Curation is a keyword that has emerged with Big data. Figure shows the rapid increased in frequency of searches for these two terms since 2011.

1. Definition of Curation

The word Curation cannot be found in the English dictionary

but in the French dictionary.

In the French dictionary, curation is defined as a treatment or a cure.

Wikipedia has four more definitions.

1. The work performed by a curator,

2. Archiving, historical record keeping,

3. Evidence management, indexing and cataloguing of evidence,

4. Cultural heritage management, conservation of cultural sites and resources.


2. Curation and curator in the digital era

Curation is often related to art galleries. What does it exactly mean?

Curation has come to be defined as ‘search’ in the digital age.

Today there is so much data, and the definition of curation has expanded to ‘search

intervened by people.’ Curation has become an important tool in the era of con-

tent oversupply by allowing user-friendly search rather than a mechanic search

simply done by the machine, and the need has risen for a new Curator or Curation

Service to play that role.

2. The Theoretical Background


The development of technology has made content production easier and more accessible, but ‘noise’ is increasing at the same time. Our email inboxes are filled with spam emails in this era of information explosion, we have too many friends on registered on Facebook, and our Twitter accounts are uncontrollable. It may have become easier to create contents, but it has become more difficult to find contents. It is imperative there is such service as curation that will classify such data amount.

In terms of Technology, Search and mining service is a creation from the effort of professionals trying to provide results by more precise filtering and analysis through solution wanted by the users. Such approach from the technological perspective challenged its limit by meeting social and ultimately created the word Social Curation.

The curation interface is the integrated expression of curation and interface; thereby, meaning the interface to help conducting curation.

Curation Interface So what? (1)

To solve the inconvenience of individual users in using SNS and

information confusion through curation interface is a new role of

interface planner, architecture, designer.

The purpose of this study is to arouse the fact that most related to Big Data

and curation have focused on the role of software engineers.

It aimed to propose the direction of curation to the tendency somewhat tilted

toward interaction and usability analysis for interface research.


Curation Interface So what? (2)

It is believed that further studies on usability analysis related to this will be

needed, and it is also believed that they will get good reviews if

3rd applications reflecting the research data get launched.

The case of TweetDeck is a good example to support this argument.

It is hoped that many people will be come a navigation of the digital era as

invigorating studies on curation interface and improving interface of Big Data

solutions and interface of the existing SNS as well as the third party applica-

tions of SNS.
