Tenby Schools, Penang: Strategic Plan
The Tenby Schools, Penang 2015—2019 Strategic Plan has been completed and is now available for parent and
staff comment on the School‘s website. Each of the four schools that make up Tenby have completed their own de-
velopment plans that indicate how they will address each of the strategic goals of the Master Plan. The Master Plan
was developed with input from staff, students and parents, and represents how we all would like to see our School
develop in the next 5 years. It is a working document and I encourage interested members of our community to pro-
vide further input and suggestions.

Student Centered Learning JUNIOR 1
Class lessons are also fun and interesting like this lesson on Body parts. Students
were engaged by using smart boards and student centered activities.
Experiential learning was practised in terms of students carrying
out activities like in the lesson of self-hygiene.
Teacher showed us how to wash our hands.
Concept Maps Students as young as in Junior 2 are taught to draw concept map.
Concept maps are good as it will help the student organise facts and
see relationships.

Lesson— English Class
Assembly
Under the KSSR curriculum, Junior 4 pupils have to learn poems
and short stories. The curriculum encourages the use of creative
arts to make the students love and enjoy Literature. As such the
students were asked by their English Teachers to come up with a
fun and interesting way to memories and recite the poem ―The
Woodpecker‖ by Brenda Williams.
The objective was that the Junior 4 English teachers wanted the
students to unleash their creativity by giving life to the poem. The
class was distributed into groups of four and the group members had to brainstorm together for ideas to recite the
poem in the most creative way.
Some groups tried to emulate the
woodpecking sound with a few taps
and knocks on the table, which also
gives the poem a rhythmic beat.
Another group recited the poem to
the tune of a popular children‘s
song while another group tried
―rapping‖ the poem in front of the class.
The students also came bearing props and colourful
woodpecker masks in order to recite the poem in front of
the class and also during the school assembly. All in all,
the learning outcome was achieved and the teachers
were very proud of what the students could achieve with
their own efforts. Well Done to the Junior 4 students!
Now who says learning Literature is dull and boring?

Students make the puppets from templates that were provided. They then create
the dialogue with the theme ―berterima kasih‖ and acted out the scripts using the

World Thinking Day World Thinking Day is a day where girl guides and girl scouts
from around the globe think of each other and express their
thanks and appreciation for the international movement. The
World Thinking Day of 2015 was held in Penang. We were
invited to join this great event. Five of our students attended
the World Thinking Day held at Dewan Sri Pinang. They are
Laekeisya, Natasha, Tasneem, Uttejini and Vitisha.
The day started with a ―Welcome Song‖ and speeches from
distinguished guests. It was then followed by donations from
various representatives of different state of Malaysia. We collected a total of
RM513.00 and we presented to the movement on behalf of Tenby Schools Penang.
After the ceremony we were invited to join the activities. One of the activities was a
detail explanation of the usage and function of ―First Aid Treatment Centre‖. This
was given by a qualified first aider. The Brownies were asked to sign to support
―Stop The Violence ― - to increase awareness of girls against violence.
After visiting most of the exhibits our students were presented with bookmarks and
postcards as souvenirs. The day was fun filled and was very meaningful to our students.

