I have never lived in a time like this and that is probably true for you as well.

Although, we have some cases of COVID-19, so far, we have been spared the disastrous results that we have heard about from some providers.

That has not happened by accident.

We have an incredible group of individuals who, even when facing their own fears about COVID-19, have shown up to work every day to provide the services our residents need.

May is the month that we honor nurses with their own week. I’d like to extend that to include all of our team members who work in our healthcare communities. They are tasked with taking care of our most vulnerable population 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year during “normal” times and they have risen to the challenges presented by COVID-19.

Staff in all of our 197 communities are working hard throughout the “Stay at Home” mandates to ensure that our residents have what they need to minimize their exposure in their community. We are grateful to the hundreds of agencies and organizations that have provided our residents with food, cleaning supplies and various forms of entertainment (we’ve had a lot of parking lot musicians entertain residents while practicing social distancing.)

Our national headquarters staff have found a way to keep the whole organization running while the majority of them are working remotely from home.

I have never been more proud of the men and women who work for Retirement Housing Foundation.Which brings me to another topic – I will be retiring as President and CEO of RHF in March of 2021. In the more than 34 years I have held that position, I have seen this organization grow from 60 communities in 13 states to 197 communities in 29 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands (and there will be more before my time is up!)

It is a wonderful mission and it has been my honor to serve you, our residents, for so long.

While I might not know who will replace me yet, I do know that the mission and the organization is strong and will continue to grow for many years to come.

From The President

RHF Responds to the COVID CrisisIt is hard to know how history will portray 2020, but COVID-19 will be the dominating topic. Decisions made and actions taken at all levels of government, business and society will be debated for decades to come. RHF, like every other organization, has had to react to a situation that few could have planned for and everyone hoped they would never face.

Ignoring the situation was never an option and two things were determined from the very beginning – we would attempt to do the right thing and we could get through it, if we worked together.

Stay at Home MandatesRHF’s National Headquarters is located in Long Beach, California. California was one of the first states to react to the COVID crisis with a “Stay at Home” mandate.

Realizing that a significant number of the residents we served were considered the most vulnerable to this virus, a decision was made to roll out these mandates to all the communities RHF manages throughout the country.

At the beginning, those mandates were not universally accepted by many in states who were not initially impacted by COVID, but top leadership at RHF felt those decisions helped to minimize the impact COVID has had our residents so far. While there have been cases of COVID in our nursing homes and affordable communities, our numbers do not reflect what other senior communities have suffered.

Staffing Adjustments NationwideNationwide, RHF employs more than 2,800 team members. Within a week of California’s Stay at Home mandate, decisions were made as to who was needed to work on-site at the communities, who could work from home at the national headquarters and regional offices, and who would need to be temporarily furloughed at the national headquarters and out in RHF’s 197 communities.

On March 24, 2020 the RHF Board of Directors authorized a gift of $150,000 from RHF to RHF Charitable Foundation to establish a Staff Assistance For Emergency (SAFE) Furlough Fund to provide temporary financial assistance to staff currently employed by RHF, whether it’s an RHF-sponsored or managed community, or the corporate office in Long Beach.

The SAFE Fund is intended to help bridge the difference between a furloughed employees’ regular pay and the amount received from unemployment insurance. Eligibility is limited to RHF employees that are temporarily furloughed, who have exhausted their sick / vacation time, and applied for unemployment insurance.

Applications can be obtained from the RHF Philanthropy Department. All employees who qualify will receive assistance from RHF Charitable Foundation every two weeks, until the SAFE Fund is depleted or three pay periods, whichever comes first.

Project H.A.N.D.S. Retools RHF is so proud of its Project H.A.N.D.S. volunteers. These groups, throughout the country, have been responding to the needs in their communities for more than a decade. The COVID crisis has brought the very best out of this group of volunteers. Thousands of masks have been made and distributed to local agencies, hospitals and to fellow RHF residents in communities throughout the country. Hygiene Kits

RHF Responds to the COVID Crisis

Southpointe Villa - Rialto, CA

Thanks to Southpointe Villa's Service Coordinator Candy Kistemann, the City of Rialto, and a local non-profit organization called Sahaba Initiative, the residents of Southpointe Villa have received donations of groceries, hygiene kits and other essentials.

