'And the days dwindle down...' Thoughts for dear friend andcolleague Wallace Johnson upon the occasion of his 86thbirthday April 18, 2011.

 by Dr. Jeffrey Lant

Today is a special day, a festive day, a day of celebration and hijinx... today Wallace Johnson,

friend, turns 86 years young; legions of his friends and well wishers will gather via the Internet totoast, to laugh with and to note the day and the man.

Wallace, for all that he was a test pilot with the Apollo Project, (and so truly flew high) is a man of sentiment, art, culture. So I looked for a suitable song to mark this event, and had no troubleselecting "The September Song" by Kurt Weil (music) and Maxwell Anderson (lyrics). It firstappeared in the Broadway musical "Knickerbocher Holiday" (1938).

It is a grand tune with haunting music and a message that grows more apt and poignant day by day.

A host of top artists have recorded this song, and no wonder; Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, JimmyDurante (in 1955 in a particularly touching manner). I select Lotte Lenya. She did, after all, know

Weill best; she married him twice. Her rendition is mesmerizing. Go to any search engine and findit; let the music and its lyrics envelop you as you read an article straight from the heart on this hisspecial day.

".And the days dwindle down To a precious few September, November And these few precious daysI'll spend with you. These precious days I'll spend with you."

Thoughts from a whippersnapper of only 64.

Readers, if you're lucky in life you have a friend and colleague like Wallace. He is dedicated, conscientious to a fault, and he knows the fine art of handling a CEO, which (being the CEO inquestion) I appreciate more than he knows Today, greatly daring, with grave temerity, this self-same

CEO offers a few limpid reflections and observations in the hope that they are welcome...and, moreto the point, correct.

1) You've lived.

In 1955 best-selling author Patrick Dennis wrote a pip of an novel entitled "Auntie Mame". Itoffered this pithy admonition well loved by my mother, "Live! Live! Live! Life is a banquet andmost poor suckers are starving to death."

Wallace, you are a lucky man; you have lived... you have loved... and most importantly you have been loved, and still are. You have known and lived by the truth of Sigmund Freud's famousobservation that the best life is composed of love and work. It is not given to all to know, much less

to benefit from, this.

"Happiness is composed of love and work." (Glück ist Liebe und Arbeit zusammen.")

You have, of course, made errors; not one of us is immune from that. But I suspect, as well as onehuman can know another, that yours were the faults of generosity. You, I know, are quite capable of giving too much to those who may not have been worth the gift, being neither capable of understanding nor reciprocating. If this is a "fault", it is a good one to have. It is, after all, always better to have given, even if from time to time, to the unworthy. Let a man be evaluated by sucherrors...and he shall be found, assuredly, a good man, a kind man, a man of heart. That man is you.

2) You served America proudly, regarding her as needing the support of all who love her, a bastion, not a milch cow for exploitation.

Wallace, you have been since your earliest days, a man who knew the secret of life was always tolook up, to the place beyond the rainbows, for it is only by the exertions of untrammeled people that progress can come. You looked up and saw the cosmos as a subject of study, as a great adventure, asa never-ending source of wonder; a place to embrace and excite, never to shrink from. As a test pilotfor the Apollo Project during the heady days of its inception and development, you saw first-hand

what this great nation can do... no technical impediment too difficult... no vision too unlikely... nodestination too remote.

You are one of the very elect who can say, and proudly, "I was there... and it mattered." And so itdid. The salary was meager; the hours long; the effect profound and inspiring. And you were there, dedicated.

3) You have been a great teacher.

Ask a new member of our Worldprofit community to name a single member, a single monitor, andthe odds are overwhelming they will name you. I know why. First because you saw in us the best of you and in joining did no lip service but made the most serious of commitments. You resolved not

merely to take, but to enhance, improve, and through every season and year, to give. You learned our innovative business... you excelled. You understood, as so many have not, that theInternet is not a destination; it is a process, a process of connecting the members of our species, wherever they are located, so that they may communicate the very best of which we are capable.

