To work out the best method to transition, take the Transition Quiz!

I want to stop relaxing. What do I do?

There are many factors to take into account when you are trying to decide if you should enroll in BIG CHOP or TRANSITION. Here is a little test you can take to see which way may be the best for you. Add up the numbers according to your answers and click on your final score below. Note that your results don’t mean you HAVE to transition a certain way, it’s a guide to what you may be able to do.

Your score: Over 60 points.

Grab a friend, get the scissors and… “Big Chop”

Your score indicates the best path for you to follow is to cut the relaxed hair off and start your natural journey wearing a twa (teeny weeny afro). Depending on how much new growth you have, this could mean you have as little as 1/4 inch of hair or 2 inches of hair.

There are a few ways you can do this. You can go to a professional stylist, barber, have a trusted friend help you, or you can do it yourself. Nappturality recommends you have a professional stylist do this to ensure your hair is as even as possible, but if you decide to try it yourself, there are a few rules to follow.

The scissors you use must be specifically and exclusively used for cutting hair. Don’t use scissors that have been used to cut anything else. Using the wrong scissors may mean you are cutting split ends into your hair. Make sure you get off to a good start by using the correct scissors.

You must ascertain the line of demarcation. This is the line where the relaxed hair and new growth meet. To do this you must wet your hair. The two textures should be clearly visible on freshly washed hair.

Once you can see this line, you can proceed to snip the hair off, cutting slightly into the new growth.

Once you have cut your hair, treat yourself to a hot oil or deep conditioning treatment.

Take a look in the mirror and enjoy what you see. It’s the real you!

Your score: Between 45 and 60 points…

You’re in for the “Short Transition”

Your score indicates the best path for you to follow is to transition for a short period of time. This means that you will be happiest if you can hold on to your relaxed hair for a short amount of time while working with the two textures. You probably are adept at styling your hair and are willing to learn a few more skills in order to wear longer hairstyles while transitioning.

Your transitioning may take anywhere from 2 to 6 months.

It may be an option for you to transition with braids or a weave. If you aren’t a skilled stylist with your hair or if you are getting frustrated with the two textures, consider having extensions put in for a little while, giving your hair a little length before cutting off the relaxed ends. Be sure to read the section “Extension Route” for help with extensions.

Page 3: A Transitioner's Hair Guide

Keep in mind that if your relaxed hair is severely damaged, it is recommended that you cut it off. You will not be able to manage two textures if the relaxed hair is damaged because breakage is inevitable. If this is the case, you may want to enquire about a loose weave because individual braids may put too much tension and strain on your hair, causing more damage.

You may be interested in learning how to straw set and roller set your hair. Also, flat twists and two-strand twists (extensions or natural) are options which can help the two textures of hair look similar. Check out the section on Transition Styles to learn more about styling your hair.

Your score: Less than 45 points.

Hold on to your hair… execute the “Long Transition”

Your score indicates that you may be able to transition for an extended period of time. Your transitioning may take up to 12 months. Any longer than that may prove counter-productive for your natural hair. (Not entirely true once you learn to care for your hair)

To transition for a long period successfully, your relaxed hair should not be over processed and/or extensively damaged. If it is, you should either cut the relaxed hair off and wear your hair at its natural length, or try wigs or extensions until your hair reaches a length you are comfortable with.

If you plan to work with the two textures on a Long Transition, you should be willing to learn new skills in styling and to take the time to learn. You will need patience and products to help you with the styling. If you have long relaxed hair, as your natural hair grows you will be confronted with styling issues you will need to be prepared for.

Three important tips for long transitioning include:

1. Always deep condition your hair whenever you wash it.2. Do not use heat repeatedly on the new napptural growth in order to straighten it to match the relaxed hair.3. If your hair shows signs of breakage at the line of demarcation, consider cutting the relaxed hair off early.

Page 4: A Transitioner's Hair Guide

10 Hair DOs and DON’Ts

1. DO your research!

2. Do Not Be Impatient. Learning your natural hair, what it likes and dislikes, takes time. Continue to be patient with your hair, and your hair will tell you what it needs to be its best.

3. Do Not Be Discouraged by others negative comments or lack of compliments… grow to love your napps first and perhaps accolades will follow.