Charles Major Manor - Shelbyville, IN

We are very thankful to Shelby Senior Services, Inc. for their recent delivery of a month’s worth of groceries for the residents of Charles Major Manor. Shelby Senior Services, Inc. is an organization that is committed to helping seniors remain active and healthy, and to live with dignity and a quality of life that they deserve.

Verde View - Camp Verde, AZ

The residents of Verde View got a wonderful surprise in early April when Camp Verde Marshal's Office volunteers dropped off several large boxes of fresh produce and other food items.

Courtenay Springs Village - Merritt Island, FL

The residents of Courtenay Springs Village were encouraged to send out their positive message to the world by writing their personal “something good” on a whiteboard. These messages of hope were then posted on our social media pages for family and friends to see and share.

A Daily PrayerAs a faith-based nonprofit, RHF felt compelled to offer residents who were somewhat cut off from their faith communities an opportunity to pray, as one body of people, on a daily basis. The Daily Prayer project was created. Dr. Joseph, four Board members (three ordained clergy and a layperson), and a number of staff members have contributed their efforts in providing a daily prayer that is distributed to residents and staff who have indicated they would like to participate. It is estimated that more than 20,000 view these prayers daily. You can access them on RHF’s website, www.rhf.org.

We'll Get By With a Little Help From Our FriendsIn early April, RHF Charitable Foundation received a donation from California Bank & Trust (CB&T) to help purchase 4,000 kits filled with personal hygiene products, including soap, shampoo, toothpaste and other items. These kits along with 1,000 Tide Pod laundry detergents donated from WASH Laundry, were distributed to RHF's senior affordable communities across the country.

To date, more than 60 RHF senior communities have received these care packages.

Since then, RHF Charitable Foundation has received additional support from our friends at SullivanCurtisMonroe, Clifton Larson Allen and All Valley Washer Service to provide another 3,000 kits containing hygiene products and laundry detergent. We hope to assist another 50 affordable communities with these donations.

Below, you can read about various acts of kindness in our communities throughout the country.

RHF’s 2020 Rex Chapman AwardRaymond EastMember and Former Chair – RHF National Board of Directors

The RHF Board established the Rex Chapman Award in honor of Rex, who served on the Board of Retirement Housing Foundation from 1977 to 1998, and chaired the Board from 1984 to 1989.The award is not given every year, but when it is given it is to someone who has provided outstanding leadership to the mission of RHF, who oversaw the growth of RHF, and who has had a lifetime and/or singular effect on the success of the mission.

Ray East has served on the RHF National Board of Directors for 24 years and six (6) of those years as its Chair. He lives in Charlottesville, Virginia with his wife, Caroline.Providing a safe, affordable and nurturing place to live for those in need is of utmost importance to him. This is the main reason he feels so deeply about RHF’s mission. Ray thoroughly enjoys meeting the RHF residents in their communities and listening to their life stories. He particularly enjoys photographing their beautiful faces in portraits that he can share with them and their families. Ray also cherishes the friendships he has formed over the past 24 years with both staff, administrators, and Board Members. Working together with a team that supports affordable housing has greatly enriched his life. After he retired as Senior Graphics Engineer for WRC-TV, the NBC affiliate in Washington, D.C., Ray turned his love for photography into his second career. Although Ray’s contributions while serving on the Board have been numerous, it is his talents in the area of photography that has left a lasting mark on the organization. Many of RHF’s publications feature his photography.