You embraced this mission as you embraced all your missions: with seriousness of intent, with fullcommitment, and with an unexampled talent for training other good people worldwide whounderstood the vital importance of our monitor program and wanted to add their talents to the corpsepitomized by you. As such you have, first, touched the lives of these monitors, directly, personally, diplomatically, thoroughly. In turn these monitors, with their important tasks, have touched the livesof untold thousands, who may perhaps never know they have benefited from you and your gift of

giving. But they most assuredly have.

4) You have helped your CEO, a "lad" still on the sunny side of Social Security, just.

Wallace, many people today, and on many days to come, will extol your virtues, and rightly so. But Iam the only man in the universe who can extol you for this: that you have helped your CEO, notleast by your empathy, diplomacy, and the art of knowing just when to offer home truths, the better to attend to them... and to listen. I appreciate your deftness... and your unflagging assistance.

Many people, 2 decades and more senior in age, would have found ways to roil the waters. Youchose with consummate loyalty, to smooth the road... without the slightest hint of servility or arriere pensee. You have been amidst so many loyal, the most loyal of all.

You have given me the benefit of wisdom, without condescension. You have listened... you havespoken candidly... you have reminded when necessary and "forgotten" when prudent. I amappreciative, in your debt, impressed and grateful.

"And these few precious days, I'll spend with you."

If we are known and greatly defined by the company we keep, then surely we are here atWorldprofit, all of us the beneficiaries of this: that from a multitude of other companies andopportunities, Wallace Johnson selected us.

Now my 86th birthday gift to you, Wallace, is this:

The short life and appalling death of Raymond Zack, anavoidable American tragedy.

 by Dr. Jeffrey Lant

Crown Memorial State Beach, Alameda, California is the kind of place you come to breathe andshake off life's trials and tribulations.

The panorama is just what you think the Golden State should be...a place of possibilities, notinhibitions. Here the air is superior to any French vintage... the chill waters are bracing and playful....

Here the very birds fly higher because they are contented at such a place... and in the distance, clearly seen, is the great structure of one of mankind's signature triumphs the Golden Gate Bridge...which sends every spirit soaring...

It was here that Raymond Zack came to die... and where the people charged with protecting lifeassisted Raymond take his, to the astonishment, wonder and outrage of the world.

Raymond Zack, born July 23, 1959.

Raymond was, like so many millions of us, a son of America's great heartland; Ohio born and bred. His life moved to the rhythm that is so quintessentially ours...

He was a product of Columbus' Catholic schools... where he learned good manners, the importanceof being a good man and valuable citizen... and where he glimpsed, at the hands of his dedicatedinstructors, the reality of God Everlasting. At 6'3" tall, this giant of a boy excelled at track and baseball... people saw him above the crowd and, with a wink and nudge, said the boy had talent.

He went, and went proudly, to Ohio State.... as American as any educational establishment in theland. It was here, upon graduation, that he entered the community of educated men and women...And where he decided to answer Horace Greeley's great exhortation "Go West, young man, GoWest!" And he did, attracted by the dazzling sunshine and even more dazzling possibilities of California, the pot of gold at the end of America's rainbow.

But California life, for all that the sun was radiant, gave Raymond Zack more than his share of life'stroubles. His family life was turbulent, confusing, never restful though he was the beneficiary of hisfoster mother's affectionate care and unceasing concern.

He weighed 300 pounds now and, like millions of his countrymen, was challenged by thecomplexities of food and the clear and present dangers of overindulgence. Chagrined by his bulk,Raymond, bit by bit, withdrew from the body politic and faced the secret sorrows of isolation andloneliness, the abiding reality for too many of his countrymen.

His mother died in November 2010... and though there had been confusions and disappointmentsthere, still she was his mother... and her loss magnified his burdens.

Then, in the midst of a great recession, where California's profound promise was tarnished,Raymond lost his job at the St. Vincent de Paul Free Food Distribution Center where, along withMrs. Dolores Berry, his foster mother, he had helped everyone who came. Now the man who hadhelped so many... was himself in need of help. This, too, was, quintessentially American for toomany...