4. Do Not Assume that wearing your natural texture will hinder your personal progress. Contrary to what some may think, nappies can get a job, find a Significant Other, etc. without straightening their hair. If you put your best self forward at all times, the last thing a potential employer or suitor should be concerned about is your hair.

5. Have Patience With Yourself! This is a learning process. Do not be afraid to ask questions! There will be so much you’ll need to learn in the beginning…and will continue to learn things well after the fact. You will quickly begin learning so many beneficial things about natural hair care, that you will soon be able to share that same information with others who follow in your footsteps of being natural!

6. There is No Good or Bad Natural Hair… only Beauty.

7. Do Not Change your hair for anyone but yourself: Straightening with a Chemical Fire Cream or Flaming Hot Tool of Tourture, Dyes and/or Highlights will lead to regrets. All these can or will alter your texture. So before you do it or think about doing it, do your research and decide what’s best for you.

8. Don’t Think That a Product or Routine Will Work For You: just because it works for someone else. Keep trying different things slowly until you find what works for you. And then be flexible enough to change if it stops working as well due to growth, weather, or any number of reasons.

9. DON’T COMPARE: Don’t Be Sad that your hair doesn’t look, act, or feel like someone else’s hair. It’s unproductive. And for all you know, there’s someone else infatuated over what you’ve got.

10. Don’t obsess about hair length and buy into the hype: If you concentrate on keeping your hair healthy, it will grow to its fullest extent naturally! For some this is shoulder length. For some it is on the back. Just because your hair may not grow to the lengths of another, doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with your hair. It just means your hair growth phase is shorter. Everyone’s hair growth phases (anagen, catagen, telogen) are different, and mainly genetically determined.

As long as your hair is healthy, be happy with its condition and flaunt your beautiful head of natural hair!! If you’ve achieved healthy hair, you’ve succeeded!

10 Hair Commandments1. I WILL WASH MY HAIR EVERY 3 DAYS (EVERY 2 WEEKS MAXIMUM)2. I WILL NOT TOUCH MY HAIR DAILY (although this may seem very very

difficult at first)-It dries your hair out-And just too much manipulation can cause breakage-can severely damage your hair-your hand contains acid and other foreign materials that your hair can negatively react to

3. I WILL CONDITION MY HAIR AFTER EVERY WASH(AND MONTHLY OR WEEKLY DEEP CONDITION WHEN NECESSARY)

4. I WILL PROTECT MY HAIR5. I WILL MOISTURIZE MY HAIR6. I WILL NOT apply heat to my hair (only on a 1 time basis or special occasion)

-Less heat = less stress = lower stress = more growth-Prep hair for heat-can severely damage your hair; Heat Protectant-And just too much manipulation can cause breakage-Too much heat can severely damage your hair

7. I will appreciate EVERY strand of hair DAILY8. I WILL MANAGE MY STRESS LEVELS9. I WILL EAT THE PROPER NUTRITION10. I WILL STAY PHYSICALLY FIT/ACTIVE

READ IF YOU ARE…AVOIDING THE BIG CHOP

1. STOP relaxing your hair this includes the edges2. Get a good trim: starting with even ends will make the journey easier (You can

later make the decision whether or not to trim your ends every 6-8 weeks)3. Don’t set a time just yet to wack off your hair. Give yourself about 4 months –

by then you will have enough new growth to make decision and an idea of what your hair is like

4. Find your go to transitioning hairstyle. The goal is to blend the 2 VERY different textures of your hair into one. Braids, braid outs, and twists out work well. Roller sets such as straw set or perm rods (rod sets) work for those who have a majority of relaxed hair on their heads.

5. Deep condition weekly6. MOISTURIZE 1-2 daily and seal with a natural oil7. ONLY DETANGLE when Hair is wet with a conditioner and with a WIDE-

TOOTHED comb. Always start at the ends and work your way up.8. Cover hair EVERY NIGHT with silk/satin scarf9. AVOID products with alcohol10. NEVER USE A SULFATE SHAMPOO. They cause DRYNESS (However if

you must use one dilute it with at least one or two caps of water. Only use a capful of the sulfate shampoo)

Rosemary for Hair

Page 7: A Transitioner's Hair Guide

This magnificent herb is widely respected for its value as a hair and beauty aide. Rosemary can also be used in the bath, on the face and as a body or scalp massage.