On January 25 and 26, Ginger and I were in Honolulu for the memorial for Kiku Kawata who passed away at age 90. Her husband Teri had previously served on the RHF Board for 15 years and Kiku on the RHF Advisory Commission during that same time. I knew them when Teri was the Conference Minister of the Hawaii Conference of the United Church of Christ. He had also served as Interim Conference Minister of the Southern California Conference. It was while we were preparing to return to California that we heard about the helicopter crash which killed 9 persons including Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna. As a Lakers season ticket holder I had known Kobe for over 20 years from just before the Staples Center in Los Angeles opened on October 17, 1999.On our flight to Los Angeles, I noticed that our flight attendant seemed to be less talkative and cheerful than attendants usually are and I overheard someone say it’s too bad about your niece. Turned out her niece was Christina Mauser who was the Assistant Coach on the team on which Kobe’s daughter played. During a break, I got up and talked with her about what had happened, I told her I was clergy in the United Church of Christ and expressed my sympathy. We talked for quite a while. At the end of the flight as we were exiting the plane she hugged me and thanked me for talking with her.

That experience reminded me that no matter whom you are or where you are on life’s journey there are opportunities to make a difference in someone’s life. Apparently, it made a difference to her and she made a difference to me.

Whether you are a Board Member, Team Member, Financial Supporter, Visitor, Volunteer, Family Member or Resident there are always opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others. Whether you are acknowledged at the time or not, be assured that you are making a difference.

Thank you for what you do, and know that as you give you also receive!

Back in 1859, Charles Dickens wrote in a Tale of Two Cities, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...”, and that is certainly our day.

Keep the faith and pray for one another and for our nation.

We will get through this together.

59th Anniversary Celebration

RHF’s 2020 Executive Director of the YearSandy HaskinsGold Country Retirement Center – Placerville, CA

Sandy began working with seniors more than 30 years ago, throughout the state of California, with five (5) of those years as Executive Director of Gold Country Retirement and Healthcare Center.

Her leadership at Gold Country has resulted in a positive cash flow and high occupancy levels in four out of five years at her community. She oversees a staff that has consistently rated well on surveys conducted by various state agencies. She finds inspiration from her staff whom she feels works very hard to make their residents’ lives better. At the state level, she is very active in LeadingAge California and was named their

2015 Grassroots Advocate awardee.

Gold Country is an integral part of the Placerville community in which it is located – you can’t go anywhere around town without meeting someone who has had a family member living or working at Gold Country.

Sandy is most proud of the fact that RHF /Gold Country Retirement and Healthcare Center is providing a beautiful and contemporary senior housing option that appeals to the middle-income residents in El Dorado County.

RHF: Committed to Building Brighter Tomorrows2020 marks RHF’s 59th Anniversary. Management staff from all of our multi-level retirement communities and our affordable communities in five western states met in Long Beach for a week of meetings and educational sessions. Several United Church of Christ (UCC) Conference Ministers and representatives joined some of those meetings, the worship service, and the annual dinner to familiarize themselves with RHF, what we do, and the mission that we are committed to.

At our annual dinner, RHF also recognizes some outstanding individuals who make a difference in the lives of our residents and impact our organization throughout the year. Read about the honorees below and on the following pages.

RHF’s 2020 Resident of the Year Marvin HessePilgrim Place – Mason City, IA

North Iowa has always been home to Marvin Hesse. When Marvin moved into Pilgrim Place, a little over 5 years ago he immediately started looking for things to do to keep occupied.

Around the community, Marvin is always there to set up tables for events, decorating for holidays or just doing anything he sees that needs to be done. If the Service Coordinator, Maintenance staff or Manager needs help with something, Marvin is there. For residents, Marvin helps them move furniture, fix things, give rides, and is a good friend to them. Marvin visits former residents once they have left to ensure that they are doing well.

He has totally re-landscaped the grounds around Pilgrim Place. Along with that, he brought in his swing, a fountain, and outside decorations to the community for everyone to enjoy. He has moved rock and mulch like he was actually enjoying it, maybe he actually was. It is not unusual to see Marvin cleaning off all the tenant’s cars after snow or ice storms, blowing leaves, planting flowers or watering plants, trimming bushes, tending to the vegetable gardens, or painting.

Dawn is an extremely intelligent, caring, compassionate, and professional woman who is very energetic and passionate about her job, her building, her residents, those in the community, and the Mission of RHF.

When Dawn started, she implemented a Resident Appreciation Event in order to improve resident – management relations. It was so successful that it has become a quarterly get-together. The residents look forward to these gatherings where they are encouraged to visit with each other and members of the staff and just enjoy one another’s company.