Raymond, with a "God helps those who help themselves" attitude, tried hard to do what he'd beentaught to do; to keep his chin up and a stiff upper lip; to do what he could... to stay cheerful in theface of adversity.

But bit by bit, like so many, his resilience and hope were worn away. Raymond's dark days werenigh...

In the still of the night...

We shall never know where Raymond's anxious forebodings carried him, alone at the midnight hour.At such a time a man may turn to booze, women, any dissipation to dispel the gloom... but Raymondseems to have faced his great matter alone... and in profound despair. This, too, is reality for millions

of the dispossessed and fearful.

At some irrevocable moment in his profound human misery Raymond decided the game was notworth the candle... and that it was time to move again, out of very life itself.

Thus, on May 30, 2011, while his countrymen were celebrating the sacrifices made by others to the benefit of all, Raymond Zack decided to make a sacrifice, too -- of himself, since living life was justtoo painful and without hope.

And so he waded into the chill waters at Crown Memorial State Beach, about to be the venue of muddle, confusion, bumbling... and death. A great American tragedy was about to commence...unnecessary, scandalous, an event that enhanced no one and left Raymond Zack, floating face down,

his life's work at an end.

Seen by many.

Remember, Raymond Zack was a big man, 6'3", over 300 pounds. He moved slowly, deliberately inthe shallow waters. He was clearly seen though his purpose, at first, was not. Still, as Raymondwalked into deeper waters, residents were concerned; a 911 call was made... alerting police andfirefighters that some kind of incident was underway.

In just 4 minutes help was at hand... and at hand help stayed... but without lifting a finger. And hereis where an avoidable tragedy morphs into disbelief, reproach, scandal, and incomprehension.

Not one of the many lifesaving professionals on the beach, not a single one, did a single thing toforestall the tragedy that could so easily have been prevented.

Later these officials, pummelled by an incredulous world, worked overtime to manufacture excusesthey hoped would appease, mollify and cover.

Fire officials said that because of budget cuts no one knew the necessary rescue procedures. But thisexcuse was quickly blasted... when it was shown the department had money, but no sense. Other officials said rescue policies did not cover the case in point.

A police spokesman said officers stayed out of the water because Zack was suicidal and posed a possible threat.

A boat was requested to take officers to Zack... but those requesting it never indicated the matter was pressing.

In short, at every moment where judgement, help and assistance were required... the professionals athand, our honored paladins, were without judgement, help and assistance.

And so, in full view of the world, in full view of his hysterical foster parent, 86 year old DoloresBerry, who unsuccessfully begged for celerity and assistance, Raymond Zack died...

In the way of these things, everything the system could have provided Raymond in life only emergedwhen he was dead... in such ways does America expiate its negligence.

Now there are flowers on the beach where he died, a crowd gathers daily to reflect and wonder; bishops make Raymond the subject of their learned lamentations. Municipal officials investigate anddismiss the inept. All this is good, right and proper.

But we must not forget the man at the center of it all, Raymond Zack, dead too soon at 50. He meantus well, each and every one of us. Now, prematurely, he rests in the bosom of the Lord; may he findthe peace there he never had here.

'My huckleberry friend, Moon River and me.' Thoughts onNeil Armstrong, hero. Dead at 82, August 25, 2012.

 by Dr. Jeffrey Lant

Author's program note. Do you remember where you were July 20, 1969? It was one of the iconicdates in the history of our species. Like virtually everyone in the United States and world I was

glued to the television, in my case in San Francisco. I was mesmerized by an unfolding event that previously could only be imagined. I was watching a representative of our species -- an Americanman -- walk on the untrodden moon and make us all so proud, not least for the simplicity anduniversality of his short remarks, a few words that will live forever:

"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

The bar I was in erupted into prolonged cheers as these words, crackling through the distance, rainedupon us like a benediction. First the words... then mayhem. I shouted along with the entire world...hugged... kissed total strangers, people I had never seen before and would never see again. All because one man, seen clearly if imperfectly in the grainy pictures from on high, had done a thingevery infant can do... take a first step.