Believed to stimulate hair follicles and hair growth, rosemary is generally believed to slow down or even permanently hold off premature hair loss and gray hair.

Rosemary oils and concoctions will soothe and condition dry, flaky scalps.  When applied in a concentrated form to the roots and scalp, rosemary is helpful in clearing many cases of dandruff.  Rosemary also mixes well with tea tree and basil for stubborn scalp problems.

Rosemary Hair Oils

Rosemary is known to help darken gray hair over time (although not obvious for a long time) and it is considered to be a stimulant for the roots and the scalp. Many people trying to help stimulate their hair to grow longer or healthier swear by various rosemary infused recipes.

If you have long hair with some hints of gray, you may want to avoid using commercial dyes or colors to protect the health of your hair.  Over an extended period of time rosemary rinses and oils are rumored to gently and softly darken gray hair. Rosemary will also eliminate dryness and act as an excellent conditioner.

Besides being rumored to help grow hair faster & prevent pre-mature baldness (no scientific evidence to that at this point) it is also good for knocking out dandruff.

If you have blonde or light colored hair you may NOT want to try this recipe as it may darken your hair.

Rosemary Hair Oil Recipe

Rosemary blends very well with others in the mint family. It is especially beneficial when mixed with basil, bergamot, juniper, lemon and cedar.  Basil is a known scalp and hair follicle stimulant.

Keep in mind that any rosemary concoctions will be stimulating and refreshing.  This is a very Yang herb that is uplifting, strengthening and invigorating.  It increases circulation and will often make the scalp or body feel warm after it is massaged with a rosemary formula or oil.

Ingredients

Page 8: A Transitioner's Hair Guide

Mason, Ball or other sterile class jar with air-tight lid. 1 cup of fresh rosemary leaves (optional, add a smidgen of basil and juniper fresh

leaves and/or essential oils to the mix). Jojoba oil (optional, sesame or sweet almond oil).

Directions

Fill the class jar with the rosemary.  Cover the rosemary with the jojoba oil so that the rosemary is completely covered.  Place the jar in your sunniest window.  Let the herbs “steep” for 4 weeks or so.  Turn the jar slightly every day to make sure that the sun contacts all sides of the jar.  When the oil is finished steeping for 4 weeks, strain the leaves from the liquid with an all natural paper coffee filter or silk.  Filter into a clean, sterilized amber or dark colored jar.  Store in a cool, dark place.

Application

Pour just enough for your immediate needs into a clean glass bowl.  Heat gently over a double boiler on in a microwave.  Make sure the oil is warm but not too hot.  Work the oil into the hair from the ears down to the ends.  Use a cotton ball or your clean fingers. Apply a plastic shower cap or wrap.  You may sit under a hood dryer to add heat or wrap hot towels over the plastic to help the oil soak into the cuticles more easily.

If you prefer to buy pre-made rosemary hair oils WiseWays Herbals has a couple of hair oils that are made with natural Rosemary.  Goldilocks Hair Oil has many wonderful ingredients designed to stimulate the scalp, the roots and the hair.  Combined with the rosemary leaves and rosemary oil is basil (one of my favorites) although with nettle, lavender flowers & burdock root and oils of lavender, jojoba & coconut.

VZ Botanicals includes a form of rosemary oil in its formula and Welleda has their famous Rosemary hair oil.

Anti-dandruff Shampoo Recipe

Rosemary works well to help with itchy scalps and for relieving dandruff.

Glass pots work best for creating this recipe.

Ingredients

1 cup of dried rosemary leaves (not stalks or other part of the rosemary) Use more or less rosemary according to personal tastes.

1 tablespoon of borax (from the health food store) 1 quart of boiling water (distilled or spring water) 10-20 drops of Camphor

Instructions

Page 9: A Transitioner's Hair Guide

Place the dried rosemary leaves in the boiling water on top of a stove or heater. Bring the water to a full boil, turn off the water and then steep in the pot for 6 hours. You can steep the leaves for less time but the longer you steep the more concentrated the results.

Store the mixture in a dark amber glass in the refrigerator. Heat just enough for your treatment. This will probably last 1 week or more. You can tell by the aroma of the mixture.

