It is my hope that you will plan on coming to these special events and consider bringing your friends and family to see our beautiful church and hear the inspiring music within its walls. Highlights of the season include two concerts that feature our Ruffatti organ, our friends Nielson & Young return for another duo-piano concert and local favorites, Doug Renfroe and Jodie DeSalvo close out the series. Also featured will be two special musical services led by our wonderful Chancel Choir. The first is a service of Readings and Carols celebrating the story and music of Christmas and the second is a service of Music and Meditations on Good Friday.

You will find an envelope to return with your support for A Season of Music at First Presbyterian Church. It is only through the generosity of people who love and support music that our church is able to provide such fine music that benefits both our church and the greater Naples community. A Service of Lessons and Carols with the Chancel Choir Sunday, December 9, 2012 4:00 p.m. The service of Lessons and Carols follows the traditional pattern of prayers, lessons and music made popular by King’s College in Cambridge, England. Once again we enter into the well-known story of Christmas and are invited to hear the song of the angels, share in the wonder of the shepherds and resolve to be as persistent as the magi. Experience the hope and joy of rediscovering the miracle and wonder of Christmas as told through beautiful readings and cherished music of the season. Sing some of your favorite traditional carols such as O Come All Ye Faithful, Hark The Herald Angels Sing, Silent Night, and many others. Our Chancel Choir will offer such favorites as John Rutter’s Shepherd’s Pipe Carol and Christmas Lullaby, Harold Darke’s beautiful setting of In the Bleak Midwinter as well as Natalie Sleeth’s lovely Baby, What You Goin’ to Be?

Come and remember the reason for the season! Mark your calendar now for this yuletide afternoon.

An Afternoon of Song James Cochran, Michele Byrd and Brice Gerlach Sunday, November 11, 2012 4:00 p.m.

The concert season opens with a bang! Our Director of Music, Brice Gerlach and his wife, Michele Byrd, combine talents with James Cochran, Director of Music at Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church for an exciting afternoon of keyboard and vocal music. In addition to the magnificent Ruffatti pipe organ, Brice and Jim will be playing a Rodgers digital organ as well as a new Blüthner grand piano. The variety of sounds this combination of instruments can produce is amazing. It will be like an orchestra concert with only two keyboard players. The program will include baroque gems, opera classics, hymn arrangements, and some Broadway! You won’t want to miss this special concert!

Lenten Noontime Organ Recitals Wednesdays, March 13, March 20, March 27, 2013 12:00 - 12:30 p.m.

The spectacular Ruffatti pipe organ is featured in three Lenten organ recitals offered by our Director of Music, Brice Gerlach. In

these informal concerts Brice takes the time to explain some of the mechanical workings of the organ and offers some musical insights about the pieces on the program. Each concert opens with a piece that highlights the magnificent horizontal trumpets protruding from the front of the organ case. A work by J. S. Bach is always featured, and arrangements of Lenten hymn tunes are presented, allowing for some of the diverse solo stops and softer sounds of the organ to be heard. The concerts will end with a rousing toccata, allowing the audience to hear the full power of the organ. After the recital, the audience is invited up to the console to ask questions and to see the beautiful woodwork and craftsmanship of the Ruffatti. Tours of the pipe chambers are also offered each week. Come hear the beautiful organ music during Lent. Don't miss these special opportunities for personal reflection, meditation, and celebration of this holy season.

Good Friday Music and Meditations Friday, March 29, 2013 7:00 p.m.

The Church gathers on Good Friday to commemorate the crucifixion, death, and entombment of Jesus. From ancient times, this day has been a time of fasting and prayer. Coupled with Easter, Good Friday is the oldest observance in the Christian calendar. Good Friday is felt as a day of sorrow. It is a time to grieve over the sin of man and to meditate upon the love that God has so generously bestowed upon humanity in giving His only Son for the redemption of sinners. The music for this meaningful service will be selections from some of the greatest sacred choral masterworks. Included in the service will be such selections as the Introit and Kyrie from the Requiem by John Rutter, The Processional to Calvary and The Appeal of the Crucified from The Crucifixion by John Stainer and Crucifixus from the B Minor Mass by J. S. Bach. Experience the meaning of Christ’s passion before the joy of Easter.
