Mark 5:1They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes.

Mark 4:35On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.”

Mark 5:2And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.

A dismal situation (vv. 2-5)

“a demon-possessed man.” (v. 15)

Mark 5:3-4He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him.


Mark 5:5Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.


Mark 5:6-7And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him. And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do

not torment me.”

Mark 5:8For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!”

Mark 5:9And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion,for we are many.”

Mark 5:10And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country.


Mark 5:11-12Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they beggedhim, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.”


“The death of the pigs demonstrates the ultimate aim of demonic

possession. The first purpose is to mar the image of God in the person

possessed. This was pitifully evident in the man from the tombs. The second goal is death. What happened to the pigs was what would have eventually

happened to the man.”

Mark 5:13So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea.


Deuteronomy 29:29The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

Mark 5:14-15The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened. And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid.

Mark 5:16And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs.

Mark 5:17And they began to beg Jesus to departfrom their region.

John 3:19-20And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.

Mark 5:18As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged him that he might be with him.


Mark 5:19And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”


Mark 5:20And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.

1. There’s no such thing as “hopeless” when Jesus is in the situation!

Jesus is portrayed here in Mark 5 as the Sovereign Lord of the Universe, who exercises his absolute authority over the most powerful forces of evil!

3. Just as Jesus left behind the man he had freed to be a witness for him in a dark place, Jesus has also left us behind. Therefore, let’s all get intentional and “GO AND TELL!”