Do not use the camphor until right before you use the rosemary mixture. Add 10-20 drops of liquid camphor. You may want to start slowly with a lower dosage since camphor can really blast open your sinuses and can make your eyes water if you inhale too much.

Use a cotton ball and dip into a small cup of the liquid and saturate your itchy scalp or root area. If you prefer, wrap your hair in a plastic cup and let soap for 30 minutes. For extra penetration wrap a hot towel over the plastic towel or wrap.  Keep in mind that rosemary can stain.

The Rosemary scalp tonic can be applied every day or as desired. To darken hair you will need to apply as an overall rinse 3x a week. Keep in mind that you hair may take a long time to show a change in the color.

I like to play with these types of recipes in the bathtub because it makes them so less messy. Also, rosemary is good for your skin so if it drinks into your bath water…no big deal.

The rosemary mixture can also be used an all over final rinse. Use a plastic bowl to catch the liquid as it falls so you can rinse several times.

Honey & Rosemary on Your Hair

Honey mixed with a little of the rosemary hair oil mixture described above can be used an overall hair softening agent. It is very messy & sticky so if you are going to try it, apply the honey mixture to your hair in the shower after you have first wet your hair.

Note: It is not recommended that you experiment with honey mixtures on dry hair as it will be too difficult to apply.

Do not shampoo your hair first, just wet your hair w/ warm water. Squeeze excess water out and then apply the honey to your ends and dry middle hair.

Leave the mixture on for 5-10 minutes and then rinse out. You can follow with a moisturizing shampoo and rinse out conditioner.

Not only will your hair get conditioned, olive oil will also remove the static and frizz from your hair. There are people who make use of olive oil as a serum. Take very small quantity of olive oil on your hand. Rub your hands together and then run them through your hair.

Olive Oil for Hair GrowthExtra virgin oil is rich in high levels of mono-unsaturated fatty acids and Vitamin E. Vitamin E is an antioxidant, which is good for hair growth. Antioxidants are beneficial as they slow the ageing process. Both mono-unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E are good for moisturizing, protecting and nourishing hair. Olive oil makes hair grow stronger. Olive oil has emollient properties, due to which olive oil for hair loss, is often recommended. Olive oil for hair care is great, for another reason. It helps in battling dandruff, which can be one of the reasons for hair loss.

Olive Oil for Hair LiceVery few people are aware that olive oil can be used to get rid of hair lice. It is a gentle way of getting rid of those creatures, which can cause much irritation and agony.

Olive Oil for Hair and SkinHere are some of the ways of using olive oil, for beautiful lustrous, shiny hair and smooth skin.

Page 11: A Transitioner's Hair Guide

For smoother and softer skin, apply olive oil liberally on your hands and feet. Cover your hands and feet with hand gloves and socks after doing that. Wash it after an hour.

If your lips are chapped, apply extra virgin oil to them. To get lustrous, shiny, long hair apply olive oil to your hair and scalp. Then cover

your head with a shower cap. If you are in a hurry you can wash your hair after 30 to 45 minutes. If you are not in a hurry, then olive oil for hair overnight, is the best option.

Benefits of jojoba oil for hair growth

Page 16: A Transitioner's Hair Guide

Jojoba Oil for Hair and Scalp

Today, hair and scalp problems like dandruff, hair loss, dryness of hair and split ends are quite common, owning to the excessive exposure of hair to harsh chemicals, pollutants, and hair styling products. Jojoba oil with some of its amazing properties can prove extremely useful for most of the modern day hair problems. This oil is usually regarded as quite an unique oil, due to its structural resemblance to ‘sebum’ or oil produced by the sebaceous glands, present in our scalp and skin. This may be the reason why, when applied topically, this oil can regulate the level of sebum production. Excess production of sebum can clog the hair follicles and impede hair growth and jojoba oil can prove quite beneficial in this regard.

One of the most important benefits of jojoba oil for hair loss is that it can keep the scalp clean. Jojoba oil is an effective scalp cleanser. As we know, the sebaceous glands of the scalp secrete ‘sebum’ or oil to keep the hair follicles and hair shafts well moisturized. But, often sebum secreted by these glands tend to get encrusted and block the hair follicles, leading to hair breakage and hair loss. Even the rate of hair growth can get adversely affected, if the follicles are clogged due to sebum deposition on the scalp. Jojoba oil, as a scalp cleanser can help to get rid of such crusted sebum, which in turn, may help to reduce hair fall and breakage.