She successfully guided her team and residents through an extensive refinance rehab and then just a short time after that work was finally completed, endured the unexpected occurrence of a fire that took place on Christmas Day. She responded promptly, worked professionally to calm all of the residents, directed emergency responders, worked with displaced residents, and then worked for months with the rehab team and insurance adjusters to correct all of the damage. She kept in touch with her displaced residents to help alleviate their fears and stress of being away from their homes and worked hard to get them all back quickly to the community.

Dawn is also a lead manager within RHF due to her knowledge, accuracy of work, cooperation, reliability, organization, and overall outstanding performance. This past year, in addition to managing Longfellow, she served as interim manager at LaFontaine Center and The Towers at Southdale when those properties were without a manager. She is a strong leader who strives to do her best in all situations

RHF’s 2020 Manager of the YearDawn LewisLongfellow Plaza – Anderson, IN

Karleen is caring, compassionate and a strong advocate for the residents at Redding Pilgrim House. Karleen works diligently to meet the needs of each resident.

Karleen works well with area service agencies to bring many services to the property like Government Surplus Commodities and Brown Bag. Each month Karleen invites guest speakers to the property for wellness education programs and believes that health is the most valuable asset a resident has.

During the devastating CARR Fire in their town, Karleen came and sat with the residents to help them stay calm and understand what was happening in their town. She was prepared in case our residents needed to evacuate.

“One of the best blessings of living at Redding Pilgrim House,” Redding Pilgrim House resident, Billie May Key says, “is the ever-loving presence of our Social Service Coordinator, Karleen Davis.”

Great Things Are Happening

Last December, residents of RHF’s Essex Village and Kings Grant celebrated the holidays together with a combined holiday party. The

fun-filled celebration included a “gingerbread” house making session where residents got creative with candy and frosting.

Though both are communities for older adults, Essex Village and King’s Grant do have some child residents; these residents got surprise gifts to open thanks to the generous donors who contribute to RHF’s "Toys for RHF Kids" program.

Lindsay Place First RespondersLindsay Place, Lindsay, OK

Lindsay Place hosts a pancake breakfast every month as a way of thanking their local first responders. This was started by Jim Morehead, a former resident of Lindsay Place and a retired EMSC (Emergency Medical Service Coordinator). Jim Morehead began his career in the Emergency Medical Service field after he was discharged from the Navy, where he was a medic. Knowing first-hand of the hard work and sacrifice of being a first responder, Jim knew it was incredibly important to honor the emergency responders as they do so much for the residents of Lindsay Place. Jim passed away in May of 2019, but his tradition lives on.

Valentine's Day at Towne Creek Apartments included a flurry of activities for the residents to enjoy. Toni Andrukaitis, a regular volunteer at Towne Creek Apartments came for a visit and taught an art class. The residents then presented Toni with a certificate as a way of thanking her for her contrubutions to the community.

The residents also got a visit from members of a local Girl Scout troop who took part in the art projects and brought along some of their famous cookies to share with everyone!

The residents of RHF’s Monona Meadows Donation are very grateful for the generosity of a local organization called Community Action Coalition for South Central Wisconsin. This organization provides our residents with many services, including weekly meals and monthly food boxes.

To show their appreciation, the Monona Meadows residents collected clothing and other items to be donated to the organization to help them provide for the less fortunate residents of the local community. Pictured here are our residents with some, but not all, of their gathered donations in January of the year.

Community Action Coalition For South Central Wisconsin, Inc. serves Dane, Jefferson and Waukesha Counties by distributing food and clothing to thousands of low-income residents, providing services for the homeless and those at risk of homelessness, supporting 26 food pantry gardens that grow food for those in need, and much more.

Honoring Some Incredible Individuals“A pessimist, they say, sees a glass of water as being half empty; an optimist sees the same glass as half full. But a giving person sees a glass of water and starts looking for someone who might be thirsty.” - G. Thomas Gale

April has been designated as National Volunteer Month. RHF and our communities are blessed to have thousands of people believe in its mission and volunteer at our communities. These three individuals were honored at our annual dinner in February for their volunteer efforts in two of those communities.

