A warm welcome from Cargilfield! It has been a number of years since there has been an active Former Pupil Association here at Cargilfield. However, with the 150th Anniversary of the school's foundation on the horizon in 2023, we are keen to reconnect with as many former Cargilfield pupils, parents and families as possible to keep you up to date with our plans to celebrate this important moment in the school's history, as well as to give you news of former pupils' achievements and details of some of the exciting developments that have been happening at Cargilfield. We would love to share any news you have about what you have been up to since leaving Cargilfield, be that successes at school, university, career moves or 'hatches, matches and dispatches'! Opening of the new AstroturfPitchThe new Gillespie Pitch was opened inFebruary 2019. It is named in memory of twobrothers, Alexander Gillespie (1900-1903)and Thomas Gillespie (1900-1905), who bothwent on to Winchester College and then NewCollege, Oxford. They were killed in NorthernFrance during World War 1 and their namescan be found on our War Memorial in Chapelalongside the other 123 old boys and masterswho fell in the Great War. The pitch wasopened by Mr Tom Heap, BBC rural affairspresenter, and the great nephew of AlexanderGillespie. Click here for more photographs.

Opening of the Harper GowPitchThe Harper Gow Pitch was resurfaced on thesite of tennis courts that were built in memoryof Leonard Harper Gow. He was a boy atCargilfield from 1900 and Head Boy in 1905,so was a contemporary of the Gillespiebrothers; he then returned as a Governor ofthe school from 1927 to 1958. The new astroturf surface was opened in February by hisgrandson and Head Boy of Cargilfield in1968, also Leonard Harper Gow.

James WilsonAs a number of you will already know, JamesWilson, former Deputy Head at Cargilfielduntil his retirement in 2012, died suddenly inDecember last year. He was a much lovedformer colleague, a fine teacher and isremembered fondly by all those who knewhim. A large number of former pupils, parentsand current members of staff attended hisfuneral, and our thoughts remain with Angela,his wife, who was a long time Head ofClassics here.

Former Pupils' Hockey Match

In December, on the final afternoon ofthe Autumn Term, we welcomed back overforty former pupils to play in a hockey matchon the new astroturf. It was lovely to see somany familiar faces, and also a large numberof forms parents came along to watch too!Photos of the afternoon can be found here.We hope to make this an annual event andwill email out details of the 2019 FP hockeymatch soon.

Rosslyn Chapel ConcertWhat a wonderful concert of music andpoetry we enjoyed on March 19th In thehaunting surroundings of Rosslyn Chapelmade famous in Dan Brown’s book The DaVinci Code, the Chapel choir performed somelovely anthems interspersed with poetrywritten by the children inspired by our visitsearlier in the term as well as some poems byWordsworth, Keats and Shakespeare. Atruely memorable evening of music andspecial thanks to Dr Allsop, Mrs Alder and MrParker for all their hard work. Click here formore details.

Spring Term Hockey SuccessWith the new astroturf pitches up andrunning, the boys' hockey teams haveenjoyed great success during the SpringTerm. Both the U13 and U11 sides reachedthe IAPS National Finals, with the U13splaying down at Millfield and the U11s atRugby School. The U11 boys took inspirationfrom Lunjika, a former pupil of Cargilfield andnow in her final year at Rugby; she hasrepresented England Hockey at U16 leveland it has been lovely to welcome her back toCargilfield recently at our October half termhockey course where she did some coaching.With all girls and boys now playing hockey onastroturf every day, increased sportingopportunities for all the children has been awelcome addition to our games programme.

Visit of Vaughan TownhillIt was a pleasure to welcome Vaughan

Townhill back to Cargilfield towards the end ofthe Autumn Term to take a choir rehearsalbefore the Chapel Choir performed at HolyCross Church in Davidson's Mains whereVaughan is the organist. He was Director ofMusic here for 34 years but has continued tobe extremely busy in retirement, directingvarious choirs and orchestras in and aroundEdinburgh! There were a number of childrenof former pupils in the choir whom hehad taught when he was a teacher here, andhe much enjoyed his annual visit back to seeus.

New School Website andSocial MediaOur new school website was launched lastyear and has proved very popular. The newspage is updated daily and contains lotsof interesting articles about what is going onhere at Cargilfield, whilst there are alsofeatures from members of staff in a newTeaching and Learning blog. The newFormer Pupils' page has a section for FPnews, so we would love to hear what youhave been up to since leaving Cargilfield!