At the moment it happened, we were all drawn together. There was a sense of profound joy, relief, and pride in our Great Republic and what it could do when it focused on the project at hand, doing itright, doing it the can-do American way.... As a nation we needed this shot in the arm, we neededthis re-affirmation, we needed to be reminded there's nothing we cannot do when we insist on doingit. That day, the day we all remember like it happened yesterday, was many things -- a once-in-alifetime thrill; a risky, even dangerous challenge successfully met; essential confirmation that wewere indeed a people of dexterity and destiny, but above all we were still inhabitants of that shiningCity on a Hill, a people of vision, of great goals set and great goals achieved. No wonder there werehugs and kisses all round.

At the center of our jubilation about taming the moon was one decent, grounded man, the kind of man-next-door we all knew and relied upon. And as we saw and heard him at his essentiali work, wewere glad in our souls that such a one was treading the moon for all of us, for he was one of us, the best of us, the very person we instinctively knew was so right for the work at hand. This was the trueimportance and lasting legacy of Neil Armstrong, the right man at the right place at the time weneeded him.

How had this crucial serendipity happened?

America's lunar perambulation (but not yet Armstrong's part) was predictable from 4 October 1957.This was the fateful date of another iconic event, the day the Soviet Union, the deadliest of our enemies, sent Earth's first artificial satellite into orbit. The result was mass terror, profound fear and a

certainty that the Russkies were indeed coming, were in fact already on their way, Sputnik I the precursor of American subjugation and humiliation.

Like all my countrymen, like concerned peoples everywhere, I looked up that perfect fall eveningand saw... a future where everywhere around me, the verities of our national life, its blessedcontours, its fundamental certainties was all at risk, my life no longer mine but waiting to be claimed by clever partisans of the Evil Empire, our soon-to-be masters. No one who was not present thatnight can understand this profound angst, despair, and horror at what we all knew was the impendingapocalypse.

We all vowed that this would not occur... and if it did that we, not the Russians, would emerge

victorious, whatever was required. We were not born to be second rate, to fill second place... and the politicians who understood this and spoke to and promised a great national revival were the oneswho captured our attention, our votes, and our admiration.

John F. Kennedy was such a man, and he recognized that sending a man to the moon and bringinghim safely home was the adamant symbol the world needed to confirm America's place at the top.Such a mission, dangerous, expensive, unprecedented was just the tonic needed to repair andreinvigorate the body politic. On May 25, 1961 before a Joint Session of Congress, Kennedy threw

down the gauntlet... we would go to the moon, no ifs, ands, or buts."Moon River".

Just as the president was making this epochal announcement, this historic commitment to lunar and planetary exploration, a song was sweeping the nation. It was "Moon River" by Johnny Mercer (lyrics) and Henry Mancini (music). Sung by Audrey Hepburn in the film "Breakfast at Tiffany's", itwon the 1961 Academy Award for "Best Original Song." It's lyrics might have been written for thenew space program:

"Moon River, wider than a mile,/ I'm crossing you in style some day."

Smart people, people with insight, realized Hepburn wasn't just singing about a lazy Southern river  but, far more significant, the actual moon itself, "my huckleberry friend". And so Holly Golightly became an advocate of lunar lift-off. "Moon River and me." But who would lead the expedition, called Apollo 11, crossing the moon in style?

There was just a handful of men qualified to do so; one of them was Neil Armstrong, naval aviator, aerospace engineer, a level-headed Ohio man who had, since joining the NASA Astronaut Corps in1962, moved up in the program, steadily, consistently, one important reason why being the fact thathe was liked by all, his ego firmly in control.

This was a very important factor in that hothouse of male egos called NASA. He was the ultimateteam player who made it clear to the powers that be, "wherever you're going I'm going your way." It

was a message heard loud and clear. Here was a man who understood not only the complicatedtechnical aspects but the fact that the lunar mission was also and more importantly a signal toAmericans that we were back on top again while reassuring everyone else that our motives weregenerous, humane and in no way threatening to them.

