Hey dee ho music concerts and birthday parties
Concerts and parties have similar requirements and need to have a different focus than our regular sessions. Concerts are ENTERTAINMENT as opposed to EDUCATION.I have included the listings for the disks you already have so that you can use the props, disks etc that you already have. The structure and format of the session may be different but the themes are basically the same.CONCERTS
Concerts can take many forms
1. for a small kinder group of 3 year olds where the felt board and the story are as important as the songs, dances and instruments
2. for a large group of kinder children where there is less emphasis on the story and felts and more time spent on the dances and activities.
3. for large groups of mixed aged children at public venues – community centres and libraries etc.
Main points to note:1 logistics. You really need to have a clear idea of where you want the
people/ children to sit and set the room up accordingly. People need to be told up front what is expected from them and then they will appreciate and respect your efforts.
2 Each time you attempt a new activity e.g the instruments etc you need to tell them what is about to happen, lay some ground rules and then do it. It also helps to recap what you have done after you have done it. i.e. tell them what is happening, while its happening and after it’s happening.
3 Remember that unlike your regular sessions most times the children won’t have met you before so you need to start gentle, warm them up and then have a lot of fun
4 Remember that this is a concert and dress accordingly. It may be appropriate that you wear your uniform in some instances but some themes really require a COSTUME. Everyone has their own style, but keep in mind that you need colour and a fun attitude for children – the brighter the better. Beach day, PYJAMA PARTY and Fairies and make believe characters are just some that require a special outfit.
5 Always take things like the LYCRA, limbo stick, hoola hoops and rainbow ring in case you get an opportunity to use them.
The main structure of a hey dee ho concert is as follows1. break the ice song – usually something they know. A song that
you can customise to suit the theme. “Happy and you know it” is a good one. We also have an original song called “what I like to do” if you feel this is appropriate.
2. The theme section. This section contains a number of songs that make up the theme of the concert. Currently we have 8 themes we offer on a regular basis but it is possible to take any of our weekly programs and adapt it to a concert. The favourites are: Teddy Bear’s picnic, Boom boom ain’t it great to be Crazy?, Pyjama Party, Beach Party, Santa in Toyland, Christmas (traditional), Dinosaurs, Baby day and Creepy Crawlies.
Copyright hey dee ho music 2007 2
3. There are also some special themes which include signing or languages which are very popular with kindergartens
a. – “signing” concerts where signs are used in conjunction with our regular programs- this can be done in – “Take you riding”, “Creepy Crawlies”, “Old Macdonald” and “Food”
b. – multi-cultural programs “Puppets around the world”
4. the next section of the concert is usually the dance or main activity part. Popular and traditional children’s songs and dances are used in this section
5. finish off with the instruments – this is a lot of fun and rounds off the day on a high note
6. Usually Hokey Pokey is a good dance to finish off with – especially if there are parents present. Insist on the parents joining in – this is often a very difficult thing to do but very worthwhile when you can do it.
7. Depending on the venue and the situation you can sit them down again and recap the day – what have we done etc and then sing hey dee ho and say goodbye.
NB: sometimes we may change the order of the concert structure to suit the situation e.g. points 2 & 4 may be swapped around. REMEMBER: these concerts are charged out at twice the price of our normal hey dee ho sessions (because they are expensive business to get.) and therefore need to be larger than our regular sessions.
Hey dee ho music Birthday party concerts