BAHASA MALAYSIA DAY IN STSS
On 27th March 2015, Sri Tenby Secondary School celebrated ―Bahasa
Malaysia Day‖(BM Day). The theme was ―Drama for better BM‖. The
aim of BM Day was to enhance BM speaking, writing skills in a fun way,
through drama
All classes presented half- an hour long sketches, during the event and
prizes were awarded for different categories. Mr. Cheah Sin Hock, the
Head of Sri Tenby Primary and Mdm Thum Lin Chee, Head of Secondary School attended the function.
The skits were presented in the drama room. We were all very eager to see which class would emerge champion in
the drama competition.
The show kick started with short and motivational speeches by
Mdm. Thum Lin Chee, and Mr. Cheah Sin Hock Then, it was show
time. The speeches were followed by the first drama entitled
―Cinderella‖ performed by the Form 1.
After that, it was time for the Form 2 class to perform ―Pak Pandir‖,
which is a story revolving around a man named Pak Pendek, who
was always waking up late. Eventually he paid for his unpunctuality.
The Form 3 class then presented ―Si Tanggang‖. The drama taught
us to be grateful to our parents for all their effort in raising us. The
story depicted the consequences an ungrateful child had to face.
The Form 4 class also performed a skit called ―Bawang Putih
Bawang Merah‖. It is the story of Putih, a young fatherless child
who became part of the royal family.
Lastly, the Form 5 class presented their sketch entitled ―Puteri
Gunung Ledang‖ It is a story about how the Sultan wanted to
marry the woman of his dreams. Instead he was betrayed by
Hang Tuah whom
he sent to ask for her hand in marriage on his behalf.
All the skits were extremely entertaining and many had us all in stitches.
There were students who came out of their shells and surprised us all with
their acting talent. So there are budding Hollywood stars in STSS!
Everyone waited anxiously for the winners to be announced. The teachers
were the judges. Kam Yi En (F4) won the title of Best Actress while
Shaun Yeoh (F3) who played the role of Si Tanggang picked up the
Best Actor award. The moment that everyone was waiting for finally
arrived – award for best drama.. The title went to the Form 5 class for
their creative and absolutely hilarious drama, ―Puteri Gunung Ledang‖.
Everyone had so much fun entertaining and being entertained. It was a
day to remember

Tenby International Secondary School
U19 SEA International Netball Tournament On the 27th of March, the Tenby Tigers Netball Team traveled down south to Singapore for the annual SEA International Netball Tournament which involved 27 teams from all across SEA hosted by Tanglin Trust School.
The competition started the next morning with a group round robins. We were incredibly ‗unlucky‘ as we were drawn into a group with top seeded teams in the competitions, yet the team persevered through the rounds. Being one of the youngest team in our category(our average age was 15!), it was
no easy feat going against older and more experienced players(all 19). By lunch midday, we qualified for the bowl competition. Our team understood that we had a very good change of winning this bowl competition because the teams were of our level of playing. With that spirit, we fought through the next games against Tanglin Trust School, Innova Junior College, Anglo- Chinese School International and a few others.
As we headed into awards, we felt extremely proud because we had poured blood, sweat and tears (literally) into the games of the day. We were treated by the school to a small closing ceremony dinner as well. As the placements were an-nounced, we were shocked and ecstatic to find out that we had come in second place in the bowl competition. Even more surprising was that the other teams in the tournament had voted our team for a fair
play award which mean that our team reflected the spirit of sports-manship and netball. We got to nominated our own MVPs as well that was Rian Yamasaki and Rhea Goh for defending and Sonya Shah for attack.
The highlight of the night was definitely when Miss Sophie and Coach Fumi treated us to ice cream for our win! It was definitely well deserved and with that, the girls wind down. The next day, we
traveled to the famous Orchard Road for some team bonding time at the movies and some shopping.
Reflecting on it, this experience has been extremely invaluable. We had also been so close to winning first place and I‘m sure the girls will be very motivated to come back stronger next year. More importantly, this trip has allowed our team to bond and strengthen as one. Not only did we manage to see and play a higher stand-ard of netball than we usually do, but we also manage to foster the invaluable sportsmanship spirit within ourselves which includ-ed cheering for Uplands even. I feel strongly that this trip had overall been a positive experience for all the girls and would like to thank Miss Sophie, Coach Fumi and Miss Emi for their never end-ing support, training and love throughout this tournament.

Volleyball Tigers Compete in POWISS
For the First time, Tenby competes in a friendly Volleyball match in POWISS.
On March 18th, 7 students travelled the long journey to Balik Pulau to compete
in a friendly volleyball game against POWISS. It was the first time that we took
part in a game against another team and it was a great experience. We played 3
sets against a stronger and older team but still managed to score points and to
improve our techniques. Our defence and accuracy improved, there were some
strong serves and spikes and a determination to play as best as possible.
It has been a great learning experience and I am looking forward developing our
volleyball team and compete in more competitions on the island.