"The Eagle has landed."

Thus on that day of our nation's pride in July, 1969 it was Armstrong who commanded the missionand thrilled an expectant world with the announcement they had landed... followed about 6 hoursand 30 minutes later with the words that ensured his place in history... and our hearts. Inevitablyhonors were rained upon him and his crew, co-pilot Buzz Aldrin and third astronaut MichaelCollins. They deserved all of it.

Now Neil Armstrong is dead, his last important mission accomplished. That is the one whichcommenced the minute he landed on Earth again after his famous walk-about. This mission wasdoing nothing to tarnish, diminish or undermine what he and his colleagues had achieved. Hereagain he did the necessary, being the perfect keeper of the flame and a true hero, modest, unassuming, selfless; a man who was vividly and completely aware of the great significance of hiswork, never needing to say so.

And so this son of Ohio lived out his days in Ohio and died in Ohio, at peace with himself, hiscommunity, his professional colleagues, and his God who had, we know, shed His grace on thee, theman whose single step on the moon signalled the giant leap for mankind.

Now the Eagle is ascending again, free to fly high and far. "There's such a lot of world to see", andno one better to find it for the rest of us than Neil Armstrong, humanity's guide into the limitlessCosmos and its unequalled beauty and awe.

Remarks made on behalf of Wallace Johnson, exemplaryhome business owner, aged 88, on the occasion of hisvictory in the Worldprofit Inc. sales contest, April, 2013.

By Dr. Jeffrey Lant

Author's program note. Since the beginning of human society and civilization, we homo sapiens

have extolled... and rightly so... the achievements of our fellow Earth travelers, not just to honor the people who have advanced our collective cause but to point to them as models of our kind, rolemodels for our present, abiding models to inform and inspire all who follow us.

The ways in which notable people are so honored are as various as the people themselves.Sovereigns lift subjects to milords by their "mere motion." Medals are given the worthy for thegreatest action of all... saving life while risking their own. Even our pets are honored for "best of  breed", their awards and meritorious mentions covering thousands of walls in jurisdictionsworldwide. We all know the value of honor. We all strive to recognize it... and if we have any gritabout us, we all work hard to be such an honored person and enjoy the plaudits and the respect of thegood people who matter.

It is my privilege as Chief Executive Officer of Worldprofit.com to present such a person to you andto do it in the most honorable of ways... modeled after a great Guildhall banquet in London... for there is no people on Earth which values its great events as much as the British do... and which goesto greater exertion to ensure all such occasions are rendered just so... absolutely perfect in everysingle important and time-honored detail; just as we trust this event is rendered.

Honored friend, Wallace, such punctilio is your due for you have honored your colleagues everysingle day with your signal service... no more so than in April, 2013. Thus we gather to praise you...to recognize you... and to make merry in grand fashion for you have earned such an event, suchhonor, such recognition and the friendship of all who stand forward in this article with their laudablewords.

Musical accompaniment.

To accompany this homage I have selected one of the most well-known and stirring of songs, thesong that celebrates the great days of England's imperium, "Heart of Oaks." Go find it in any searchengine now.

The music was composed by Dr. William Boyce, and the words were written by the celebrated actor David Garrick. It was originally written as an opera and premiered New Year's Eve 1759 at theGarrick Theatre.

The "wondrous year" referenced in the first verse is 1759-1760, during which British forces were

victorious in actions as disparate and universal as the Battle of Minden on 1st August 1759; theBattle of Lagos on 19 August 1759; the Battle of the Plains of Abraham (outside Quebec City) on 13September 1759 and the Battle of Quiberon Bay on 20 November 1759, foiling a French invasion project. These were followed a few months later by the Battle of Wandiwash in India on 22 January1760. >From these victories emerged an empire on which the sun never set... and lyrics grandenough to celebrate such an achievement, especially this line:

"We always are ready; steady, boys, steady."

And Wallace, that line embodies the way you have lived your life, from the Apollo Project whereyou were a distinguished Test Pilot, to your current career as home business entrepreneur, counselor