The majority of these are booked through people who have first hand knowledge of ‘hey dee ho music” So whilst the birthday child will be familiar with us, most of the other children won’t be – so you need to make allowances for this. Depending on the ages of the children parents may or may not be involved – so be prepared for all scenarios.Present – we provide a present for the birthday child and some thing small for the participants – a sticker, a stamp, a small sweet. It is a good idea to leave free session vouchers for all the participants. One year old partyUnless this is a personal favour for a regular “hey dee ho music” participant it is not recommended to do parties for this age group. The success of this depends solely on the involvement of parents. Most parents who attend parties are not prepared to sit down, sing and dance at this time. To them it is a social occasion and it is very frustrating trying to run a program when everyone is talking and basically paying no attention to the activities. If you do decide to run one, make it very clear from the outset what you expect from everyone. Ask the host to tell everyone before they arrive that they will be expected to sit on the floor and participate with the children and then reiterate that before you start. Use as many songs from the baby’s disk as possible – you can spend a lot of time on the instruments and get the parents up dancing with the children. Normally this party would not last more than 30 minutes Two year old party
Copyright hey dee ho music 2007 3
Whilst it is still preferable to have the all parents involved in this party you can get by with a couple adult helpers. Fun themes for this age group can be Teddy bear’s picnic, Baby day, We’re going to the Zoo or Old Macdonald’s Farm
Three and four year old Parties
Up to 15 Children can attend with one other adult in attendance at this point. Imaginative themes and dress up opportunities work well at this age. Beach Party, Fairies and Make Believe Characters, Creepy Crawlies or maybe Boom, Boom ain’t it great to be Crazy? A lot will depend on how many children attend and the mix between boys and girls. If you are good at face painting you can offer this as an extra special option – this can take a long time so make up some basic quick options – flowers or stars
Five and six year old parties
At this age boys will want a very different party to girls – both will need to be active but you will find that you have to tailor the songs and activities to the birthday boy/girl. “What I like to do”, “Dinosaurs”, “Beach Day” or “Simon Says” can be good themes. Be prepared to do a lot of dances like the limbo, or use the lycra, hula hoops, rainbow ring and the instruments.
POINTS TO REMEMBER All themes need to be “larger than life” and it is a good idea to take a
microphone. Make sure there is power available Wherever possible conduct the party INSIDE. It is difficult to maintain the
volume of the music and interest of the children when you are outside. There are often too many other distractions and the wind can your voice away – all this reduces the effectiveness of your performance.
Ask that no food is served during your performance. It is embarrassing to be left by yourself singing the Hokey pokey while everyone rushes to the table and grabs a party pie.
The ideal time to offer the hey dee ho music concert is about 15 – 30 minutes after everyone arrives – say 2pm people arrive, 2.30 concert, 3pm food, 4pm go home
DRESS: make sure you dress up for the occasion. You are not an educator at this time – be as flamboyant as you like. Stay within the theme of the day – if you are doing the Fairy Party – dress as a Fairy!
Be prepared: take other disks and props. You never know who will be there or what their interests are so take some favourite puppets and be prepared to do some popular songs and dances regardless of the theme you are doing.
Keep in mind that most of the children will not be familiar with hey dee ho music and so you will need to keep telling them what to do – time to sit down, where to sit, how to take the instruments, where to walk and so on.
THEMES: you can basically use any of the current themes as they are – just add a song that all children will know as an opener to break the ice. “If you’re happy and you know it” is a good one and works for pretty much all ages. Once the children feel comfortable you can take the concert anywhere you like – using most any song you like.
Feel free to adjust the program to the mood of the children. Often it is best to leave the instruments til last as it is hard to get them to settle

