PEGASO project – FP7 ENV.2009-1

PEGASO : European project aiming at building on existing capacities to develop common novel approaches and practices for sustainable development and environmental protection of coastal zones in the Mediterranean and Black Seas

ICZM CASE Bouches du RhôneMain drivers (EEA DPSIR framework)

Conserve (semi-)natural ecosystems, marine habitats, wetlands, water quality. Considered as important for population well being

Development of tourism and recreational activities

Preserve traditional professional fishing activities

Urban, peri urban and industrial development

1962 -> 1999 BdR population +47% (2 times France pop. increase rate)

Marseille urban community management plan (SCOT): + 80000 to 100000 inhabitants (+5%) expected in 2030

Harbor extension

7

Focus on the interactions between the 4 distinct entities

Consider relationship between coastal environment quality and socio-economic activities

1st step : territorial diagnosis (requires discussions with stake-holders)

Question:

Assess the impacts of current trends and management choices on the marine and coastal uses

Method :

Consider a baseline scenario and several variants of this trend scenario

Distinguish trends independent from local decisions (national policies, industrial strategies...) and trends resulting from local decisions

Characterize the elements of the baseline scenario by quantitative indicators

CASE Bouches du RhôneIndicators

Sea side limits based on WFD water masses

Land side, territorial unit limits base on administrative communes

• Select a – reduced - set of indicators applicable at local scale regarding :

- ecosystem status - pressures - economic data

• Historical analysis

• Consider :

- Agriculture - Urban areas - Industry - Natural protected

areas - Harbours - Tourism/recreative

activities - Aquaculture and

fishing
