A story from Kayla Haysom Year 4 Rata 2
Same say there’s a sea creature called the Cracken. You may not believe me so here’s the story to it. Jellyfish lives in the deep blue sea. Jellyfish can live there because she has a bright glow-ing light leading the way, but all of a sudden swordfish came down. I’m going to get you jellyfish. Jellyfish went down and down. Swordfish couldn't go any further. Swordfish gave up his hunt for now. Just then totally un-expected there was a big dark shadow cover-ing the sea, it was Cracken, Cracken wrapped its tentacles around swordfish. I am going to eat you said Cracken, Help, help said swordfish. Standing there was jellyfish. Jellyfish zapped Cracken.
The Cracken
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Tena kotou katoa ….. warm greetings to you all
We are already mid-way through the first term! It has been a busy time and with the addi-
tion of the COVID 19 levels changing, we have found ourselves quickly needing to make
changes to ensure the safety of all personnel at these times.
Thank you to all of you who have updated your contact details and returned these to the
office. Last week’s tsunami warning is a timely reminder that we need these details
a.s.a.p. to ensure we are able to communicate with you immediately if / when an emer-
gency situation arises, or your child is unwell at school.
Swimming Sports 2021
Senior Swimming Sports are now on Tuesday 15th March. The events and the order of
events remain the same. These were reissued last week, so please contact the office if
you need this information resent. If you are able to assist us with timekeeping, please
email the office [email protected]
Reciprocal Conversations
We appreciated all of you who came last week. The staff thoroughly enjoyed your inter-
action and truly valued all the information that you shared. We will do our best to catch
up with those of you who were unable to make it, in the next couple of weeks.
Just in case we are getting complacent, here are some timely guidelines we need to re-
mind ourselves of at Alert Level 1
At Alert Level 1 the virus is contained in New Zealand but not overseas. We need to have
systems and practices in place in case COVID-19 reappears in our community.
There are no restrictions on personal movement at Alert Level 1 – all children and
staff should be at school.
The only people who will need to stay away are:
those required to self-isolate
individuals whom health authorities have asked to stay away while waiting for
a test result (most people will be able to go back to school/work while wait-
ing for a result)
children, students and staff who are unwell.
Testing remains a crucial component in preventing an outbreak
If a child or staff member is sick, they should stay home. If they have cold or flu symp-
toms they should call their doctor or Health line on 0800 358 5453 for advice about get-
ting tested. If recommended to get tested, they should do so.
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL (continued)
Schools will close for cleaning and contact tracing if there is a confirmed case who
was infectious when at school.
We continue to support contact tracing through the display of QR Code posters and
our visitor register, attendance register and timetable.
There are no restrictions on numbers at gatherings.
Schools, like workplaces are not considered to be gatherings. Physical activities includ-
ing cultural and sporting activities, practices and events can go ahead.
Fundamental public health measures continue to apply:
Physical distancing – keep a safe distance from people you don’t know while out and
about
Hand hygiene
Cough and sneeze etiquette
Regularly cleaning and disinfecting high touch surfaces.
Face coverings continue not to be required when in school.
This includes school transport and charter buses hired by the school to transport students
and staff to and from school. Anyone who chooses to wear a face-covering in any setting
should be supported to do so.
The Ministry of Education has also asked to share the following with you, re the vac-
cine roll out, scams and misinformation.
The vaccine plan can be found on the Ministry of Health website health.govt.nz/about-
ministry-health-websites…COVID 19 getting a vaccine.
Unfortunately, both misinformation and disinformation are being spread and CERT NZ is
working closely with other government agencies to try to stop these scams in their
tracks.
Key things everyone should know are:
The vaccine is free and at no point will you ever be asked to pay for securing your
place in the “queue”
Any communications about the vaccine will come from the Ministry of Health or oth-
er trusted sources
If you receive any emails out of the blue asking for financial and personal details, it is
likely to be a scam
The best way you can help stop these scams affecting New Zealanders is to report them
to CERT NZ.
Any questions or queries please feel free to contact us [email protected]

Ōhaupō is becoming a PB4L School
What does this mean? PB4L stands for Positive Behaviour for Learning and it is an initia-
tive that helps parents, whānau, teachers, early childhood centres, and schools address prob-
lem behaviour, improve children's well-being, and increase educational achievement.
By strengthening relationships and creating more positive home and school environments,
we remove barriers to engagement and improve students' chances to achieve at school and
beyond.
One of the first steps of our journey is for a member of the Ōhaupō community to join our
PB4L team. In this team we will review and monitor the initiatives that we are implement-
ing at school. For this plan to have the best chance of success, understanding what parents
are seeing and hearing will be vital. If you are interested in joining our team, please contact
Sheree Julian if you are interested at [email protected]
What will children and young people learn?
They will learn:
to work out when their safety is at risk
how to keep safe when they meet and mix with other people
who and how to ask for help if they, or someone they know, is being abused
to go on asking for help until someone does something to stop the abuse
that it is important to make and follow personal, family and school safety
rules.
They will know:
that abuse is never okay
that abuse is never their fault.