down after this – if you are losing their attention be prepared to bring out the rainbow ring or the lycra.
Sing happy Birthday at the end of the session – after the instruments or Hokey Pokey.

hey dee ho music Dance party (also option for Signing Dance Party)
This concert is one that works for many occasions. It is great for large community events and family fun days where you will have a large number of children of all different ages. There are no puppets to give out and in some cases no instruments either. Large groups of children (with parents in attendance) in an enclosed area such as a kinder or hall, present suitable occasions to use instruments and or puppets as you can be sure to get them back. If you are conducting a concert on a stage in front of an oval or some other open space it is not advisable to use props or instruments

Well I think we should do a song for everyone – lets start with a song for the 1 year olds – can I ask all you bigger kids to help me to sing for the little ones.
Twinkle twinkle little star
use the original actions that all children know for this song – even though we know the signs for this song I think it is too confusing for children – especially when we are only going to see them for a short time (i.e. a concert as opposed a class)
hands up everyone…
Twinkle twinkle little star, how I wonder what you areup above the world so high like a diamond in the skytwinkle twinkle little star, how I wonder what you arerepeat
that was fantastic wasn’t it? What do you think we should do now? – a song for the 2 year olds – who is 2 years old here today

After the Hokey pokey do Rock a bye your bear
Thank you so much for singing and dancing with me today – what did we do ? (quickly recap the day)
NB: this concert can be adapted for use as a signing concert – teaching numbers and colours and a few animals – monkeys etc. if you have done this you need to recap the signs you have used at this point.
We have sung songs for all the children here from one to seven ( sign this as you go) and we learned some signs didn’t we – banana and monkey and ……
Now I think it is time to day goodbye – bye thank you for signing and dancing for us thank you every body –

CONCERTS - Special themes/dress up days
Baby day - This is a good body awareness program for littlies – suitable for 2 – 4 year olds
Creepy Crawlies this is a favourite session – one that is good for demos, birthday parties and also concerts – it can be adapted to suit all ages.
Teddy Bear’s Picnic – suitable for toddlers this is an evergreen theme. Everyone should bring their teddy to take part in this program. This is a good theme for large groups as there are no props or puppets to hand out – the audience provide the props.
Fairies and make believe characters – this is a classic birthday party theme. You should dress up and usually all the children come dressed up as well. Be prepared to ad lib and sing songs about the characters that the children come dressed as.
Dinosaurs – a favourite for boys this is great fun – the felt board is a must in this program as you need more visuals to make it interesting.
Beach Day – this is a lot of fun. Please wear shorts or other appropriate clothes, zinc cream on your nose, whatever. Make this as much fun as possible. Get all the children, carers etc to dress up. Give your centres a flyer to advertise the next weeks’ program. These will be emailed to you.Copyright hey dee ho music 2007 10
Bush Day – this is less spectacular that beach day but it is a nice touch to wear jeans and country type gear.
CHRISTMAS – please wear a Santa hat and anything else you think – ear rings, tinsel etc. For parent and child classes – PLEASE CHECK WITH PARENTS TO SEE WHICH PROGRAM THEY PREFER – TRADITIONAL OR CHRISTMAS
In most cases we would do Santa in Toyland at child care centres. Please check that this theme is okay. Some centres don’t like the mention of SANTA .

Baby Day. Concert/party
This week the babies do EVERYTHING. If a child does not have a baby it will be difficult for them to join in. you will need o make sure that there are enough babies, teddies etc so that everyone has one. This party is likely to be for 2 year olds and in an intimate environment so you may like to use the felt board for more visual effect.
SECTION 1 START SONGS /INTRO
“I see you’ve all got someone special with you today. I brought my baby along too. Let’s shake hands with our babies and sing.”
Hey Dee Ho and How do You Do x3how do you do this morning

Swinging, swinging now we go up, now we go downSwinging, swinging baby goes up, baby comes down
“Oh that is so much fun – let’s do it again.” Repeat the song.

This is the way we feed the baby, feed the baby, feed the babyThis is the way we feed the baby early in the morning.
“Oh he is still hungry we’d better give him some more!” Sing the song again but as it finishes sniff and say “uh oh what’s that smell?” hold up the baby and say, “I think my baby has got a dirty nappy – we’d better change it.” Take the bibs off the babies and collect the spoons. Lay the baby on the floor and pretend to change the nappy.

SECTION 3 - WALK AROUND THE ROOM SONGS
This would be a good time to get them up and moving – children can only sit still for so long and they will be getting restless by this time.
SECTION 5 - ACTION /FEATURE SONGS “Oh look my baby has woken up and… oh dear… is starting to cry. Is your baby crying? Let’s give our babies a massage to calm them down.”

