President’s & Director’s Corners

Director’s Corner

While autumn at RIWS is full of exciting events, it is this time of year that we start looking forward to shaping our 2018 calendar.

We start by reviewing the previous year by asking:- how well did we do in our fundraisers?- how well were our events attended?- did our classes and workshops fill up?- what feedback did we receive from our members?

We also realize there are a lot of successful ideas and events that we don’t always hear about, but our members do.

Is there an artist you would like us to contact? Did you hear of a fun art event we could try? Do you have an idea for a open show theme? This is the time to be heard. Please email the gallery or any board member or stop by the gallery and let us know your ideas for 2018.

Thank you!

The opening reception for this year’s National Show exhibition is going to be taking place on Saturday October 14th from 2-4pm. This reflects a slight time change than we originally had on our schedule. We switched it so that it could be closer to Stan Miller’s demonstration. If you would like to attend Stan’s Demo and luncheon please sign up online as there are a limited number of spots available.

For this year’s National Show we received a total of 303 entires, which is over 100 more than last year! Submissions came in from all over the country. Each piece really does deserve recognition; the submitted work was astounding! That being said, our juror, artist Stan Miller, had to narrow the selections down to the 65 that will be featured in our gallery.

I can’t thank you all enough for your entires, we look forward to seeing more from all of you in the future. I, more than anyone, know that the online system was imperfect and we thank you for your patience as we refine this submission process to maximize its convenience for our members. In looking toward the future, we’ve got 1 more open juried show this year, our fall classes are up online, calendar voting is currently underway, and the Art in Autumn Fundraiser is going on until October 13th!

We could not be more pleased with the results of our Art in Autumn fundraising exhibition, currently hanging in our gallery.

RIWS members were asked to donate two 5”x7” orginal 2D media works for display in our gallery and for purchase at $40 each. We were amazed at what our artists produced with the small scale they were given to work with. Several different media were used to paint a variety of subjects, ranging from animals to flowers, and oceans to portraits. Gallery Director Sam Green did a great job hanging the pieces in a format that showcases their beauty, giving them the appearance of colorful gems lining our walls.

Our opening reception saw a record amount of visitors to the gallery where we were treated to a demo by the living legend, watercolor artist Al Albrekston. A special thanks goes to Al, our members, and to Paula Correia for her cheery and seasonal decor.

We remind everyone that all proceeds of RIWS sales go towards keeping RIWS open to the public and maintaining a space where artists can gather to create and share their work. We invite all to visit us and experience it first-hand.

RIWS was happy to welcome Girl Scouts Troop #655 to our gallery for a fun morning of art education and painting as part of their badge-earning program. The girls were tasked with painting pieces using the media of their choice to depict whatever subject matter they chose. Afterwards, they were awarded with their Girl Scouts Art Badges.

As more schools threaten to take away art education, we are pleased to see that organizations like the Girl Scouts of America continue to include art in their programming.

The girls’ pieces will be hanging in our gallery alongside the National Show exhibition.