In April 2015, Tenby Penang held its first ever Spring Concert, which proved to be a massive success. This was the first concert to be held under the cover of the Basketball court where over 500 students and parents crowded in to enjoy sophisticated finger food and mocktails (supplied by our very hard working Parents Association, TSPA), and top quality musical entertainment from over 46 talented Tenby students! Performances ranged from Minuets by J.S. Bach, to more contemporary pieces from the classical and film music genres. It was a great evening and now another quality addition to Tenby's annual concert programme. Well done to everyone who took part!
Nice food. Special thanks to members of TSPA

Learning Science outside the classroom Science is an active stimulating subject with lots of facts and information that can be found in books but the real memorable parts of the subject is what is discovered or seen by the individual.
In the classroom we have active stimulating lessons where students share ideas, develop theories and then test them out using equipment in the laboratories. But still lots of things are taken for granted and it is not until an individual actually sees something do they really accept it. This is the reason why we try to take the students outside the classroom on field trips to try to see things first hand.
This year Year 11 went to a recycling plant to see how gold, aluminium and other metals was extracted from old computers, how solvents a range of other materials were extracted from everyday materials and equipment. They also visited a water recycling centre where they learnt the stages of water purification from the water that comes off the mountain to the point it comes out of the tap.
Year 10 visited an organic farm to see vegetables and fruit growing and being harvested, goat milk produced and goat rearing and learned about the problems of using pesticides and herbicides. They also visited the USM museum to see their displays and had a talk and presentation about the stars in the sky, constellation and star maps and visited the University Physics department and learnt about being a University student and their ground breaking research on the manufacture of solar cells.
Year 8 learnt about how raw materials are used to make a range of products and visited The Royal Selangor visitors centre to learn about the Tin mining in Penang and how pewter objects are made. They visited the Batik centre and learnt how the dyes are made and how the traditional batik art work is produced and learnt how clay objects are made, glazed and decorated at Penang pottery club.
Year 9 will learn about how food is made and not just accept that it comes from the supermarket shelf. They will visit the Spice Gardens and learn the history of the spice trade in Penang and all about the uses of many spices. They will also visit a fish farm and learn about how fish are reared and cared for before going to market and they will go on a fishing boat to learn about how fish are caught from the sea.
Year 7 will learn about animal classification and adaptation at Taiping Zoo where they will study a specific animal but also consider the advantages and disadvantages of having Zoo‘s.
We hope to visit the science laboratories of Island hospital to let the Year 12 science students see first hand how doctors make important diagnosis by analysing the results tests carried out in the laboratories. We will see the equipment and learn more about the techniques used.
Please, as you read this and you know of a factory producing something or anything science related that could be turn into a science field trip please let Mr. Duncan Russell know. We are always looking for new ideas and thank those that have helped in the past.

Year 4 Exit Point– Young Entrepreneurs Trade Fair
At the Year 4 Trade Fair you could buy a range of jewelry, book marks,
enjoy refreshments, as well as having a relaxing massage whilst being
entertained by singing from Kai accompanied on the ukulele by Ethan.
These are some of the creative products that the children decided to plan
and market for at the trade fair. In preparation they had to cost and
source materials, make their products, create adverts and business cards
along with collaborating with their team to ensxure that everything was
ready for the timeline of the fair.
On the day parents , students and other teachers were invited to the fair to
enjoy the wide range of products available. One very popular stall was the
relaxing area, where you could buy 1 or 2 minutes massage along with a
refreshing cup of tea whilst being entertained with some light music. Even Mr Greg came for his tea and 1 minute
massage before he visited the other stalls to buy some gifts.
Everyone involved did a fantastic job to make the whole event a roaring
success.
Kai and Ethan
Year 4 had a fantastic Trade Fair at the end of Term 2 as the Exit point for their IPC
Unit Young Entrepreneurs - all the children in groups had to produce something to
sell, and market– they then calculated how much profit they had made after their
overheads had been paid. They are very pleased with the profit of RM 270.95 that
was made overall as a class.
Well done Year 4– successful business people of the future!

Point got us starting to think about doing! ...
We made our own passports— filling in
the information and looking in a mirror to
draw our self carefully.
Miss Jen pretended to be the Travel Agent
and took our holiday bookings!
She asked us where we wanted to go, what accommodation we wanted and how we would like to get there.
We found the destinations on the
globe and how to get there from
Malaysia.
We looked at books and brochures to
find out where we wanted to go.
And we enjoyed many other holiday themed
activities throughout the afternoon too!