Round and round and round we goSpinning and turning
Sometimes fast and sometimes slowRound and round and round we go
SECTION 6 – DANCES/ACTION SONGS
You will need to choose songs to suit the ages of the children – bring your party dance disk with you in case you get “requests”. Otherwise Hide your eyes and Dorothy are good options.
SING HAPPY BIRTHDAY FOR THE BIRTHDAY CHILD AND GIVE THEM THE HEY DEE HO PRESENT. IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO LEAVE A LITTLE GIFT FOR EACH CHILD – JUST A SMALL SWEET OR STICKER OR COLOURING SHEET ALONG WITH SOMETHING WITH OUR NAME ON IT – A FREE VOUCHER FOR A CLASS OR SOME OTHER SPECIAL OFFER.
SECTION 7 FINISH SONGS
“Come and sit down with me and let’s see what we’ve done today. We played lots of games with our babies didn’t we? Tell me what we did”. Go through the songs pointing out the felts. Speak quietly and calmly to bring the children “down” after the excitement.“Thank you for bringing your baby today and singing with me. Let’s sing once more and then you can wave goodbye to me.”

Aussie Bush Day. Concert option
This is more likely to be a concert theme at a child care centre or kindergarten. Make sure you look the part –dress in your bush clothes – jeans, hat shirt etc. in this type of group it would be a god idea to take the felt board.
SECTION 1 START SONGS /INTRO
SECTION 2 - THEME OF THE DAY
Put up the tree and sun felt and as the music starts you can say:“It’s such a great day – let’s go for a walk through the bush and see what we can see.”To the tune of the farmer in the dell:
We’re walking through the bush x 2Hi ho the Derry oh
We’re walking through the bush
This can be used as a recurring theme or you can leave it out depending on how much time you have and how old the children are etc.
“We are going to see many different creatures as we go on our walk today and everyone is going to help me.” Hand out ALL the puppets at this time divide the puppets up evenly between the children. - frogs- galahs- koalas- kangaroos- kookaburras
There are only 6 of each so talk a little about each as you hand them out and then ask “Hands up who has a koala puppet, hands up who has a kangaroo puppet.” and so on so that they realise what they have.“I need you to listen closely so you can help me when we get to the song about your puppet. Where were we, oh yes walking through the bush”.Sing the song again and at the end nod your head up and down as if you were watching a kangaroo jump up and down. “What can I see?” Take out the kangaroo felt. “Yes that’s right now who’s got a kangaroo?”
How does a Kangaroo go, dear me does anybody knowHow does a Kangaroo go, a jump a jump the whole day long.

”Ooh listen to that ooooo aaaaa!” Make a kookaburra sound. “What makes that sound – yes it’s a kookaburra hands up who has the kookaburras.”
Kookaburra sits in the old gum treeMerry merry king of the bush is he