Goodbye, Mr Laver!After 14 years teaching Geography andleading the Outdoor Pursuits department hereat Cargilfield, we said farewell to Mr Laver atthe end of the Autumn Term as he decided toretire and spend more time with his familydown in Worcestershire. A huge number ofchildren have benefited from his love of thegreat outdoors, leading so many camps andexpeditions, organising the Pentland Round,going on Leavers' Camp as well as takingchildren kayaking and climbing every week toRatho. We wish him a very happy retirement,and he has already got a busy few monthsplanned with a trip to the Arctic beforeheading over to Japan to cheer on his

beloved Wales in the Rugby World Cup!

Old Boy in Melrose 7's Final!Edinburgh Accies reached the Final in thisyear's Melrose 7s in April, and they werecaptained by old boy Jamie Sole; also in theAccies' squad was our currentgraduate assistant, Will Stephen. They lost toLondon Scottish but performed very well upagainst a number of semi professional teamsfrom across the world playing at thebirthplace of the seven-a-side game.

80th Anniversary ofevacuation to Lawers HouseThis year is the 80th anniversary of theevacuation of Cargilfield to Lawers Housenear Comrie in Perthshire from 1939 to 1947,during the Second World War. We wouldlove to hear from any families who hadrelations who spent their time at Cargilfield atLawers, so please do contact us!

Former Pupils play forScotland U18 Ladies' HockeyWe were delighted to see that former pupilsEllie, now at Mary Erskine's, and Emma, nowat St George's, both played for the ScotlandU18 Ladies' Hockey side over the Easterweekend in a series of internationals againstWales. Max, now at Merchiston, played forthe U16 Scotland Boys' team too. It istremendous to see old boys and girls gaininginternational honours in hockey.

Tom Sole plays for Northants vPakistanFormer Pupil, Tom Sole, currently with acontract at Northants CC and also a ScotlandInternational, played against Pakistan in aOne Day match at the end of April as part ofthe visitors' warm up games before thissummer's ICC Cricket World Cup held inEngland. He scored some useful runs,

including an enormous 6. We look forward tofollowing his professional cricketing career.

Freddie plays in Eton v Harrowmatch at LordsGreat to see Freddie, an old boy of Cargilfield,playing cricket for Eton against Harrow in theannual fixture at Lord's at the end of May. He isthe last century maker at Cargilfield, reaching a100 for the 1stXI back in June 2014!

I think that he is the first old boy to play for Etonin the Harrow fixture at Lord's - Stan Shillingtonplayed for Harrow in the same match a fewyears ago - but we would be keen to discover ifany other Cargundians have played in thisfamous fixture before!

Lunjika plays for ScotlandU21sHaving played for various England age grouphockey sides, Lunjika has now set her sights onplaying for Scotland and having just finished atRugby School, she played for the Scotland U21ladies who won the Euro League 2, so winningthe Gold Medal and promotion to Euro League 1;she also scored two goals in the Final! Awonderful achievement.

James passes out ofSandhurst!Wonderful to hear that James Nisbet has recentlypassed out of The Royal Military AcademySandhurst and commissioned in to the ScotsGuards.

James moved on to Harrow before going toNewcastle University and then Sandhurst. At hisrecent Passing Out Parade, he was supported byfamily and friends, including lots of other old boysand girls from Cargilfield.

Cargilfield is a place where life long friends aremade!

Mounbatten biography writtenby Old BoyA fascinating and revealing biography about theMountbattens written by Andrew Lownie, an oldboy of Cargilfield, was published on August 22nd.Lord Mountbatten was formerly Chief of theDefence Staff, the last Viceroy of India and GreatUncle and Mentor to Prince Charles before beingassassinated by the IRA in August 1979.

Extracts have been published in The SundayTimes and Sunday Telegraph and make for veryinteresting reading.

Andrew is a literary agent and author and afterCargilfield he went on to Westminster Schoolthen Cambridge University.

Academic News!We were delighted to hear that AlexanderWallace (Glenalmond) achieved four A* in his ALevels and confirmed his place to readMathematics at Cambridge in addition to being

an organ scholar.

James Macnab (Fettes) and Marcus Fforde(Oundle) both got places at Cambridge andOxford respectively due to their outstanding ALevel results.

Also, Gordon Porter (Glenalmond) got a FirstClass Honours degree in Business Managementfrom Manchester Metropolitan - manycongratulations!

At GCSE Rowen Lowson (Winchester) andFlossie Barlas (Fettes) both got 11 9s whilstNancy Barlas (Fettes) got 10 9s and an 8 -fantastic to hear!