RHF’s 2020 Volunteer of the Year Billy HunterMarymount Manor – Tacoma, WA

Billy Hunter from BASH (Bikers Against Statewide Hunger) has been delivering much-needed groceries to the residents of Marymount Manor for nearly 10 years.

These groceries come at the end of the month, which is a time when residents find they are very low on funds and would otherwise have to choose between buying food and paying for medicine. This food delivery is full of fresh fruits and vegetables, and staples like milk and bread.

The food is set up in the community room and residents are allowed to “shop” for what they want.

In addition to delivering groceries, Billy and other BASH volunteers provide annual Easter and Christmas parties for the residents of Marymount Manor that include gifts, Easter baskets, and plenty of treats and fun! The residents really look forward to these parties and the opportunity to mingle with the BASH bikers (including getting a motorcycle ride!)

RHF’s 2020 Local Board Member of the Year Paula MargesonCarbon Creek Shores – Anaheim, CA

The idea for Carbon Creek Shores originated with a Housing Task Force for the 1981 International Year of the Disabled Person. Paula Margeson of the Dayle Mcintosh Center, acted as a catalyst in continuing the 6-year effort, recruiting a Technical Advisory Board of volunteers and contributing both in-kind resources and leadership in the project’s development. In 1983, RHF joined in the venture. Carbon Creek Shores became Orange County, California’s first accessible, affordable apartment complex for persons with disabilities.

Whether it is Game Night on the second Saturday of every month where she and her husband bring games to play, snacks to eat or prizes to win; MC’ing RHF’s 55th Anniversary celebration and other events at the community; helping to create Independent Living Skills classes for residents to participate in; or donating a TV for the lobby, Paula shares her enthusiasm for life with all the residents at Carbon Creek Shores.

Paula is the Executive Director of the Dayle Mcintosh Center, an Orange County nonprofit organization that supports the efforts of people with disabilities to live independently. She has worked in the Disability Rights movement for more than thirty years and is committed to the principle of equity for all people. Ms. Margeson spearheaded the development of two accessible/affordable apartment complexes in Orange County, as well as, the establishment of the area’s first homeless shelter designed specifically for people with disabilities. She has served on numerous advisory committees and state councils representing the interests of the disability constituency. Ms. Margeson was part of a group of 60 leaders in the field of disability, who reviewed and provided input on the drafting of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

She has since retired and moved to Texas but she is still active on the Board.

RHF Charitable Foundation Approved As a Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) Member

In the summer of 2019, Philanthropy was again notified that our CFC application was approved. This makes it easier for federal employees to make a donation to us via payroll deduction and/or check. We received assistance from Health and Human Services Charities of America, a non-profit organization and a federation that reviews applications and distributes donated funds. There are currently more than 30 federations within the CFC, most of them organized around a specific theme. Approximately 1,900 national organizations and 40,000 local organizations qualify for the CFC annually.

In 1961 three men got together because they had a vision, providing affordable senior housing to America's growing senior population. The Rev. Reinhold Klein was one of those men and that vision became Retirement Housing Foundation.

He became the first Executive Director of Retirement Housing Foundation.

Working out of his home and with his wife, Lydia, as his unpaid secretary, they worked to lay the foundation for an organization whose focus would be building quality, affordable housing for retired older adults.

Rev. Klein’s first task was getting the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the FHA to have the confidence in RHF to take over the development of a bankrupted community in Antelope Valley, California. He and Rev. Clark Harshfield convinced them, and Mayflower Gardens became RHF’s first community.

60 years later his vision has grown to be 197 communities in 29 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U. S. Virgin Islands.

In 2016 it was decided to rename a community in honor of the Klein’s contribution to RHF’s mission. Laurel Park Manor was selected to be renamed Klein Manor because Reiny and Lydia were 55 year residents of the Los Alamitos/Rossmoor area and longtime members of the Community Congregational UCC, the church which Laurel Park Manor is adjacent to.

Rev. Klein passed away on March 11, 2020. He leaves a legacy that generations will benefit from.