hey dee ho and how do you do 1Songs in italics are for parent and child classes only
CREEPY CRAWLIES - … If you are using this session as a concert or demo – that is for children that you haven’t met before, it is a good idea to start off with a well known song like if you’re happy and you know it – to make them feel comfortable “ Show me a happy face – great now show me a sad face – what about a sleepy face … or maybe an angry face. You know something, I think I like the happy face – show me again……”
If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands x 2If you’re happy and you know it then you really oughta show it
If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands
If you’re happy and you know it blow a kiss x 2If you’re happy and you know then you really oughta show it
If you’re happy and you know it blow a kiss
If you’re happy and you know it shout HOORAY x 2If you’re happy and you know then you really oughta show it
If you’re happy and you know shout HOORAY
“Today we’re going on a pretend walk around the garden – it’s a beautiful day” put up the tree, sun, house flower felt and talk about where you are going to walk. Refer to the colours of your house and so on making the signs for the colours as you do so
“Sitting on your bottom with your feet out the front “
We’re walking round the garden, the garden, the gardenWe’re walking round the garden, to see what we can see
“What can you see – mm we may have to walk a bit further down past the house” repeat the song but before you get to the end of the last line start shooing away an imaginary fly
“Shoo SHOO oh yuk a horrible black fly” put up the fly felt “can you shoo the fly away with me – say SHOO FLY”
Shoo fly don’t bother me x 3I don’t want your company
Copyright hey dee ho music 2007 38
“Has it gone? NO? Well we’d better do that again” Repeat. With the older children you can get the children to repeat the song in a HIGH – NOT LOUD voice to get them to start being aware of the pitching of their voices.
“Oh that’s better let’s keep walking”
Repeat walking round the garden
“ Oh what can I see now – something green that likes to live on a leaf and sort of goes like this” – make a caterpillar motion up your arm - wait for the children to guess and then put up the caterpillar felt and invite the children up to come and get a caterpillar for their finger. Practise “creeping” the caterpillar up your arm and warn against the ones that tickle. If the children are too little the parents may use the caterpillar puppet and creep it up the children’s arms
How does a caterpillar go, dear me does anybody knowHow does a caterpillar go on a cabbage leaf the whole day long
This is a short song and can be done a number of times – up the arm, down the leg up the tummy, up Mummy’s arm etc. for children 2 ½ up you may choose to do this next song.“Ok everyone, show me your thumb - I need you to take your caterpillar and put it on your thumb just like this” wait for them to do this. “Now cover your caterpillar with your hands – what’s it doing in there? – have a look - is it hiding? – I think it is”Say this rhyme
What’s the caterpillar doing in its cocoon?I think its learning how to fly.
He’s slowly changing shape and soonWill come out a bright butterfly
Show the children how to make a butterfly out of their caterpillar then repeat the rhyme again. Link your thumbs together and wriggle your fingers in a flying motion.
“How does your butterfly fly?” put up the butterfly felt
How does a butterfly go? Dear me does anybody know? How does a butterfly go from flower to flower the whole day through
Repeat
“Ok let’s say goodbye to our butterflies it’s time to go for another walk around the garden” collect up the puppets and repeat Walking round the garden.
“What can I see now – something black and hairy spinning a web” put up the spider felt.
Incy Wincy spider climbed up the water spoutDown came the rain and washed poor Incy out
Out came the sunshine and dried up all the rainThen Incy Wincy spider climbed up the spout again.

“Let’s keep walking” repeat walking round the garden
“Do you know what I can see? NOTHING! But I can hear “ribbet ribbet” – yes it’s a frog –in fact it’s four green and spotty frogs” put up the frog felt. “Show me your pointer finger – I have a frog for you all” hand out the frog finger puppets.
Four green a spotty frogs sat on a mossy logEating some most delicious bugs yum yum
One jumped into a pool where it was nice and coolNow there are three green spotty frogs
Three green and spotty frogs etc
Encourage the children to sing the YUM YUMs
In some rooms you can use the frog puppets to sing the bean bag frog song. This is a great listening exercise.
Bean Bag Frog Song
Jump your little frog from side to side x 3And now get ready to STOP!
Pass your little frog around your middle x 3And now get ready to STOP!
Give a little jump from hand to hand x 3And now get ready to STOP!
Take your little frog for a fly in the airSee your little frog go flying everywhere
Flying, flying around and aroundAnd now get ready to STOP!
As you finish collecting up the frog puppets, place the busy bee sicker on your finger and buzz it around – make it land on your nose and then
Say this rhyme
What do you suppose a bee sat on my noseAnd then what do you think? He gave me a wink and said
I beg your pardon I thought you were the garden
“What a silly bee – let’s all have bees on our noses” place a bee on everyone’s nose including carers and parents- say the rhyme again – getting them to practise winking with either eye.
How does your bee go? Show me how it can fly around your head.
How does a bussssy bee go, dear me does anybody knowHow does a bussssy bee go, from flower to flower the whole day long

