way in which a parent chastises his son with criticism in order to help the

child learn and grow. Why are these tactics effective? If the people were in need of care, why afflict them, and if they were in need of punishment, why coddle them? The answer is we learn from difficult circumstances, but we need support in order to cope with them. Learning through difficulties initiates a process of growth. Growth is difficult. It involves change. It involves leaving a comfortable path in order to develop beyond one’s current abilities. An educator or parent often needs to push a student or child to do things with which he or she is not yet comfortable. But when one pushes too far, a child might not be emotionally capable of making that leap. As educators and parents we must push our children forward while assuring them we have their backs. We must challenge them with new tasks while comforting them. In this way, our children will have the security they need to take risks, make mistakes, and grow. I wish us all a school year of growth in a warm and loving environment which encourages us to try and assures us we will be safe in case we stumble.

Professional Development

This year, Farber is fortunate to introduce a number of new academic programs generously sponsored by parent and community members. The first of these programs, a guest speaker for our staff professional development session, took place last Thursday when Dr. Alison Feit addressed our faculty on helping students navigate through contemporary social issues with the guidance of a Torah perspective. Dr. Feit discussed how to develop and maintain emotionally sound relationships with students, how to communicate effectively when addressing emotionally charged issues and how to properly guide students when faced with adverse situations. We would like to wish a special thank you to Yoni and Deborah Apap for sponsoring Dr. Feit’s visit.

A special message from David Tanzman: I would like to send a heartfelt Todah Rabbah for the Shiva meals, tributes

and donations made on the occasion of the passing of my beloved wife, Lottie. There are no words to properly express the thanks for all of the acts of kindness and messages of condolences. It is a comfort to know that the

Farber/Akiva family has been a source of Nechama and Chizuk at this time of sadness. May G-d bless you all.