Apart from the above mentioned benefits, using jojoba oil to massage your scalp can improve blood circulation. This can stimulate the hair follicles to grow rapidly. Due to its antibacterial and fungicidal properties, jojoba oil can also be used for keeping the scalp healthy. It can help to reduce hair loss, caused by the factors like, scalp dermatitis, psoriasis and eczema. However, a discussion about the benefits of jojoba oil for hair growth will be incomplete, without mentioning the moisturizing properties of this oil. Jojoba oil is an excellent hair conditioner, which can be used to get rid of dry and frizzy hair. It can seal in the moisture in the hair shaft and add a natural glow and luster to your hair, by minimizing the damage caused by harsh chemicals and pollutants.

How to Use Jojoba Oil for Hair Growth?

Jojoba oil can be used to give your hair a hot oil treatment, prior to shampooing, in order to stimulate hair growth. For this, just warm the oil a bit and then massage the scalp and hair with it. Leave it for about an hour, after which use a mild shampoo to wash your hair. You can also mix jojoba oil with other hair oils to give hot oil treatment to your hair. Although, it is termed as an oil, it is in fact a wax extract – a mixture of esters of fatty acids and fatty alcohols. The unrefined oil appears as a clear golden liquid, while the refined oil is colorless and odorless. Similar to other oils, the jojoba oil is greasy, though to a much lesser extent, and when applied directly on hair will attract dirt and dust. A large number of off-the-shelf products of hair, jojoba oil being one of the main key ingredients. Let’s find out about the usefulness of jojoba oil for hair care.

Jojoba Oil for Hair GrowthThe chemical structure of jojoba oil resembles the natural skin oil called ‘sebum’, produced by the sebaceous glands. Sebum moisturizes the scalp and helps reduce hair loss. However, a thickened build up of sebum may in turn clog hair follicles and impede hair growth resulting in loss of hair. Jojoba oil, when applied in such conditions, readily penetrates the follicles, dissolves the build ups and frees the follicle for further growth. The antiseptic effect of jojoba oil, cleanses the scalp of bacteria. Pure jojoba oil is effective in treating dry and scaly scalp. The jojoba oil is, therefore, one of the most valuable, natural products for use in haircare.

Benefits of Jojoba Oil for HairJojoba oil is renowned for its moisturizing ability. Massaging the oil on to the scalp moisturizes the scalp, and also provides good conditioning effect for the hair. If you are suffering from thinning hair, jojoba oil is good to apply on the scalp. A mixture of a few drops of jojoba oil shampoo enhances the moisturizing effect and provides the much needed nourishment to the hair. The conditioning effect enhances new cell growth making the hair stronger. As such, jojoba oil works especially well for dull and frizzy hair. A few drops of jojoba oil may be applied to the ends of damp hair, to make it soft and add luster to your hair.

Homemade Damaged Hair Treatment:

Considerations

Treating damaged hair means replacing the lost moisture, the missing oils (that help hair retain the moisture) and the protein that’s lost from chemical treatments. A good hair treatment will include high moisture ingredients, small-molecule oils and protein.

Using Hair Treatments

Homemade hair treatments don’t come with a label of instructions. Shampoo hair thoroughly with a buildup-removing shampoo, Towel dry and apply the treatment. Cover with a plastic shower cap or grocery bag (to keep it moist and keep the heat in) and sit in the sunshine or cover with a towel to keep it warm for 30 to 45 minutes. Rinse with warm water and shampoo afterward. For coarse hair, follow-up with your daily conditioner and style as usual.

Ingredients

For protein ingredients, the most common is egg, followed by yogurt. For light-weight oils, try olive or sweet almond oil, as well as bananas or avocados. Mayonnaise is popular, but the vegetable oil molecules are very greasy and not readily absorbed by the hair. For moisture-rich ingredients, try avocado, raw honey, or coconut milk.

Misconceptions

Many people think that a vinegar rinse is an effective conditioner. The first few times you use it, the acid in the vinegar removes the buildup of products on the hair and closes off the cuticle layer, smoothing it down and bringing out the shine. It does not, however, add moisture, protein or oil and is not effective as a conditioner. You can use a vinegar rinse daily or after deep conditioning.