hey dee ho music Boom Boom ain't it Great to be Crazy?
NB: Once children get to around 3 – 4 they start to develop a sense of humour and really love this program. When you are singing to younger children you don't need to try and make it as funny – just enjoy singing the songs together.
"Ok everyone, show me a happy face, oh yes beautiful, what about a sad face? What about a cross angry face? Ooh that's a bit scary! What about a silly face? Oh you are all very funny! I've got a song just for you."
Boom boom ain't it great to be crazy x 2Giddy and foolish the whole day through
Boom boom ain't it great to be crazy
"Today we have lots of songs that are silly or funny – show me one finger and one thumb."
One finger one thumb keep moving x 3Let's all be merry and bright
One finger one thumb one arm keep moving x 3Let's all be merry and bright
One finger one thumb one arm one leg keep moving x 3Let's all be merry and bright
One finger one arm one leg one nod of the head keep moving x 3Let's all be merry and bright
Don't sing the whole song for the very young children – maybe just stop after one finger thumb and arm.Repeat ‘Boom boom’. Go straight into it. Use it as a link to each song. Put up the felt for Mr Clicketty (it is the same one as Dr Kinckerbocker and Aiken Drum)."Look who we've got here – a very silly man. I need someone brave to come up and help me." Get up a child and show them how to play the ladle – everyone else can clap.
Oh there came a man to our town to our town to our townThere came a man to our town and his name was Aiken Drum
ChorusAnd he played up on a ladle, a ladle a ladle
And he played upon a ladle and is name was Aiken Drum

And his hat was made of swiss cheese of swiss cheese of swiss cheeseAnd his hat was made of swiss cheese and his name was Aiken Drum
Chorus
Or ‘Mr. Clicketty’. If you have a session where the children can understand ECHOES then this is a perfect one to do. You sing the song and get the children to copy you.

"Who is the next silly person?" Put up the frog felt. "What sound do frogs make? – This is a song about some frogs who say something very different to that – they sing la de da de da! I have a frog for your finger." Frog puppets are optional here as the actions are great fun. Small children will need a puppet.
Der Glumpf went the little green frog one dayDer Glumpf went the little green frog
Der Glumpf went the little green frog one dayAnd the frog went glumpf glumpf glumpfBut we all know frogs go la de da de da
La de da de da, la de da de daBut we all know frogs go la de da de da
La de da de da, la de da de daWe all know frogs go la de da de daThey don't go glumpf glumpf glumpf
Repeat, then collect up the frogs – encourage everyone to stay seated until you come to them. This is a good opportunity to use our new language – when you hand out the puppets get the children to say thank you in the language of the day and when you collect the puppets they can say goodbye to them. This is a very simple way of reinforcing the languages.
Repeat ‘Boom boom ain’t it great to be crazy’.
Put up the Bananas in Pyjamas felt. “What’s this? Bananas in Pyjamas – have you ever seen anything so silly?” Hand out the puppets to the very young children.
Bananas in Pyjamas are coming down the stairsBananas in Pyjamas are coming down in pairsBananas in Pyjamas are chasing teddy bears
Cos on Tuesdays they all try to catch them unawares.
Repeat.
This is a song you can do without music’ – it is a great way to demonstrate piano and forte with the older children.- and also the concepts of fast and slow.

SECTION 5 - ACTION /FEATURE SONGS
“Oh here is that special box again – this is the most special present. We’ll have to keep it for later. Here is someone that’s really important – one of Santa’s most important helpers – the TRUTH fairy! This is the person that goes down and talks to all the children and do you know what she says?” Put up the fairy felt. You may choose to dress up one of the children in the fairy wings if you have them.
You’d better watch out you’d better not cryYou’d better not pout I’m telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to townHe’s making a list and checking it twice
He’s gonna find out who’s naughty and niceSanta Claus is coming to town

Santa Claus is coming to town
“So tell me Santa how are you going to get these toys delivered all around the world? Do you drive a very fast car? NO! Do you fly an aeroplane? No. Well how do you do it? In a sleigh! And who pulls the sleigh for you? Rudolf!” Choose someone to be Rudolf and get them to wear the antlers and a red nose.
Come Dasher come Dancer come Prancer and VixenComet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen
But do you recall the most famous reindeer of all
Rudolf the red nosed reindeer had a very shiny noseAnd if you ever saw it you would even say it glowed
All of the other reindeer used to laugh and call him namesThey never let poor Rudolf join in any reindeer games
Then one foggy Christmas eve, Santa came to sayRudolf with your nose so bright won’t you drive my sleigh tonight?
Then how the reindeer loved him and the shouted out with gleeRudolf the red nosed reindeer you’ll go down in history
“I think it would be good if we all had a shiny nose like Rudolf don’t you?” Put a red sticker on everyone’s nose and then sing it again.
In sessions with parents or concerts it is good to decorate the Christmas tree. On occasions when you are going to use the Christmas tree –
“Well Santa what do you do with the presents when you go to everyone’s house? You put them under the Christmas tree. We have a tree right here, what do you think? Is it beautiful? It’s not? What’s wrong? Oh, it needs some decorations! Will you help me decorate it?”Copyright hey dee ho music 2007 70

