About GreenBlue Urban

We help create sustainable cities through urban tree planting, green infrastructure, and sustainable stormwater management.

GreenBlue Urban was setup in North America to research and provide solutions for assisting trees in their battle to establish in urban spaces. With the goal of drastically improving urban planting success and increasing leaf canopy in urban areas, GreenBlue tirelessly analyzed the challenges, causes of failure, and the reasons for premature mortality in urban trees. We then examined the impact that poor planting has on urban infrastructures. Having identified the key issues in both of these areas, we systematically researched the solutions for those issues and designed practical products and systems to address them.

Our program of continuous product development, conducted in conjunction with overseas partners, and our world-class manufacturing processes, ensures specifiers and clients that the systems we offer for urban planting schemes represent the very best in the sector.

ArborSystem®

The GreenBlue ArborSystem brings together the key elements of successful tree pit layout and simplifies the design and installation process for specifiers and installers.

Since its inception and develop-ment, the ArborSystem integrated tree pit product package has proved itself in many demanding loca-tions. For many landscape specifiers, the ArborSystem has become the system of choice for integrating trees into the urban environment. Indeed, the ArborSystem is the most advanced and comprehensive complete tree plant-ing system available on the market.

ArborSystem® Soil Cells

The provision of a suitable growing medium for tree roots in urban areas is vital to the trees long term success. Balancing the engineering requirements of roads and parking lots with the trees needs can be diffi-cult. GreenBlue’s range of high strength structural support modules are the solution.

Environmentally critical design parameters have resulted in an extremely strong module made from 100% recycled material, which leaves over 94% of its total volume for root growth and storm water harvesting. These structural modules are connected rapidly and simply, with minimum skilled labor required, leaving large spaces between columns to provide generous avenues for healthy root growth and/or stormwater storage.

StrataVault®

The StrataVault has very generous apertures for root growth, without sacrificing the structural integrity of the matrix. StrataVault apertures are also large enough to permit common conduits, service pipes, and irrigation/aeration systems to be incorporated within the structure. The functionality of the StrataVault systems allows for installation as independent modules or as a connected matrix.


ArborSystem® Soil Cells

StrataCell®

The StrataCell is an ultra high-strenght large soil cell module with more space for extensive root growth in large-canopy trees. Developed in 2007, StrataCell represents the fifth-generation of GreenBlue root cell development and is manufactured globally at locations in North America, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

RootCell®

RootCells were developed in 2001 as a load-bearing structural system composed of pipe modules filled with quality soil for use in parking lots and sidewalks. As the strongest available soil cell system on the market, RootCells allow trees in urban settings to have large, healthy root systems, thriving in quality, uncompacted soil.

GrassRings® | GravelRings®

GrassRings / GravelRings were the world’s first load-bear-ing soil modules. Developed in 1992, this system was used as the model for future soil cells. They are used as a structural grid system to stabilize and reinforce grass and gravel.

Root Management

ReRoot™ - Linear Ribbed Root Barrier

ReRoot comes in a number of different widths and is supplied in easy to handle 100ft (30m) rolls. The purpose of ReRoot is to direct roots down and away from the surface. Using this product prevents the establishment of shallow roots beneath paving, which could disrupt the paved surface in later years. ReRoot also encourages roots to a deeper more moist soil profile to support drought tolerance.

RootStop™ - Linear Smooth Root Barrier

Flat sheet root barrier for protecting underground utilities and foundations from tree root growth. An excellent way of helping trees to establish roots in preferred zones. Strong and flexible, RootStop is used widely around the world and comes in many different roll widths.

GreenBlue offers three types of product for the effective management of tree root systems. ReRoot ribbed root barriers are a flexible way of redirecting roots to slightly lower ground profiles to prevent root heave problems and encourage the establishment of a more drought tolerant root system. The RootDirector product offers a simple, one piece surround root barrier for individual trees in continuous paving. RootStop smooth root barriers are for creating root-free zones for utilities and buildings.

RootDirector™ - Modular Ribbed Root Directors

Preformed tree root management, ideal for stand-alone trees in car parks and paved areas. Robustly constructed from recycled plastic, this product comes in a number of different sizes to suit various tree species and situations. Effective and easy to install, RootDirectors offer an excellent solution to surface paving heave and encourage drought tolerance.

RootRain™ Irrigation & Aeration

RootRain UrbanFor larger trees and root balls, the RootRain Urban provides a 2.5” (65mm) continuous circuit with a 4” (100mm) large capacity inlet. A fixed trimmer resistant grid inlet keeps bulky debris out and prevents rodents entering. The RootRain Urban system is easy to fit when planting and very effective in assisting the fast watering of trees.

RootRain CivicFor larger rootball trees, the RootRain Civic provides a 2.5” (65mm) continuous circuit with a 4” (100mm) large capacity inlet. It is designed for fast installation and has a fixed trimmer resistant grid inlet and the additional heavy duty ventilated metal cap keeps, not only large debris and rodents out, but also smaller debris and gravel.

RootRain PrecinctFor integration with the specialist tree grilles in paved surfaces – the RootRain Precinct provides a permanent access point, and delivers essential water and oxygen around the root ball. The heavy duty cast inlet has a lift and swing lid to allow for cleaning and inspection.

RootRain ArborVentThe RootRain ArborVent provides a permanent access point for irrigation/aeration in hardscape surfaces. The system links to a 65mm tee and pipe circuit to allow watering to roots beneath paved surfaces and allow important air exchange in the root zone. The heavy duty cast inlet has a lift and swing lid to allow for cleaning and inspection.

RootRain Linear DrainFor a consolidated irrigation and aeration solution coupled with stormwater management, RootRain Linear Drain provides a permanent solution for installing in hardscape surfaces. The system can link to any underground system to allow for stormwater management of any desire, including tree irrigation.

RootRain MetroThe RootRain Metro is designed as a cost-effective residential tree irrigation and aeration system, and is also available in a simple instal-lation pack form for self-assembly.

Root Ball GuyingComplementing the tree planting range of products is the discreet and effective underground guying system, ArborGuy™. The ArborGuy tree guying sys-tem has many advantages over traditional staking and is suitable for large root-balled trees. Discreet and effective, this underground guying system holds the root ball in position by driving three tree guying anchors into the base of the tree pit and then fastening a ratchet strap. These ‘drive-in’ anchor systems allow natural trunk movement for the tree, helping the formation of a strong trunk structure.

Stormwater Management

ArborFlow™ GreenBlue’s sustainable urban drainage system – ArborFlow – has been developed as an effective and environmentally robust means of managing surface water run-off. Ideal for use in urban areas where space is at a premium, ArborFlow markedly reduces the velocity and flow rate of surface water run-off in urban areas. When designed for a given catchment area it can contribute to-wards meeting the discharge rates allowed and set by regulatory authorities.

CurbFlow™Heavy duty steel inlet, available in both corten and galvanized steel, the CurbFlow inlet gives a simple and durable means of conveying rain water run-off into the catchment zone for attenuation. The inlet is closable with a simple tool, to prevent the risk of over saturation to the tree pit caused by prolonged winter or rain events. This may also be needed in areas liable to occasional pollutant or heavy de-icing salt intakes.

The original support bracket – proved for over 20 years – for use on medium to large sized schemes. A timeless classic combining ease of installation and assuring stability. Tree Pit Packages

Multiple aligned tree pits can be linked below ground to form structurally load-bearing tree pits with adequate uncompacted soil volumes in difficult areas, effective-ly creating a shared rooting space.