THEME OF THE DAY
“Well it’s a very special time let’s all clap hands.” To the tune of Jingle Bells:
Clap your hands clap your handsChristmas time has come
Clap your hands clap your handsFun for everyone oh
RepeatShake your hands/ stamp your feet etc roll your arms
“Does anyone know the story of Christmas? Well a very long time ago there was a little boy called Jesus. When he was born he didn’t have a bed or a cot or anything like that so his parents had to take him into the stable where the all the animals lived and they made a bed for him out of straw. Let’s pretend we are holding a baby like the baby Jesus”.
Away in a manger no room for a bed (cradle the baby)The little lord Jesus lay down his sweet head (Hands to head like
sleeping)The stars in the bright sky look down where he lay (twinkle fingers)
The little lord Jesus asleep on the hay
“Now it seems that this baby was to become very famous and a long way away there were some farmers who were looking after their sheep. Do you know what you call a farmer who looks after sheep? They are shepherds. Put your hand up to your eye and let’s pretend to look off into the distance – we’re keeping an eye on our sheep.”To the tune of Mary had a Little Lamb:
The shepherds watched their sheep at night x 3The shepherds watched their sheep at night
When down an angel came.

I usually stop the sequence here and say something like “and weren’t they surprised! – do you know what happened next?”
The Angel said the babe is born x 3The angel said the babe is born in Bethlehem today
“The shepherds looked up and saw a bright star in the sky. I wonder if it is the same star we know a song about?”
Twinkle, Twinkle little StarHow I wonder what you areUp above the world so highLike a diamond in the skyTwinkle Twinkle little StarHow I wonder what you are
“Well, I think it might be the same star. Anyway the shepherds followed the star all the way to Bethlehem where the baby Jesus was. Do you know what else? There were some other people who had heard about Jesus and they saw the star as well. Tell me who has got a little baby brother or sister at home? What happened when they were born? Did people bring them presents? Well that’s just what these people did. I’m talking about three wise men who also followed the star and gave Baby Jesus lots of presents.” Put your hands up again and let’s sing our song a little differently this time.
Twinkle twinkle little starThree wise men came from a farCame with gifts to give the King
Came with songs of praise for himTwinkle twinkle little star
Three wise men came from afar
“Well now let’s see . . . there seems to be quite a few people who visited the baby. There’s the shepherds and their sheep and of course the cattle in the stable, the three wise men and of course his Mum and Dad. It seems that there are some other people – angels! How many angels do you think there would be – at least ten.”Who would like to be an angel with me?” Get ten little angels to come up the front and put a tinsel halo on their head.
One little two little three little angelsFour little five little six little angels
Seven little eight little nine little angels10 little angels in Bethlehem
(10 little Angles at Christmas time)
“Well angels, it looks like everyone is here to see the Baby.”

“So tell me Santa how are you going to get these toys delivered al around the world? Do you drive a very fast car? NO! Do you fly an aeroplane? No? Well how do you do it? In a sleigh, and who pulls the sleigh for you? Rudolf!” Choose someone to be Rudolf and get them to wear the antlers and a red nose.
Come Dasher come Dancer come Prancer and VixenComet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen
But do you recall the most famous reindeer of allRudolf the red nosed reindeer had a very shiny noseAnd if you ever saw it you would even say it glowed
On occasions when you are going to use the Christmas tree – “Well Santa what do you do with the presents when you go to everyone’s house? You put them under the Christmas tree. We have a tree right here – what do you think? Is it beautiful? It’s not – what’s wrong? Oh, it needs some decorations. Will you help me decorate it?”Hand out the decorations and get the children to decorate the tree.
